Budget stuff

If you’re interested, the Reds have the 18th highest payroll in the majors, including $3 million for Corey Patterson.

  • Wait, 3 MIL? Fine piece of negotiation to sign him in February to a split contract paying him 3 MIL if he made the major league team.

He was unsigned, meaning his leverage was next to nil. What gives?

I’m not knocking the signing. If he’s batting 7th or 8th vs RH and has a right-handed caddy, he brings enough to the table with his defense and power I can live w/ him to give Bruce a bit more time in the minors.

    But 3 MIL?

WHAT??!?! Patterson was signed to a deal with that kind of clause in it after being released by Baltimore? It was a minor-league contract he signed, and he didn’t even get that until the middle of spring-training – that indicates a clear lack of interest from other teams.

April Fools’ Day is over, right? Because that is untoward. It is not toward!

Hey, 3 MIL is the average salary in MLB these days … that said, 3 MIL is way too much for Patterson. I watched him flounder and not live up to potential/expectations (depending on your view) in Chicago to know that 3 MIL is way too much for him

But he’s one of Dusty’s boys from another team, sooooooooo … there you go

As for the Reds being 18th in payroll, I’m not that concerned about that. These days it seems it’s not the amount you spend but what you get for the money spend, especially in the NL. I mean look at last year’s playoff teams. Colorado and Arizona – and maybe Philly but not sure about it, and Cleveland in the AL were in the middle of the pack in spending last year. Granted the Red Sox won the WS with their huge payroll. So you can win without breaking the bank. I mean, other than playoff appearances, what has all the $$$ the Yankees have spent got them – not a WS ring. They didn’t start their excess spending until after the 2001 or 2002 season and they’ve only made the WS once and LOST to the Marlins. But they’re loading up on high-priced stars hasn’t netted them a WS ring. On the flip side, yes the Red Sox inked Manny to a HUGE DEAL, but imho David Ortiz has been just as good of, if not better signing and they got Big Papi for around a half million – A HALF MILLION!!!! What a steal.
