Reds Trivia 5/1/08

July 31, 1934: Ernie Lombardi’s grand slam in the 6th inning off Ralph Birkofer gives the Reds a 5-4 lead, but the Pirates come out ahead in the end in a 7-5, 10 inning decision in the second game of a double header at Crosley Filed. The Reds won the first game, 6-4.

Birkhofer grew up in the Cincinnati neighborhood of Camp Washington. After his playing career ended, Birkhofer was actively involved in Cincinnati knothole baseball. Two of his sons played minor league ball.

All “Reds trivia” posts come from Greg Rhodes and John Snyder’s fabulous book, “Redleg Journal” (see link for purchasing) and are used with Greg’s permission.
