Reds chasing Mike Piazza?

Dusty Baker says he hasn’t been telling people that Mike Piazza is going to sign with the Reds.

I’ll believe that transaction is going to happen when I see it. Piazza would provide some much-needed right-handed power, but I really don’t think he’s a viable option at catcher at this point in his career.

Catcher? If Piazza signs anywhere it will probably be as a DH or 1st baseman.

I’d like to see it happen. Baker could play him at first against lefties and use him as power bat off the bench. Jolbert Cabrera and Jerry Hairston shouldn’t be options. Neither is going to hit the long ball.

I think Dusty himself could “chase” and *catch* Mike Piazza. :)

He could come and join in on the weirdest platoon at first base in the history of the game

An MLB advance scout with intimate knowledge of the Reds says the Piazza rumor is just that, and doesn’t believe there’s an ounce of foundation. Says he would have definitely heard something. He did say the Reds were hot for Gerald Laird but Texas wants a top-tier prospect and Krivsky refuses to part with any of his top 10 in this deal.

Today, Hal McCoy quotes Dusty as dismissing the rumor.

If they could find a taker for Hatteberg he would be nice platoon at first against lefties and could catch in a pinch. They sure need something against lefties.

Man, you know you’re hurtin’ bad for right handed power when Piazza comes up.

Just goes to show you how piss poor this team is against left handed pitching. I’d almost be willing to trade Dunn to the Phillies straight up for Pat Burrell. At least he can hit lefties.
