Okay, Dunn is leading MLB in walks, but he hasn’t been hitting, right? Maybe it’s time for Dusty to move him up to 3rd in the order temporarily so he gets thrown a few more strikes. That might get him jump started. At the very least his walks wouldn’t be as likely to go to waste.
Fogg suddenly reminds me of Eric Milton – albeit less expensive. A free agent signee who inspires low expectations and an optimistic upside of league-average, who nevertheless disappoints mightily.
Thom and Welsh, to their credit, are noting that Dunn is walking a lot, which (1) helps the team while he’s slumping, and (2) is the result of the Cubs pitching around him.
I was starting to type in how Dusty’s “be aggressive” advice to Votto resulted in a popup …. and next thing the ball is bouncing off the warning track.
Big Z is throwing the ball all over the place, and the Reds are hacking. I don’t think they’ve swung at a struke yet.
Fogg’s pretty stellar. How about the Reds pay me league minimum and I pitch. I’m pretty sure I can’t do any worse. 7-1 Cubs…no outs, runners on 2nd and 3rd.
Maybe we need a brawl between Fogg and Valentin. Worked for the Cubs last year. I’d like to see Valentin walk up to Fogg and start pointing all over the field in reaction to all the hits Fogg has given up.
Last season, or maybe 2 seasons ago, the Reds had a minor leaguer come in in relief late in a game or extra innings and pitched something like 2 or 3 scoreless innings and picked up the win. I’ll see if I can’t dig up that DOTF or player.
That comment by Welsh needs to be delivered to the dugout. We’ll treat the team like a group of little leaguers and incite them with a mustache shaving.
By the way, looking at Eddie Priest’s line (who?) from that 1998 game, Jack McKeon knew he was Done after just 5 batters. Those were the days. Tonight Fogg was allowed to face 16 batters, getting 5 more outs than Priest at a cost of 5 more runs.
It was Asadoorian. He now pitches for the Jacksonville Suns. Here is a brief profile:
Batted .267 with 4 HR and 29 RBI in 99 gameswith Double-A Chattanooga…from 4/11-5/4 was on the disabled list with a right oblique strain…didn’t allow a run in any of his 3 pitching appearances (4ip, 4h, 0bb,7k)…on 7/5 at West Tenn, made his pro pitching debut and earned the 8-6 victory as he fired 2.0 scoreless innings of relief (5k)…will work exclusively as a pitcherbeginning in 2007.
Silver lining – in a whuppin’ like this, Brantley and Brennaman get slap-happy and just joke around on topics unrelated to baseball, instead of endlessly beating down on the various Reds that aren’t executing.
They definitely need to shake up things. I’d bring up Bellisle, Bruce, and Hairston/Cabrera, move Fogg to long relief; and send EE (it worked last year), Lincoln (unfortunately can’t cut Fogg), and Hopper down to Louisville.
Marty just had the most amazing, enjoyable rant I’ve ever heard on WLW. Probably because his target was Cubs fans. “Quite honestly, this is the kind of behavior that makes you want to see this Cubs team lose. And so typical of Cubs fans.
I hope that they trade Hatteberg.. He doesn’t seem to be a good fit as a back-up/pinch hitter. If they wait too long to trade him, his value will most likely go down if he’s still hitting under .200. They should get it done soon, cash in on a couple of prospects, and plug in Votto at first base everyday.
Chris – I didn’t realize that Fogg was only making $400K; I was thinking it was around $3M. They should cut Fogg and keep Lincoln when Bellisle returns.

Not looking good for Fogg – the wind is blowing out with wind gusts up to 40 mph…
Nice night at wrigley wind blowing out maybe it will help against zambrano
What was the point of skipping Fogg yesterday if he’s pitching today?
Watching Patterson play in CF makes me realize how hard Freel made it look.
Fogg is terrible. How soon can Belisle get here?
Fukydome is going to single. No chance he hits into that DP.
Fogg hits Ramirez to load the bases with 1 out, now 2-0 to Fukudome
I’ve already had it with this bunch.
Repeat.
Exactly what I just arrived to say. Yeesh.
What a perfect time for non-blackout games to finally come on. :\
Oh, Dick Pole finally makes an appearance? Why can’t that guy get out of the dugout before games are out of reach?
At least Brandon Phillips is having a good time.
They’re going to score 100 tonight, the way he’s throwing. I swear.
Fogg suddenly reminds me of Eric Milton – albeit less expensive. A free agent signee who inspires low expectations and an optimistic upside of league-average, who nevertheless disappoints mightily.
I’ll take Belisle Tuesday, please.
84 MPH fastball?
LLM making it obvious why Piazza CANNOT be our catcher.
Brandon Phillips trying to hit a 5 run HR.
Thom and Welsh, to their credit, are noting that Dunn is walking a lot, which (1) helps the team while he’s slumping, and (2) is the result of the Cubs pitching around him.
Cheapo hit for EE. Now maybe Votto can start heating up.
A hit falls in for Edwin and his average is over the Mendoza line!
Good Lord.
I was starting to type in how Dusty’s “be aggressive” advice to Votto resulted in a popup …. and next thing the ball is bouncing off the warning track.
Big Z is throwing the ball all over the place, and the Reds are hacking. I don’t think they’ve swung at a struke yet.
Idiotic baserunning from EE.
Votto’s already heated. He enters tonight with a BA over .300.
We’re going to win tonight. Even after that.
At least Votto got to 3rd. Nice running for him.
I’m already tired of watching bad baseball..
What did Fogg do different this inning?
Different? He threw the ball where their bats weren’t. Also, bottom of the order + the leadoff hitter he was able to retire the first time around.
Phillips takes three pitches in a row, all strikes. Stop the presses!
He swung right through 3 in a row last time, so at least he’s trying something different.
I hope they make Fogg finish this entire game.
Digging an early grave are the Reds. Seems like Mccrakin did as good or better than Baker.
The ever-folksy and astute Jeff Brantley: “You can tell that Josh Fogg is not comfortable with what he brought to the party tonight.”
Fogg’s pretty stellar. How about the Reds pay me league minimum and I pitch. I’m pretty sure I can’t do any worse. 7-1 Cubs…no outs, runners on 2nd and 3rd.
Sighhhhhhh…..
I think I’ll go to Louiville and watch the Bats play.
Calling Matt Bellisle!!!
I’m starting to think that my Sunday trip to cincy may be more of a punishment than a reward for my baseball players.
Calling Homer Bailey
Fogg should have a Majewski type ERA after this one.
Even Zambrano’s hitting….
Is it time to think the Reds might not be any good this year? The whole “it’s early” thing is wearing thin now.
Krivsky sure can sign some losers.
At least I get to see Harang on Sunday.
On a positive note, Jay Bruce had a great game today.
What is the freakin’ problem between Lincoln and Valentin?
This is just sad!
Valentin’s days numbered?
This is shaping up to be one of those games where a position player gets some mound time.
Good point, Chris W. Reds have no long relievers. I can’t remember the last Reds position player to pitch – did Freel ever get the chance?
Maybe EE could pitch. That sinker might be effective on the mound tonight.
Maybe this team needs a good bench clearing brawl.
EE would be deceiving with all of the different arm angles he could deliver it from.
Maybe we need a brawl between Fogg and Valentin. Worked for the Cubs last year. I’d like to see Valentin walk up to Fogg and start pointing all over the field in reaction to all the hits Fogg has given up.
Lenny Harris, June 1, 1998
Ha! Edwin fools the Reds’ first baseman all the time…
Looks like it was Lenny Harris in 1998. Threw a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout.
Take a look at what Eddie Priest and Weathers did in that game. I totally forgot Weathers’ first stint as a Red. Blocked it out, I guess.
Last season, or maybe 2 seasons ago, the Reds had a minor leaguer come in in relief late in a game or extra innings and pitched something like 2 or 3 scoreless innings and picked up the win. I’ll see if I can’t dig up that DOTF or player.
You beat me. Shazzbot.
That comment by Welsh needs to be delivered to the dugout. We’ll treat the team like a group of little leaguers and incite them with a mustache shaving.
Fukudome. What a wacky name!
Wasn’t that the guy that was then converted to pitching full-time, Chris W.? Asadoorian?
My lord! Affeldt struck out the side!

Patterson approaching the Mendoza line.
Who will make the most “it was the wind” excuses?
A. Fogg
B. Fay
C. McCoy
D. Baker
Hopefully some day we’ll see Fukudome face Asadoorian in the most humorously-named at bat ever.
I vote for Baker.
Coutlangus facing Fukudome would be the at bat with the most snickering.
Silver lining – in a whuppin’ like this, Brantley and Brennaman get slap-happy and just joke around on topics unrelated to baseball, instead of endlessly beating down on the various Reds that aren’t executing.
At least I don’t have to stay up late tonight. What’s happened to the pitching the last 3 games?
At least we have a 40 million dollar closer *snicker snicker*
ugh.
DA, you mean they aren’t blaming Dunn and Encarnacion for tonight’s loss?
Like I said – slap-happy. In fact, Brantley praised Edwin’s plate approach earlier. (contrite after the ‘clutch’ debacle?)
Here’s a role for David Weathers that I can support.
Affeldt wanted to be a starter this year and he can’t go more than 2 innings in a game where the team needs someone to step up and eat some innings??
Hopper’s hitting over .300? When did that happen?
Keppinger knocks in Votto, who had doubled. The comeback is on.
Is it just me, or does Votto look much more confident at the plate tonight. He might be ready to break out.
Betcha he sits tomorrow.
Jay Bruce pulled after the 6th tonight in Louisville after going 3-3 with a 3B and HR. think something is in the works?
Keppinger looks great when he’s getting base hits, but remarkably feeble when he swings and misses. The other guy most like that was Barry Larkin.
Dare to dream, Tyler….
Kent Mercker is getting kicked around now. Zambrano just crushed that one.
Is it just me, or are the Cubs slugging about 2.500 with 2 strikes tonight?
I don’t remember a Reds pitcher throwing two strikes.
Fogg had everybody 0-2, then found a way to give up a double. Big Z was down 1-2 before clobbering that double.
Am I just being too hard on him, or does Fogg suck?
Huhuh, you said “hard on.”
But no. He certainly sucks. I’d be fine with even a 5.00 ERA out of his spot — 5 IP and 3 ER every time — but he’s not even close.
Shut up, Beavis.
This team is a bunch of Bungholios right now.
EE needs to stick around. Otherwise you’re playing Ryan Freel every day. As Baker said today (Fay’s blog), as EE goes, so go the Reds.
Why can’t Fogg be cut?
Does Coffey have options?
What behavior is he talking about?
I’m not sure it matters, BenL. Who’s going to sign that lump?
I hope that they trade Hatteberg.. He doesn’t seem to be a good fit as a back-up/pinch hitter. If they wait too long to trade him, his value will most likely go down if he’s still hitting under .200. They should get it done soon, cash in on a couple of prospects, and plug in Votto at first base everyday.
Mercifully, the game ends.
Just ugly….
I think the behavior is referring to the throwing of baseballs on the field after Dunner’s blast
Chris – I didn’t realize that Fogg was only making $400K; I was thinking it was around $3M. They should cut Fogg and keep Lincoln when Bellisle returns.
Fogg was signed for an even $1 million, I thought.
If the Reds are willing to eat $3.5 million from Stanton, then they sure as hell could cut Fogg if they wanted to.
