I hate the guy, don’t know what he possibly could have left in the tank at this juncture. Seems like we have better options, or let me put it this way, we damn well better pray we have better options.
Spring training, extra pitchers, no big deal. Mercker, Williamson, Graves….OK, kidding about Graves. Look at whoever you want, give the youngsters some lessons and let them throw some batting practice. Maybe one will stick, if not, no biggie. If so, good move and you look like a genius (until the elbow blows out).
Merker was decent for the Reds in the past. I am glad that he is getting a chance. He is seasoned. He is not on the 40 man so it is a try out. who knows maybe he can find a new spark on the game.
The only reason I can make out of this is that the team is trying to anchor down a good clubhouse environment (cutting cantu and trading hobbs). Maybe they feel like if he does make the team somehow he brings that environment. I just hope he doesn’t block any young talent
I agree with Bill. This is no big deal. Either he has a spring that will knock you socks off or he’s back to retirement. I don’t think its an indication of anything. Its pretty much meaningless.
Those two things keep tons of these old guys around. Mercker wasn’t bad in his day and probably can get one out most days, but that is about that this point.

No big deal…he either makes the big club or they release him. Like Hermanson last year…

Sure there are better options… the Reds have a several good LHPs to work out of the bullpen.

Waste of time and not the sign of a serious organization. Other than that, no downside.

He’s cheap and left handed.
