Matt Belisle vs. Oliver Perez tonight as the Reds seek to beat the Metropolitans and end a four-game losing streak. Seems like Oliver Perez has had some success against the Reds, but my memory may be tainted since I saw Perez toss a one-hitter at Cincinnati a couple of years ago when he was still with Pittsburgh.
Discuss the game here…will it be Joey Votto’s major league debut? I agree with Jeff; they need to let Votto play every day.

Not Oliver Perez!!!

Welcome. Joey Votto. Take a seat on the bench.
Hey, it’s a lefty on the mound – Votto gets a day of leeway to make sure the Stowes got his name spelled right on his uniform and everything. Maybe he’ll pinch-hit for his first appearance, like Hamilton did.
I hope there is a Perez killer in this line-up.
To echo what Thom B was talking about Griffey, his slugging numbers have dropped the 2nd half of the season. More than likely it has been fatigue since he hasn’t played in this many games since 2000.
I would have bet a hundred bucks that Mackanin would start freaking Jorge Cantu instead of Votto.
Frankly, I don’t care about the lefty/righty matchups at this point. Votto is going to be playing against lefties and righties, if he ends up being as good as advertised. Why not let him play against lefties this month, when an 0-4 isn’t going to hurt this crappy team any? He has to get experience against lefties at some point.
Crap, LoDuca ruins my enjoyment of a good interview with a VERY excited Joey Votto by hitting a homer.
I can’t wait to see Votto get some action!!
Votto, Bruce, Dunn, Hamilton, Junior, Phillips – The Jack-It-Out Crew!!
Maybe Votto should be pitching!
Votto, Bruce, Dunn, Hamilton, Junior, Phillips…
…and Bailey and Cueto on the mound.
Maybe we do have some reason to pay attention in the future. Although I fully expect Dunn to be wearing another team’s uniform next year.
Bad D by JK
I know Ross’s defensive metrics aren’t outstanding, but he seems to throw out a ton of runners and play really outstanding defense … to my untrained eye.
Ross gives us reason to hate him less
I really thought Valentin had played himself into a regular position during Ross’ absence.
I really hate Oliver Perez. He might be the LH starter on my All-Star Kills-the-Reds team.
Before he joined the Reds, who woulda guessed that Valentin would be the best hitting catcher on any team?
We’re a game and a half outta last place. Not good at all.
In 83.2 career innings versus the Reds, Perez has 105 strikeouts. Ouch. However, he’s also allowed 14 homers, which accounts for the 3.98 ERA vs. Cincinnati in his career.
3.98 runs will give us the lead.
Will the media shut up about Appalachian State upset of Michigan! It’s not like AP was a lousy team. What a bunch of media hype and I actually hate Michigan.
Is that the longest hit of Hopper’s career?
Norris Hopper with a double. Hopper is the greatest player in the history of mankind.
Could Hopper be the promised one, the long awaited Perez killer?
Dare to dream, Jim….
One down, 2 point nine-eight to go.
Is one of the attributes for that Heart & Hustle Award include being psycho?
Hopper would have had a triple out of that ball Delgado hit!
Seven pitchers on the Reds have a higher batting average than Jason Ellison.
Jason Ellison is the greatest player in the history of mankind.
I’m just itching here waiting to see if Votto is going to hit. I can’t believe I’m still interested in anything about this season!
I’m with you all…I positively hate Oliver Perez.
Junior walks to lead off the fourth. Let’s get a rally going here.
BP is up now.
Can Dunn hit the big 2.98 HR?
Not watching the game. Why is Jason Ellison’s name being thrown around? Is Mackanin saving 8 pinch-hitters for the 8th & 9th again?
Hey Chad, I’ll stop being condescending when you stop being the cynic. This front-office isn’t responsible for eight straight years of losing, and they cannot realistically right the ship in two years.
As far as the promotions – I’d agree if these kids weren’t performing after they’re promoted. But, in many cases they are, and that’s encouraging.
I’m a Reds fan, not a Yankee fan. Have been since the 60’s. Therefore I’m not going to constantly be critical when this organization takes some time to rebuild.
Marge and Bowden tore it down, not Krivsky. It’s being built from the bottom-up as it should be, so be patient.
Just talking Ellison just because he is a stud ballplayer.
Adam Dunn is not clutch.
3-2.
Good job Adam Dunn. Halfway to a lead.
Dunner!
Cantu just misses!!!
Hey, an appearance by Tommy Helms. Nice to see. He looks younger than I thought he would. Looks exactly like he did in 1989, if I remember correctly.
I can barely look at Cantu…but if he produces, he’s fine by me.
Helms – forever the lush!
I missed most of the interview with him…if any of you heard it, what has Helms been up to since he left the Reds in ‘89?
Okay, Reds have tied it. Can Ballissle keep us in the game?
Don’t hold your breath, Ben.
Sounds like he has been up to drinking, smoking, golfing, and having heart surgery.
Not necessarily in that order.
Well, a good fifth inning by Belisle. How many pitches has he thrown?
Hopper for NL MVP!!!!
That was a shot by Keppy!!!
Did that ball of Junior’s die or what?
Belisle has 89 pitches through 5. But he had a 1-2-3 inning in the fifth, he’ll probably be out there to start the 6th.
I walk out of the room for a minute and I miss some scoring. I need to leave again.
Phillips – 4 HR, 3 SB away from the 30 – 30 Club.
i hope BP gets it.
Tonight, preferably.
Another SMART play by Phillips – sees no one covering second with the big shift, and takes off for second base on Perez’s first move.
I still think that 2 SB on one play down in Washington was the most amazing thing I’ve seen all year.
Ben Jukich has thrown 6 no hit innings for Sarasota in the first game of their playoff series with Clearwater. They’re up 2-0.
This is about the point when Belisle hits the wall, though. I’d send him out for the sixth, but I’d be watching him very closely.
I agree about that 2SB play. Unreal.
Cantu needs to sign a long term deal and get some facial surgery. Or he could go the Hank Williams, Jr. route and grow a beard.
Walk for cantu, bases loaded now.
Jukich has had a good year. HOw good is he, as a prospect?
Coming into tonight, Perez had also walked 40 Reds in 83.2 innings. Probably should have mentioned that earlier.
Oh well, Gonzo does what he does best: he makes the third out.
Yeah, Perez can have trouble with the strike zone. He has talent, though.
Hey Jim…did you hear about Appalachian State?
Jukich is 24 (be 25 later this month) and still pitching A ball…so…but he did pitch well since coming to the Reds. I’d have expected him to be moved to AA at some point during the second half though…
Sorry Jim, it’s a huge story. Never has a team from AA beat a ranked team. A friend of mine who is a big time Michigan fan said he’d have fired Carr before he got off the field.
Wow, 24 is young for A-ball. But then, the Reds are hit and miss when it comes to promoting guys. Never seems like they know what they are doing.
farmersonly.com still cracks me up!!!
The personal ads have to be hilarious!
No, 24 isn’t young for A ball for a prospect…
I agree, it’s huge…but Appy State is a VERY good team for that level.
What I hate about it, as a Virginia alum, is that everyone keeps mentioning UVa’s basketball loss to Chaminade in 1982 as a similar type upset. As bad as UVa football is right now, I don’t even want to think about the University during this time of the year.
And there goes the lead. Crap.
That farmers only site isn’t real, is it? And why are you checking it out?
I would have fired Carr at the end of last season after yet another OSU loss and another bowl loss.
Carr is a dead man walking at this point, I would guess.
O, Matt Belisle. How you vex us.
It is real. I checked it out because of the commercial during the Reds games. Shows how desperate the Reds are for ad bucks. Used car sales can’t be far off.
Yes, I’m vexed. But he’s still young, and I still think he can be a good #3 starter.
He’s vexing, though.
I haven’t heard that ad. Funny.
Used car sales? Selig would approve.
This bites!
Belisle doesn’t just vex me, he makes me vomit.
Well, that lead was fun while it lasted.
Ugly. Bray not the answer today.
I just flipped it over to the US Open tennis. Serena Williams is probably my favorite women’s tennis player, but her mom scares me. She made me cry.
I wonder if on farmersonly.com, if they allow people to limit profile searches to specific livestock or crops that the farmer raises/grows – such as pig farmer, for pig farmer
I’m glad you could admit that, Ben.
I prefer Sharapova.
I wonder if you can search on farmersonly.com for sheep, or if it is limited to humans?
I’m ready for some hot Votto action.
Can you get that on farmersonly.com?
Tennis fans here? I’m looking forward to Roddick versus Federer tomorrow.
As usual, Majewski comes right in and puts out the fire.
Mota’s got an ERA of 6.
Votto!
Hmmm. Swinging K, nothing but offspeed breaking stuff.
Mackanin just can’t stop himself. Here comes Guardado.
Jeff Brantley: “Tell you what, Reds have a 3.5 million dollar option on Guardado next year, and if he can throw 87, 88 like he’s doing here? I’ll take it.”
Brantley is nuts
I hope Eric Milton signs with a NL team next year so we can see if Norris Hopper can even homer off of him.
In scientific terms I would characterize a Hopper versus Milton matchup as a stoppable force meets a movable object.
That is a beautiful statement, Jim.
Don’t call it a comeback – 8-6 now. Single, single, single.
How do you spell frustrating? REDS.
Gonzo unselfishing walks in order to allow Ross the opportunity to make the third out.
But Mackanin robs hims of the chance by pinch hitting LLM.
JavaMan, we missed you.
First and third with no outs. I didn’t miss him that much.
Has LaDuca ever had a 2 HR night before?
This bullpen is one beat puppy.
If Mackanin ever had s shot of being this team’s manager it is rapidly disappearing.
Can Tom Shearn give the Reds a half decent performance tomorrow?
Why do we watch this?
