Reds broadcaster Joe Nuxhall is among the nominees for the 2008 Ford C. Frick Award (for the second consecutive year, along with about a million other people). Redleg Nation wishes the Ol’ Lefthander the best of luck. This would be a wonderful honor, especially with the health problems Nuxie has been having lately.
For whatever reason, Thom Brennaman is nominated, as well. Thom’s an outstanding broadcaster, but he seems young to be on the ballot for such an award.
The final ballot for the Frick Award will contain 10 names; three of those names will be selected by fan voting. I urge everyone to go here to vote for Nuxhall (and Brennaman and former Red Alex Trevino) to make the final ballot.

I actually think that every broadcaster, for every team, was “nominated.” Chris Welsh and George Grande, for example, are on the list.
In any event, I respectfully disagree with the statement that Thom is “an outstanding broadcaster.” I find him to be quite typical of “the new breed” of broadcaster, and I don’t mean that in a good way.
Instructive to note that this is voting on nominations to the 10-name final ballot. Hence it almost looks like fans may vote for anyone who is a current broadcaster (excepting those who have won in the past), plus many who have moved on (in more ways than one).
For example, I see that Joe Morgan is on the list of potential nominees, as well as Chris Welsh and George Grande.
I voted for Nuxhall, and for Jon Miller. Almost picked a long-time former Reds broadaster, Waite Hoyte, but instead with my last vote I picked another former Reds announcer Al Michaels. He hasn’t had the opportunity to be a baseball announcer in forever, but maybe he could be persuaded to give up football if he got this award. I can hope.
As much as I enjoyed Joe Nuxhall in his prime, isn’t this award about excellence in broadcasting? If so, as much as Nuxie is a local favorite, can anyone make the argument that he showed excellence in broadcasting?
Nope.
I voted for Nuxie anyway. And Matt Vasgersian, who I think is the best young baseball broadcaster, by a long shot.
Vote also for Tom Cheek, the late great voice of the Toronto Blue Jays.
Joe i wish you the best, you old lefthander. may GOD be with you.
I am really sad when heard that
he died. Joe Nuxhall was a sweet
man. I met him at the Cincinnati
zoo when I went to the bag off
with Kroger. I vote for him to be
on the Hall of Fame. My prayers go
out to his family.
God bless,
Susan Ann Prigan
GOODBYE JOE, YOU WILL NEVER EVER BE FORGOTEN BY ME AS YOU WAS WHAT SUMMER WAS ALL ABOUT. THANKS TO THE NUXALL FAMILY FOR SHARING HIM WITH MY MOM MARGERY GREEN 87 AND MYSELF RICK 50 GOODBYE JOE!
:sad:They needed a lefty in heaven and they sent for and got the best. He also calls home runs and triples and grand slams like no other anywhere. He should not only win the Ford Frick award he should be honorored by the REDS with the renaming of the Stadium The Joe Nuxhall Memorial BallPark, he already has the statue and the “rounding third and heading for home” quote on the side. No one in Cincinnati, or MLB would argue with this change. And,,,come on now, put Martys quote on there too..”This one belongs to the REDS…just like Joe did, That one BELONGS TO THE REDS!
Just went to vote for Nuxhall and, wow, what a pain in the ass. Do they need any more information about me?
