Game Thread: Reds at Pirates — 2007.08.30

Matt Belisle vs. Matt Morris in the wrap-up of this four-game series with the Pirates. Enjoy the game…

…but before the game, I thought I would honor Jared Burton (who is in the Reds bullpen), Marcus McBeth (who should be in the Reds bullpen), and the immortal Dooley Womack (read Ball Four if you don’t know who Womack is), all of whom were born in the great state of South Carolina. As a tribute, enjoy this video of Miss South Carolina from the Miss Teen USA 2007 pageant. My thoughts are below the fold:

Miss Teen USA 2007 – South Carolina Answers A QuestionThe best bloopers are a click away

Thoughts: “What you’ve just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.”

STL has already lost to the Astros today.

Right now the Reds sit in about the same spot as they did before the doubleheader that seems to have knocked the wind out of everyone’s sails. 7 games back. Cubs have Ted Lilly against the Brewers tonight.

  • Yeah, DA, they are almost in the same place, but that’s not good enough. It is 3 days later and they have gone backward. At this late date, that isn’t gonna cut it.

OPTIMISM, Chad! Can’t dwell on what already has been.

Hmmm. Dunner on defense is not pretty. Still, one runner cut down at the plate. 1-0 Pirates.

  • DevilsAdvocate

Two singles and nothing else doing in the 2nd. Hopefully this won’t be more of the same – leaving 12 runners on or something like Tuesday.

  • EE up with bases loaded and two outs.

Edwin is da man. No suspense, 2-1 Reds.

    Wait a second.

    ReplyReply
  • Awesome. I was about to go in the other room to watch football but figured I’d watch the rest of this inning first and EE makes me happy.

..and now this appeal confuses me. They say Dunn missed third, and without any review the ump says yep, he did. Why didn’t he make the call before?

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Dunn called out for missing the third base bag. Tie game instead. Someone watching the game, what does the video show?

    ReplyReply
  • They’re saying there is no good camera angle to show whether or not he touched the bag. “All you can see is the dirt kicking up around the bag.”

Mackanin still out arguing the call.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

The ump only makes that out call if the team actually makes the play, i.e. throws over to the base and tags it.

    ReplyReply
  • Paolino was standing in the way of the only camera that was on 3rd at the time. I’d guess he touched it but that could be wishful thinking and the ump was looking right at it.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

The Brennamen making the point that the 3rd base coach Mark Berry didn’t argue the call at all.

    ReplyReply
  • Haha, and the one time the camera is on the home plate ump Wally Bell, he makes a fool out of himself tumbling out of the Reds dugout.

  • DevilsAdvocate

You’ve got to be kidding. No runs?

    ReplyReply
  • james

What is going on? This crew has there heads you know where.

    ReplyReply
  • Alright, with NO RUNS I’ll be heading in to the living room to watch the tough guys’ sport.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

I want the Reds to score 20 runs next inning, with Dunn hitting two grandslams. That is awful.

    ReplyReply
  • RedRedMan

How are there no runs? Did the Bucs throw over to third before Griffey crossed the plate?

    ReplyReply
  • I don’t see how the no runs can stand.

    ReplyReply
  • renbutler

    Dunn was forced at third.

    ReplyReply
  • Griffey was definately in, period. I’m back on the laptop watching two games at once now.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

They are calling the out on Dunn a force out. On a force out to end an inning, no runs can score.

    ReplyReply
  • renbutler

I can’t believe it took the announcers that long to figure this out.

Anyway, I’ve never seen anyone, except maybe a pitcher, throw away an entire game by himself, but we might be seeing it right now.

    ReplyReply
  • Yeesh. What a rotten play. EE won’t even get credit for the hit.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

That’s about right, renbutler. This is just an unbelievable series of events.

  • renbutler

On Gameday, Edwin is credited with a hit. That I don’t understand.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

On the plus side, it didn’t rattle the New Belisle at all. he keeps on rolling.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

The gameday in real time sometimes doesn’t revise the official scoring until much, much later, if at all.

    ReplyReply
  • RedRedMan

Ah, didn’t realize the force play.

    7.12
Unless two are out, the status of a following runner is not affected by a preceding runner’s failure to touch or retouch a base. If, upon appeal, the preceding runner is the third out, no runners following him shall score. If such third out is the result of a force play, neither preceding nor following runners shall score.

You know how when a first baseman makes an error on a missed catch, the guy who made the throw is credited with an assist? If there was any justice that’s what would happen to Edwin’s stat line.

    ReplyReply
  • RedRedMan

So what would that score as? A 7-5-1-5 force out?

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

    Solid research by RedRedMan.

Reds at bat look like they’ve got places to be, and Mackanin’s long conversation with the umps put them behind schedule.

Unbelievable. Chalk up another one for Dumb Dunn

    ReplyReply
  • You’re saying Hopper wouldnt have made that mistake? Probably not. Better make the switch.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Dunn “makes the catch, and a fine catch it is, a running catch to save a run.” I think Marty is making an effort to tone it down relative to Adam Dunn. Very little piling on lately.

    ReplyReply
  • renbutler

All right, Dunner. Here’s your chance to make it up.

    ReplyReply
  • renbutler

Dunn walks. Maybe we should pinch run for him…

Is this the Good Majecian tonight, or the Bad Majecian? We’ll soon find out.

    ReplyReply
  • Thundering Reds

And the Reds should be leading 5 – 2 or more right now. And why isn’t Keppinger playing? The whole team seams to play better when he is in there. I wonder how good he is in left????

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

We saw Keppinger in LF once already, and once in right during the Tuesday doubleheader.

For what it’s worth, which is not much, the Reds lost both those games.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Also, the gamecast has finally gotten up to date on Edwin’s line. The Reds just went from 10 hits total to 9.

Majewski was so “Good” that he gets a go at a second inning pitched.

    ReplyReply
  • Thundering Reds

I’m glad to see that Majewski is rebounding. If we had better relief in the first half of the season the Reds could be in 1st place right now.
Has everyone else turned on something else after the terrible 4th inning?

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

It’s too heartbreaking to think back on all the games that the Reds could have and should have won but didn’t, thanks to the pen.

That was then, this is now. [grunt] Majewski, Bray, and Burton strong!

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

From the way Marty sounded while calling that play, Javier might have been involved in a collision had the ball not been cut off in the effort to catch Edwin. LLM is a sssssslllllloooooowwwwww runner, and I’d trade that play for the out on Edwin.

Of course, he might have been safe no matter what. I’m not watching, after all.

What a bizarre game tonight! But that’s the difference between these Reds and the ones earlier in the season–they fight to the end now.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Reds win 5-4! That must have been some play – the Brennamen are basically saying that it was a play that could win him the Gold Glove. Can’t wait to see the highlight clip.

Great play by Phillips of course, but great work by Valentin too!

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

I had a post all typed up about the Reds’ run-scoring efforts in the series, but I can’t post that minor negativity now. Maybe later. Right now is all about the win!

    ReplyReply
  • Just a few random thoughts about tonights game:

    1. I wouldn’t have pinch-hit Keppinger for Hatteburg. I think that was questionable, regardless of the outcome.

    2. With Valentine on second, I would have used Ellison to pinch run. I believe that had that occured, their would have been no throw to cut off and Edwin would have held up safely at first and the inning continues.

    3. Stupid baserunning mistakes several times tonight.

    4. We left ten runners on base again tonight. This is almost an epidemic.

    5. Majeski is looking like the pitcher he was in Washington.

    6. Ken Griffey Jr is one of the greatest players of his generation and can be cut lots and lots of slack. He still should have been on second base when Gonzo went home.

    7. Nice hustle by Junior going into third.

    8. Gonzo made a heck of a slide at home plate. Watch it again if you have the chance. (The ’small ball’ guy in me LOVED it)

    9. Brandon Phillips- WOW.

    10. Javy made a great play on the receiving end of Brandon’s throw.

    11. I’m kinda tired of the Newbies getting lost in the taste.

    ReplyReply
  • Brandon Phillips better win the gold glove at 2B this year. With all due respect to Chase Utley, who I think is actually better defensively, you didn’t play for a month.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Without their customary power hitting, the Reds offense was just not good in this series. And it sounds stupid to say that after they averaged 4.75 runs per game in the 4 games, but nevertheless.

    Tuesday early: 13h+2bb = 4 runs
    Tuesday later: 12h+3bb = 2 runs
    Wednesday: 15h+2bb = 8 runs
    Thursday: 15h+4bb = 5 runs

That’s quite an unenviable baserunner:runs ratio in every game.

Of course, doug, then there’s Rafael Palmeiro who didn’t play defense for a year and still won the gold glove. It’s not an award with a history of logic.

    ReplyReply
  • DA, you must not get the Reds on TV. Then you, too, would be lost in the taste of Gold Star Chili.

    ReplyReply
  • RedRedMan

DA …not to mention Jeter with three gold gloves.

As far as defense metrics go, there’s almost no discernible difference between Utley and Phillips at second. Offense on the other hand…
