Welcome to day one of the Walt Jocketty era.
This has been an all-around bizarre week. The Reds just finished up a two-game series with LA, and now we commence yet another two-gamer with Houston. Nutty scheduling.
Anyway, Bronson Arroyo is on the mound tonight. I’m very hopeful that he can turn his season around.
For what it’s worth, I’m back from my Disney World vacation, where I was pretty successful in ignoring the Reds, who have been a bit frustrating for the last week (well, for the last decade, I suppose). Let’s hope that’s about to change.
Discuss it here….

Were they drunk when they made up the schedule this year?
Let’s hope Ross is the answer to Arroyo’s woes.
Idea for Astros promotion – Guess Tejada’s Age Night.
Who makes room for Ross?
Hopper.
Jared, you didn’t know of Hopper’s injury? It is so severe he had to go on the 15-day DL. He’s so tough that he didn’t even know he was hurt until today.
Is Jerry Hairston related to Happy Hairston?
5 for 7 for Hairston.
So will it be a lovefest in San Fran for Dusty this weekend?
Hairston part of a double play in the first inning for the second straight night. Eerie!
Talk about a no-doubter!
Griffey!!!!
Must have been that modest sinking fastball.
Does Thom Brennaman think he always do play-by-play for a video game? He is so overly dramatic! “Still in the pursuit of history.”
“Were they drunk when they made up the schedule this year?”
Possibly, but each league seems to have one week every year where teams play two two-game series. The AL did it last week, the NL is doing it this week.
It’s not that unusual. It’s a product of the goofy unbalanced schedule.
That might be the case, renbutler, but I never remember two back to back two-game series like this one. I remember an odd two-gamer occasionally, but nothing like this.
My memory is NOT good, though, I admit.
hal and marty ‘tellin like it is’ about arroyo. he’s a 4th or 5th starter.
Something has to give with respect to Arroyo. I’m worried about him.
Me too, Jimmy.
Well, Arroyo escaped there without too much damage. Could have been much worse than it was.
The Cowboy says Arroyo’s problem is pitch selection. He needs to throw more fastballs to set up the other pitches.
Does Dunn play golf?
I think Arroyo just had a good year in 05. He won’t be the #2 next year.
The Cowboy also said that Encarnacion is not a clutch player. The Cowboy is an idiot.
Cowboy might be better suited to express opinions on pitching than hitting.
Arroyo might not be here next year unless he starts producing.
Welcome back, David Ross!
Ross does have power when he makes contact.
Do we have to watch Jocketty while he talks? Can we please watch the game?
Jocketty talking about a strategic plan. How about planning on getting Jay Bruce up here!
FSOH must have heard you, Brian.
re: Arroyo
As always, Cowboy, Marty and Thom are blowing four at bats way out of proportion. Nothing’s wrong with Arroyo.
Kepp needs to make some sort of an adjustment to avoid being a double play machine.
I know I keep saying this, but that Arroyo extension might end up being the worst move Krivsky ever made.
Okay, second-worst.
The Washington trade is what defeated any chance of Krivsky being a success here.
Arroyo’s 5.55 ERA says there is something wrong with Bronson.
Looks like the ump is having a hard time reading Arroyo.
Is Jocketty accepting an Oscar? He’s reading off names like an acceptance speech.
Ball 1 on Sampson was a strike; strike 3 on Towels was a ball; ball 3 on Pence was a strike; Ball 3 on Towels in the 2nd inning was a strike.
They need to ask Walt if he plans on wearing leather pants.
Jocketty: “getting into broadcasting” . . . please keep trying, Walt!
Arroyo’s problem is that he’s lost a few MPH off his fastball, which makes his wide assortment of sliders and curveballs less effective. I’m not sure, barring an unseen/unreported injury, you can fix that.
Uh, why was Phillips playing 5 feet from second base with Matsui at bat?
All this and Berkman is 0 for 2.
I think there might be something wrpng with Arroyo . . . /cough/
The odd thing about Arroyo is he is striking out a hitter per inning. From that you would conclude it is a matter of consistency.
Watch him end up on the DL in the next couple of days with Bailey getting the call to return to the Reds.
“The Washington trade is what defeated any chance of Krivsky being a success here.”
I don’t understand how anyone could come to this conclusion. There were two potential/quality major leaguers in that trade: Bill Bray and Daryl Thompson.
Alright, what else is there to do tonight?
Wow. This is terrible. 7 runs now, after almost getting out of it without allowing any? Blerg.
608-709.
Reds record since acquiring the Michael Jordan of baseball.
Lefty, I’m not saying that in the long run it will not be a trade that benefits the Reds but its intended purpose of having an immediate impact was a failure. Plus the spectre of its greatest failure, Gary Majewski, looms large.
How many trips to the Dominican Republic has Thom Brennaman ever made?
Comeback time!!!
Hairston needs to go extra bases to avoid the double play.
Let’s go, Keppy!!! Let’s get this comeback rolling.
Keppinger’s first error but Votto should have made a better effort.
This season is quickly becoming another example of pure ineptitude … we only have a chance to win IF Harang, Cueto or Volquez pitch near shutout baseball. Arroyo & the 5th spot are near hopeless. And here we are in the 7th inning of yet another game getting blown out and shut down by a pitcher who until he faced us, couldnt get his ERA out of the Josh Fogg hemosphere. Sickening … just plain sickening to watch.
Dunn hits a single to clog 1B.
Dusty’s son is pinch hitting.
Patterson has found his niche – pinch hitting.
Dusty’s other son swings at the first pitch. Chip off the old block.
I believe that at bat for Votto makes it 7 straight swings without taking a pitch for Joey. I don’t remember the at bat before the last three.
This ump wants outta here.
I really think it’s about time to give up hope on Arroyo. Last year he had a lot of quality starts but he didn’t look that good and the talk was always that he could do better, he’s having an off year, blah blah. But I think I’m done thinking like that. The guy had one good year…I don’t think he’s actually any good…
So do I. Game 1 of a series: chalk it up as a loss. 9-3 final tonight.
Well, I’m not impressed so far, Jocketty. Strike 1 if you ask me. (joke…)
I think Arroyo has an arm injury.
