It’s the Labor Day edition of the game thread, and the Mets are celebrating by sending Pedro Martinez to the mound to make his first start of the season. The Reds will counter with ace Aaron Harang, so it should be an interesting afternoon tilt.
Discuss it here….

Boy, a win against Pedro would be nice.
4-3 Mets in the 6th. Harang continues to be good except for the homeruns – 2 allowed to this point.
Soon as I say it, though, Harang gives up doubles and singles to the tune of two more runs, 6-3 Mets, and he is relieved by Majewski. Not a good prognosis for Harang’s 15th win.
Schoeneweis not exactly enjoying a Ryan Franklinesque career rejuvenation after leaving the Reds last winter. 5.11 ERA coming in.
Ah, Jason Ellison. 1 for 19 as a Red. He better be polishing up his resume.
Elizardo threw five innings in Louisville today, gave up 2 runs and struck out 8. And he’s off the 40-man roster.
“Find ways to win,” says Mackanin. Easy to say for him, when he puts Ellison at the plate in any capacity.
As soon as I tuned in this game just fell apart. 8-3 now.
Although I completely disagree, I can see why they may hypothetically have no wanted to promote Vottom and instead play Hatteberg against righties. Krivsky may have been focusing on winning games now in response to pressure from Castelini and his “win now” mentality. His job may be on the line and simply felt that Hatteberg gave the Reds a better chance to win over Votto. Again, I disagree with his thinking, but I can at least see some rationale behind it.
On the other hand – playing Jason Ellison is beyond ridiculous! He is terrible and almost 30, so not likely to get any better. What am I missing here?
Yea not one of thra reds best games. They started off good, taking the 2-0 lead, but in the later innings, they struggled. Hopefully they will win the next two
From CTR:
“There’s a lot of game left. You’re talking about the sixth inning. I don’t want to use my better pinch hitters in my estimation that early in the ball game, especially with two outs. It’s tough to come up with a two-out hit. If Jason comes up with a two-out hit, that’s a bonus. To me, that’s too early to use my best. Especially since they have (Pedro) Feliciano, they’ve got (Scott) Schoeneweis, another kid (Willie Collazo) and their closer (Billy Wagner) is left-handed. So I might have needed all three of them to win a game.”
Per my post from Friday, McK seems to be turning slowly into Bob Boone. Overthinking and overtinkering. Time to start the search.
