Ever heard of this kid Johnny Cueto? Well, he’s a pretty good young pitcher who pitched okay in his debut last week. He’s pitching tonight against the first-place Milwaukee Brewers, who counter with 1-0 Jeff Suppan.
Anyone else looking forward to seeing how Cueto follows up his first act?
One more thing: if you don’t know anything about Milwaukee, listen in on this conversation between two academics as they discuss the city:
Wayne Campbell: So, do you come to Milwaukee often?
Alice Cooper: Well, I’m a regular visitor here, but Milwaukee has certainly had its share of visitors. The French missionaries and explorers began visiting here in the late 16th century.
Pete: Hey, isn’t “Milwaukee” an Indian name?
Alice Cooper: Yes, Pete, it is. In fact , it’s pronounced “mill-e-wah-que” which is Algonquin for “the good land.”
Wayne Campbell: I was not aware of that.
Alice Cooper: I think one of the most interesting things about Milwaukee is that it’s the only American city to elect three Socialist mayors.
Wayne Campbell: Does this guy know how to party or what?
Enjoy the game, and discuss it here.
does anybody know where i can listen to the game on the internet. I am in IL and can’t get it here. I am desperate to at least hear this game
Is anyone else listening to the game on XM radio? Both of the Brewers’ broadcasters (Bob Uecker and the other guy) sound EXACTLY the same!
mlb.com? I really wish it was on TV.
Looks like the umpire behind the plate tonight is borderline retarded.
3 up, 3 K’s in the second. This is nice to see; I hope his arm holds up.
This is the first time I have gotten to see Cueto, and he is impressive to watch.
Hey Greg – if you don’t subscribe to the mlb.com monopoly for radio feeds, try “the game live dot com” (no spaces). I seem to recall one of those links working for me once when the mlb feed was out…maybe the Dayton radio station feed?
Deaner – I’ve noticed that in years past about the Brewers’ broadcasters: Uecker and whats-his-name sounded exactly the same, but I thought maybe it was just me. It’s eerie, right?
Whoa, wait a second – Suppan is batting eighth! Jason Kendall is batting 9th!
A decenct outfielder would have at least had a chance to throw him out at home.
Cueto scored upon! Stop the presses!
Took a broken-bat flare single & a bit of a bobble by Dunn, but they all look the same in the boxscore.
Kendall has batted 9th all season DA.
Thanks for the link, DA. http://www.thegamelive.com/baseballmlb.html#cin — WATH has the game.
I tell you what, Cueto and Volquez will be very eefective if they continue to locate the knees like they have in their starts. It has been almost amazing how consisitent they have been on the knees.
Huh. I’m surprised I missed that – when LaRussa moved certain pitchers up in the lineup it was treated like a major news event. Yost does it for all his pitchers suddenly and it’s greeted by the media with a resounding, “eh.”
Yeah, they talked a little about it on opening day, and that was about it. It has been a good idea thus far for them.
That sucks, twice in one game…Dunn actually has a nice looking swing today!
The line on Homer Bailey: 5.2 IP, 0 R/ER, 7K.
Maybe he’s had enough of these other young guys showing him up?
Good for Homer. 90 pitches not quite as efficient as his first go-round, but who cares?
Bill Bray also had a nice little outing, striking out 3 in 1-1/3 innings.
watching these anemic bats is getting old. brandon wood and dan haren, ok. jeff suppan? the reds should be able to hit jeff suppan.
Bako nailed by a foultip. Reds need healthy catchers!
What the hell – doesn’t Kendall know that he’s washed up? Somebody needs to tell him, because he’s 2-2 and now hitting .529 on the season.
When is the offense going to finally click for more than 1 inning? At some point we are going to have to string things together.
That is awesome by Grif, bunting right here, getting a guy on is great.
Griffey with a bunt single. Good for him.
Is it just me, or does BP have a massive upper cut going on right now?
3 easy flyouts
You have a struggling offense and the consensus No.1 minor league offensive player.
Something has to give, doesn’t it?
Jay Bruce leading off, Corey Patterson as the 4th OF, sounds right to me.
Jay isn’t a leadoff hitter, and I don’t think he would be as successful batting there, He he were to come up he would need to bat 6th-7th…which a matter of fact is where we are missing needed production.
Jay is struggling early in Louisville. Just FYI. Yeah, speaking of anemic offenses, the River Bats have scored a grand total of 1 run in Homer Bailey’s two starts thus far.
I really don’t know what is going to spark the offense. Griffey is starting to warm up, Dunner had a couple of good cuts, E5 still looks terrible at the plate, and Votto looks tonight like he might begin to warm up.
Tonight is the first chance I’ve had a chance to see the Reds in HD. It’s awesome.
That K of Fielder was awesome, too.
Winning this game for Cueto would be even better.
No sweat in the 6th for Cueto. What’s his pitch count?
I’m a little surprised here, but the bullpen needs a break and would be nice to get 1 more full inning from Cueto.
Corey Patterson is shaping up to be quite the hero.
84 pitches for Cueto through six. Yeah, I’d like to see him go out there for one more, but it isn’t gonna happen.
Tying run is on first, and Dusty has to pinch hit for Cueto, methinks.
84 pitches through 6 for Johnny Cue.
Stole 2nd, terrible CALL!!
I’d love nothing more than that, DA.
Close the book on Cueto:
6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 7 K, 0 BB. You can’t ask for anything more out of anyone in consecutive starts. When you consider it’s a guy making his first two starts in the big leagues….well, it’s almost incomprehensible.
Is the HD broadcast on about a 3-minute delay? Also, Cueto batted for himself, so the book is still open.
C’mon, Patterson!
I love Corey!!!
you’re a little late Chad!
Hey, you’re right, DA! I had the sound off and was listening to my wife and I thought it was Hopper batting.
Nice. Maybe he can still get the win.
I hate Bill Hall!
The Red killer is at it again…He would be the best player in the history of the game if he played against the reds everyday.
Bill Hall The Reds Killer is back after a year’s absence. 2-1 MIL.
Oh yeah, I forgot I was a little behind on the Tivo. Ooops!
I feel a little silly now.
I hate Bill Hall more than any player in the league.
Give Dusty some credit early on… He left Cueto in to try and get a W or get off the hook. And then he takes him out after 1 out in the 7th. Not sure of Pitch Count, but should be at 100 or lower.
Well, Cueto can’t get the win. Let’s just hope he doesn’t get the loss on a night when he pitched so well.
Cueto threw 96 pitches. And I agree, CW.
18 strikeouts, no walks for Cueto in his major league career. Not a bad K/BB ratio.
I’m liking the prospect of Burton setting up Coco. If only Weathers would get out of the way!
That’s the clearest indicator yet that Dusty has learned about pitchcounts. If this was vintage 2003, Dusty would have at the least had Cueto finish the inning.
Other than his first outing of the year. ole Burton has really taken up where he left off last year.
Great rule five acquisition for Krivsky. Burton is going to very good. He’s already very good.
Of course he could be setting us all up for the pennant run. At which point Cueto will throw 140 pitches per start and then flame out after this year due to overwork!
You’re right, DA. Dusty has been very good on that point thus far. He looks like he learned his lesson, and that bodes well for the young guys.
I’m sure the front office also told him not to overwork those guys.
Shut up, CW.
Time for the bats to awaken, now that the junkballer is out of there, and get Johnny off the hook.
Sorry. Kerry and Mark told me to say that!
Reason for optimism, says Chris Welsh, about Cueto and Volquez. That’s quite an understatement.
That bunt single earlier pays dividends later – no Griffey shift for this at-bat.
Swinging at the first pitch isn’t working out for Kep tonight.
i demand hits. heart of the order his. when we’re relying on bako, cueto, and patterson to get our runs in, we’re in trouble.
Welsh just said the game is about human beings. Not as much about stats and calculators. The statheads are rolling in their/our graves.
NICE! with the shift, JR is out.
This is some kind of battle here. 6 foul-offs for Griffey.
Just get on base BP
[blockquote]Welsh just said the game is about human beings. Not as much about stats and calculators.[/blockquote]
Right – the same way that the insurance industry is all about individual incidents and accidents. Actuarial tables? What’re those?
just curious, but does Milwaukee encourage their fans to sit behind home plate and the dugouts? There is no one sitting down the LF foul line, but tons behind the dugout.
WOW what a low strike to BP
I haven’t been liking the low strike calls all night but it’s been pretty consistent anyway.
BP swung at strike 1.
Will the clutch version of Edwin make an appearance?
EE is not clutch!!
Bases are clogged!!!
Mota = David Weathers
Votto with a chance to be a hero..
Hopper Ph’ing for Votto? Come on Dusty. Geez!!!???
Wow. Hopper for Votto. Not sure I get that one.
OK, with Votto showing signs of life tonight, he’ll get a chance to be clutch…against a lefty specialist.
It’s times like these that remind me just how few options this bench gives to Dusty.
C’mon, Hopper!
Hopper in for Votto. Probably a wise move with the southpaw and his delivery coming in.
3 unassisted. Heck, Votto could have done that.
Oof. Can Norris steal 1st?
That’s where not having a quality RH bat on the bench just kills us…
Is there another right-handed hitter on the bench? LLMs not that good from that side.
When you PH, and all the announcers can talk about is whether he can still bunt, with the bases loaded and 2 outs…. Then you’ve chosen the wrong PH!!!
I think you may be right, Chad. Votto could have done that. Hoping for a bit of patience from Hopper there.
Seems to me that would be the prime time for a double switch. Put in a new pitcher, bat him in Hopper’s place, and let Hatteberg enter in the 9 hole.
i thought walks were supposed to haunt? i’m starting to become a dusty baker baseclogging convert.
I guess that’s why OPS is more important than OBP, you need someone to Slug the ball to score!
Freel and Castro from the right side, but that’s not quality. Freel is Hopper and Castro is only good on Cinco de Mayo.
In watching this game, I just cant understand how we make a mediocre starting pitcher look so dominant. Suppan was throwing junk up there and we just couldnt do anything with him.
Good point about the “clogging the bases” theory, whether you think it’s nonsense or not.
For Dusty, Edwin would have been better off jumping all over that 3-0 fastball. Instead, he walked, they brought in a lefty specialist, Reds have no decent right handed RBI bat off the bench, and inning over.
I am not necessarily a believer in Dusty’s comments, but, in that situation, I see how a walk by Encarnacion was not beneficial.
Well, maybe we can beat up on Gagne like everyone else does.
Ryan Freel’s days as a Red would appear to be numbered.
This strike zone is ridiculous. The last two ninth innings for the Reds have been a joke.
Is Patterson the tying run or last out?
With the game on the line, we have Freel, Valentin, and Patterson hitting. Terrible.
Another strike at least three inches off the plate.
PATTERSON!!!!!!!
I LOVE COREY PATTERSON!!!!!!!!!
C PAT THE HERO!!!
New game. How about some new umps?
Patterson does it again!!! Ties it with a HOMER!!!!
I love Corey Patterson!!!
MY FAVORITE RED!!!!!!!!!!
No way! Go Patterson!
Is that Reggie Jackson?
I stand corrected.
Oh. My.
Another hit for Kepp. Maybe Junior can get into the action here.
Thank goodness Cueto doesn’t get saddled with a loss.
Back to the shift on Griffey.
Patterson now leads the team in homeruns. Might even have a .300+ OBP..
Oh well. Is Coco coming in?
Or, as I fear, is Weathers coming in?
Patterson is interesting because he seems to have that “warning track” power, except for places like Philly, Milwaukee, and GABP.
Which means, we could see 30-30 from him playing Milwaukee as much as we do, the Phillies, and of course GABP.
The same guy, in let’s say Washington or San Diego, would struggle to hit 10 home runs.
*Crossing fingers*
Crap, Stormy Weathers is rolling into Milwaukee.
Weathers retired Bill Hall. That’s huge.
Anyone else watching the game in HD? The sound seems to have gone mostly silent. I can barely hear anything. Flipping over to SD, it’s okay.
Okay, good job by Weathers. I hope it’s his only inning. I don’t trust him.
Quality from Weathers. Free baseball.
Dunn needs to stop being a nancy and finally hit the ball out of the park for once this year.
We’ve been getting the hits tonight, just not the big hits. Hope Phillips, Dunn and EeE can start us off right.
I’m watching in HD, and I noticed that very briefly, but it’s fine now.
And the graphic tells the story. 10 runners LOB thus far.
An extra innings win would be great, and a great way to start the road trip against a division rival.
How many runners have we left on base so far this year?
I wonder how that ranks in the league…
Brandon Phillips swinging at everything, as usual.
Coco Cordero is up in the pen!
TERRIBLE strike one call on EdE. Almost at his ankles.
One of these walks has to come around to score eventually, I have to believe.
Gameday says it was above the knees, Chad. There have been much worse calls than that.
Gameday is full of crap. Terrible pitch.
But you are right, there have been some horrible calls earlier tonight.
The more I think about it, the more I dislike this current roster.
In Freel and Hopper, you have essentially the same player; Castro is utterly useless; and there’s nobody on the bench who can hit the ball out of the park from the right side.
You end up with situations where facially-stupid moves like “start Juan Castro” and “hit Hopper for Votto” are actually reasonable decisions, in context.
before tonight the reds were tied for second in MLB with 32 walks and 17th with 32 runs.
Weathers in for a second inning. I have an uneasy feeling in the pit of my stomach. Hope I’m wrong.
weathers actually looks like he’s dealing. as much as he ever does.
Leadoff single. I’m still feeling uneasy.
If you’re actually watching tonight’s game, you’ll see that most of the walks were semi-intentional (Dunn hasn’t seen a strike since the 3rd inning)
And the beginning of the end…
Chad you’ve been feeling that way for 3 years now.
FWIW, I agree completely with Chris’ comment about roster construction above. It’s really just a silly collection of 25 guys, when you look at it.
True, Chris. I’m not a Weathers fan.
Where was Patterson playing that kept him from catching a liner to the very middle of center field?
Base hit for Kendall. First and third with one out.
Uneasy.
Grande is talking about how that Dillon dude has only sac bunted “once in the past 4 years.”
True, but that’s like saying I haven’t bunted much. Dillon has 36, 0, 76, and 3 ABs in 05-08 seasons.
If you had a strikeout-specialist in your bullpen, would now be the time?
I love corey patterson…i hate david weathers.
Guess it wasn’t a “save” situation.
Stupid Jason Kendall. but that’s twice that he’s gotten a hit that doesn’t score the runner from 2nd.
Later, gents. At least Cueto’s quick work gets us to bed on time.
David Weathers blows another game.
How many times is he going to blow games before he isn’t the setup guy any longer. I’ll take Burton before him any day of the week…and probably Mercker, too.
I’ve said it before: Weathers is my least favorite Red since Danny Graves.
Why are we paying Cordero $46 million again?
Cueto is a stud.
Weathers sucks.
what in the hell has gotten into jason kendal?
somebody besides corey patterson learn how to hit!
To be fair, Burton did pitch tonight.
And why wasn’t Kendall IBB in that situation?
Those three hitters Hardy-Kendall-Weeks have no business getting on base. Even one of them getting on is beating the odds by about two-fold. And all three got hits off Weathers.
Blerg.
True, and Burton looked great. I wasn’t specifically talking about this game, just that their roles should be switched in general.
Well, good night, folks. I’m going to bed irritated instead of happy.
burton pitched 2 innings tonight. weathers looked fine to me. he got through some tough hitters in a 1-2-3 ninth. then gave up a single on a pretty good pitch, a single to the greatest hitter ever born jason kendal, and got a ground ball that was close to being a double play ball.
so it’s not great, but is it that terrible? he didn’t get hit hard. he probably gets out of that inning with one run scored.
our pitchers gave up 3 runs in 10 innings. if we need them to do better than that to win, we might as well call up the whole louisville squad right now.
You’re right, Al. The thing is – Weathers pretty much always pitches like that, but had pretty great results the last couple years. I think this is a little bit of luck evening out.
Hopefully Dunn is on track. He hit the ball pretty hard before the stopped pitching to him. EE could use some sort of encouragement, an ass-kicking, or maybe a nap.
On the bench comment, I have to agree. We have no pop off the bench other than LLM. I had hoped we’d have fixed that with Craig Wilson but apparently his off season surgery didnt work out. Reggie Sanders anyone?
2 questions for the 10th inning –
Why pitch to the league leader in BA who already has 2 hits on the night with 1 out and 1B open? If you answer ‘Weekes is up next,’ how about the fact that you have to pitch to him regardless?
Why pitch to Weekes, who you have no chance of doubling up, with an open base and the winning run on 3rd? The hitter behind him is batting .125.
oh, i agree chris, no doubt about it. as i said during cueto’s last start, weathers is no relief ace. i fully expect him to have an ERA around 4, maybe a bit higher.
thing is, over the last few years that was the best we could do in the pen, so people talk about him like he’s awesome, but that’s about about a run every couple of innings or so. like tonight.
still, 9 hits and 5 walks and we come away with 2 runs. that’s bad.
i’m not sure i pitch around rickie weeks tyler, but i was thinking the same thing with kendal. only the runner at second mattered, after they bunted i thought it was an invitation to walk him.
set up the force play, take the bat out of his hand, no harm done in putting an extra guy on, i don’t see how that’s even a choice really.
observations:
1. I love the way Jr played tonight. THAT’S how you defeat the shift.
2.Dunn is frustrating the mess out of me. He made a terrible defensive play, and while Grande made a spectacle of talking about how hard he hit the ball and how Fielder kept robbing him, it happened because he was hitting into the teeth of the shift. Slap one down third the way he did the other night and see what happens.
3. If EE could hit, Dunn would have seen more pitches. I’d walk him too. When Gonzo comes back, Welcome to the pine Edwin.
4. Batting Kendall ninth was a stroke of genius. Kendall has a propensity to hit into the double play, but with the pitcher to sacrifice the hitter over, that threat is eliminated and the worse he does is advance the runner for the top of the order.
5.We had our best lineup on the field tonight with a middle of the rotation starter on the field. We have to do better.
6. Another game leaving double digits on base. That’s what I call clogging the bases.
7. Weathers didn’t pitch that bad, all soft hits and it ended with a ground ball through the shortstop hole. Could have been a DP. I thought he looked real good in the previous inning.
8. Burton is very impressive.
Cueto…is greato.
I also wonder if Dusty needs a different lineup vs. lefties and righties. I think this L, R, L, R, L, R lineup is hurting the team more than helping it. It’s set this way to avoid the potential of a relief specialist coming in during the late innings, meanwhile the starters face the starter at least twice, maybe 3-4 times. Bat Junior and Dunn back-to-back vs mediocre RH starters. If the lineup goes, L-R-L-L-R-L, I think that scores more runs against a righty starter, esp one like Suppan last night.
Apr-9 lineup:
Corey Patterson CF
Ryan Freel 3B
Ken Griffey Jr. RF
Brandon Phillips 2B
Adam Dunn LF
Jeff Keppinger SS
Scott Hatteberg 1B
Javy Valentin C
Josh Fogg P
(sorry, the game thread’s not up yet, but wanted to make a comment before I took off for the day.) Baker must have a fear of batting 2 lefties or 2 righties back-to-back.
Encarnacion’s sitting.
The “ideal #2 hitter” is batting 5th again.
Votto sits after getting 2 hits last night.
I don’t know the sample size for each player, but the Fay does offer these stats:
Griffey has three home runs off Milwaukee starter Dave Bush. He’s 7-for-15 off Bush overall. Others v. Bush: Hatteberg .400 with a homer. Freel .455, Valentin .429.
