Roundup

I have several things I’ve been meaning to post, so here goes…

–Could Johnny Cueto make the Reds rotation out of spring training next year? At least one scout thinks so, and I wouldn’t bet against it.

–Can anyone explain a single reason why the Reds would be interested in Jamey Carroll?

–Team awards were handed out:

Second baseman Brandon Phillips was named winner of the Ernie Lombardi Award as the club’s Most Valuable Player. The Johnny Vander Meer Award as the Most Outstanding Pitcher belongs to Aaron Harang. First baseman Scott Hatteberg was honored with the Joe Nuxhall Good Guy Award for his upstanding relationship with the local media.

The awards are given annually by the Cincinnati chapter of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America.

The Reds also named top prospect Jay Bruce as winner of the Chief Bender Award as the organization’s Minor League Player of the Year.

–The Reds got RHP Justin James from the Jays as the PTBNL in the Buck Coats trade.

–RedsFest 2007 is going on now, and they’re paying tribute to the Ol’ Lefthander, Joe Nuxhall. It appears a surprise guest showed up unannounced today.

–That last link contained this blurb about Adam Dunn:

Left fielder Adam Dunn was one of the more prominent players in attendance on Friday. Dunn, who had his $13 million club option picked up on Oct. 31, was hopeful that he could remain with the club under a long-term contract.

“Definitely,” Dunn said. “We have a lot of time for that. The main thing was to get back for at least one more year, and we’ve done that.”

I’d love to see Dunn locked up long-term. Get it done, Krivsky.

Why would anyone be interested in Carroll?

Good news all around, otherwise. I love to see players like Griffey giving back to the fans.

    Jamey Carroll? Let’s see…

Need infield depth now that we released useful infielder to visit with Sergio in March before we give him back to Braves….

    Uhhh…

Found foolish taker to ill advised 4M/yr contract to Gonzalez, so will be needing another IF….

    Hmmm….

Can never have enough slick fielding weak hitting infielders, so have to stock back up since we let Machado get away this winter….

I’m sure there are many more probable scenario’s for the Red’s interest in Carroll, but I have to move on to anther thread now to piss and moan some more about the intelligence of the Cantu/Valenzuela roster moves. :)

I think I’d beg to differ with the selection of Brandon Phillips as the team MVP. Aaron Harang was much more valuable, and much better, than Phillips was this year. Adam Dunn had a better year too, though we know he could never win anything.

The practical crowning of Brandon Phillips as the second coming of Joe Morgan is going to drive me insane. Seriously, much more of this and I’ll start seething at the mention of his name faster than I do when the words “Ryan Freel” are spoken.

  • Good news, Carroll was traded to Cleveland, so we won’t have to worry about that.
