Reds in Dontrelle Willis market?

From John Heyman at SI.com:

The Reds may make a play for Marlins left-hander Dontrelle Willis. Cincinnati finally has decent prospects to trade — starting with pitcher Homer Bailey and slugger Joey Votto. Josh Hamilton, last year’s feel good story, also should have good value now.

No mention of what it would take to get Willis. I know many here don’t like the idea…the only player on this list I’d part with for him is Hamilton.

Dontrelle Willis was atrocious last year and the Reds should remember that in any trade talks. Right now, even an injury-prone Hamilton is not worth giving up for Willis, in my opinion.

I’d do a Maloney and pelland for willis. I wouldn’t give up too much since we are eating his salary. I know he isn’t seriously expensive yet, but after last year its hard to justify giving him much.

I like Stubbs a lot, but I’d be willing to offer a package starting with him for Willis. I just think he has too much talent to be considered a bust after one bad year, and we def need another starter since Cueto probably won’t be ready by the start of the season. Plus he’s a big name and the reds need that to help boost attendance!

For what we’d need to give up, and also for the salary we’d owe them, I’d much rather have Jonathan Sanchez of SF than Dontrelle.

I wonder if someone could quickly come up w/ a list of all the pitchers in the last, say, 30 years who had pitched 1000 IP in the majors before they turned 26. (Dontrelle has done that, barely.)

My suspicion is that there would be a LOT of major arm injuries in that group.

what about matt cain from san fran
he just doesnt have an offfense to back him up.
i like stubbs but he is an older minor leaguer in my oppinion he is just in single a and hes like 22 he needs to develop faster to make it with the crowded outfield we have.
trade him and someoen else for Willis or cain

Not to mention that he is left handed starter!! We need him but I don’t like the idea of giving up any of our 08 ready prospects: Bailey, Votto, Bruce, Cueto, Maloney, or Hamilton. Trading Stubbs, Moresco(spell check??), Freel, and Hatteburg I really like.

I think that maybe, just maybe Josh Hamilton is overvalued because of all the hype. I think offering to fill their hole in centerfield with him is not that unreasonable, maybe a package with Malloney.

Whether or not he had an off year, 10 wins is 10 wins and I will never give up on a guy who won 22 games in a season at that age. When we resigned him, we’d still probably be paying him less than Eric Milton.

obviously, Votto, Bailey and Bruce are untouchables. (Freel and Hatteburg are dead to me, throw ‘em in if it helps.)

The Cubs are dying for a good left-handed-hitting outfielder, for some reason.

Anyone think the Cubs would give up Murton and Marmol for Junior?

Anyone think the Reds would do that?

Would Griffey approve a deal to the Cubs? (It was mentioned a while back.)

I’d be really sad to see Griffey go — I’ve come around to thinking he a genuinely good guy in the last couple year, not to mention still an excellent hitter — but something about the current roster makeup isn’t balanced.

This is from the Chicago Sun-Times today:

“We still like Murton,” said Hendry, who didn’t speculate on players he’d be willing to trade. “And he knows we like him. Life would be a lot easier if Murton was left-handed.”

(#8) “I will never give up on a guy who won 22 games in a season at that age.”

Somebody mentioned Steve Avery, who won 18 games at age 21 and 23… and wasn’t really worth a crap again. Dwight Gooden, of course, had his peak year at age 20. Frank Tanana dominated until age 24…then disappeared until returning as a journeyman several years later. Then there’s Mark Fidrych: 19-9 at age 21; 27 more starts in his career.

I’d trade Freel and a low-end prospect for him, but that’s about it.

No way the Cubs part with Marmol, that guy is the next F-Rod. If we could get Willis that would be awesome.

What do you think about going after Prior?????? You know Baker wants a mulligan on that one. What do you think it would take?? What about Griffey for Prior, they cover the Griff’s salary and we open up right for Bruce and go after Willis long term!!!! How about that starting line-up Harang, Arroyo, Prior, Willis, and Bailey with Cueto pitching long relief.

I think Harang, Arroyo, Prior, Willis is high hopes for Cincinatti. We may not need that kind of rotation with Cueto in the system anyway.

Good point, Chris, about all those examples, though. I still think Willis is a nice fit, but did you guys see the rumor about our interest in Tim Lincecum? What does everyone think?

Too bad the Reds didn’t just draft Lincecum in 2006. Lincecum-Stubbs straight up!

I like the Fab Four and the decent amount of depth in the minors. Hopefully, the Reds don’t do anything to disrupt the progess made in the minors too much.

The Reds need to spend about 7-8 million guaranteed on a starter and reliever.

I read the Lincecum rumor on mlbtraderumors.com, they think it would take Bruce. What about the Rich Hill for Hamilton rumor??? Regardless it sounds like Krivsky is rattling some cages which is freaking awesome!!!!!

Open door? It appears the door isn’t closed on pitchers Eddie Guardado and Eric Milton returning to the Reds. Neither free agent was offered arbitration on Saturday, but negotiations are still possible.

“Those are two guys we’ll stay in touch with,” Krivsky said.

The Reds declined Guardado’s $3.5 million club option on Oct. 31. Milton hasn’t pitched since having season-ending Tommy John surgery on his left elbow June 15, but Krivsky indicated he could be ready for spring.

For the love of God kill me now!

  • The Chicago Tribune reported the Cubs are inquiring about Hamilton. Reportedly, they are offering Sean Marshall. He’s serviceable, but is he a potential All-Star like Hobbs? No freakin’ way.

I agree — Marshall OK but not special. Hamilton is potentially special… especially since be might be able to play a good centerfield! And hit like, well, The Natural.

Lincecum, though — he’s special. I’d give up much more for him.
