  • Congrats to Davey. Was also a favorite of mine back from the ‘machine’ days. He deserves all the accolades he can get. Sometimes he was overlooked IMHO and understandably so with Bench, Rose, Morgan, Perez, etc. on the team. But he always made key defensive plays and if I recall correctly had some timely hits in the WS vs the Red Sox.

  • I hear Alex Gonzalez is going to wear #13 in honor of Concepcion tonight. I think that’s a nice way to honor Concepcion, but I also think it’s a terrible idea. No one has worn 13 since Concepcion retired. Why should they break that string to let a SS who couldn’t carry Concepcion’s jock wear it?

There is one heck of a ball team out there tonight with one heck of a manager. Too bad it won’t be the one playing.

    Love ya, Davey!
    Love ya, Big Red Machine!
I feel fortunate to have seen you play

  • Yeah, it’s great to see Bench, Morgan, Perez, Griffey, Foster, and Sparky.

Even in awful years like this one, at least Reds fans can look back on a storied history. Nights like this are fun.

  • Yeah, Jim, let’s suit up that lineup!

  • Wish Barry Larkin could have been there. Hope his #11 is retired soon.

  • Never heard of em, Jim. :)

Davey throws out the first pitch to the man I’d personally like to see as the next manager of the Reds: Johnny Bench.

  • Nice to see the current Reds roster lining up just to shake Davey’s hand.

Oh yeah, there’s a game tonight.

It would have been nice if every SS in baseball wore #13 tonight. Now that would be a tribute!

    Definitely, Jim.

How am I listening to Thom Brennaman on WLW? Wasn’t he in New York today for the Fox game?

Reds have best record in the majors since July 3. Only 8.5 games out now, in fourth place! Hope is eternal!

  • Glad to see Belisle back. He never should have been sent down; he should have just been sent to the pen, IMO.

    Sweet. Nice beginning for Belisle.

  • Wouldn’t it be funny if, after all this time, Jeff Keppinger broke the hit streak record?

I have to say, I like Mitre a lot better since that incident where he confronted his teammate Scott Olsen over poor treatment of a clubhouse attendant.

That said, I hope the Reds beat him silly.

  • Strike 2 to Dunn was a pretty bad call

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

And a fine start for the Reds. 1-0 after 1.

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy James

That Scott Olsen guy is a jerk, evidently.

  • Smart play by EE there. Apparantly he’s calmed down and isn’t throwing it away going to first anymore.

    ReplyReply
  • No defensive splits on baseball-reference.com apparantly..? Too bad, I’d like to see EE’s E’s before and after the All-Star break.

Griffey comes through. 4-0 after 2.

Belisle looks sharp early. 5 K’s on the first trip through the Marlins batting order.

    ReplyReply
  • DA, I kept wanting to say that but was afraid I’d say it too soon. His stuff looks great and I think Florida has done as much with it as they possibly could so far.

Well, as soon as I said it Hanley hit a double in the gap, and now Uggla is putting up a big fight…to earn a walk. So I’ll just shut up about how well things are going.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

But things are going well.

    ReplyReply
  • Yeah, I’m very happy with Belisle’s performance thus far. Through four, he’s been mostly very good.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Belisle has 76 pitches thrown through 4 innings. Seems like that’s often been an issue for him – lots of pitches thrown, too many to get very deep into a ballgame. Or am I confusing him with Claussen, who had the same difficulty?

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

    Big night for Griffey! 6-0.

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy James

No, DA, Belisle and Claussen were both similarly afflicted.

    7-0 now, maybe we’ll win 13-0!

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

How about 13-1? Hermida with a solo shot.

Brennaman grandkids are in the booth. After several interruptions from the little one, Thom quips, “In case you at home were wondering, yes: we do run a daycare outfit here in the radio booth.”

6 innings, 9 strikeouts, 97 pitches for Belisle.

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

Well, the ump sure blew that out call on Bellisle!

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

A quick 7-pitch inning is just what the doctor ordered for Belisle. Makes it through 7 innings.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

    Boom, Adam Dunn. 10-1.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Tough outing for Byung Hyun-Kim, is suffering from a ridiculously small strikezone that the ump is calling for the submariner. There were about 5 pitches to Phillips and Hatteberg that the gameday located squarely within the strikezone, which were called balls.

On the other hand, the Reds aren’t doing their damage this inning with walks. Swinging for power, they are.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

You’d figure that the right-handed hitters would have trouble against Kim, but they’re 2-2 with a walk in this inning.

Belisle bats for himself. Why bother? Put Stanton in there to get him his allotted work in for the week, so they’re not tempted – again – to put him into an actually important situation.

  • DevilsAdvocate

I wonder if Gonzalez will even get into this game to show off the #13 on his back, for the last time.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Guess I saw that one coming before Mackanin did: after a homer and two singles without Belisle retiring a batter in the eighth, in comes Stanton.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

And Stanton is the wrong guy to use with inherited runners. Can’t retire a batter, and unfortunately Belisle ends up being charged with 4 runs instead of 2.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

    Yikes. Saarloos allows a first-batter homer. 6-run inning, 11-7.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Stanton’s ERA now heads well north of 6, thanks to those two runs credited to his pitching line.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

So I guess it has to be Gosling getting the start tomorrow? Saarloos was just used tonight, Santos pitched in the minors on Wednesday, and Bailey is on a rehab assignment tonight (and incidentally got rocked in low-A Sarasota for 6 runs on 8 hits & 2 walks in 3 innings).

Just to break up the DA solo show … I am pissed about batting Belisle and sending him out again against the 2-3-4 batters. Why? So he could maybe get three outs. Why not get Ellison an at bat, bring in someone at the start of an inning. Now he has pissed away half the bullpen, including Burton, Weathers. Maybe you have to know how to WIN a blowout also.

    ReplyReply
  • Justin

Weathers in to slam the door on Marlin rally. Reds win and reduce the differnce to 500 to 11 games!

    11-7 final. That’s 5 consecutive wins.

I know I am being greedy with birthday demands. Win vs Braves and Harang 13 win. Can I have for a late present DFA of Mike Stanton.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Thank you Jeff, Justin – being alone on stage is no fun. Join in early and often!

I agree with you at #49, by the way. Though I would have used Gonzalez instead of Ellison.

I think Saarloos got the relatively quick hook so that he can still sort of be the shadow starter tomorrow, because whoever gets the call tomorrow is probably not going to go very far innings-wise.

    ReplyReply
  • Jeff

Gonzalez is the right call, he probably should have made an appearance on the field, assuming you like the idea of wearing 13.

Tom Shearn called up to start, know the name but not the numbers, hopefully people who have wanted everyone from Louisville to get a shot are happy. Who goes out?, guess it can’t be Belisle because he has to stay around to fill out the starting staff.

Adam Dunn is on pace for 45 HR’s and 114 RBI’s. Would somebody please explain to me how this could possibly, under any circumstances, be construed as “not good”?

  • Thundering Reds

Does anyone know why Pete and Geronimo didn’t make it tonight? I can guess that maybe MLB wouldn’t let Pete on the field, which is rotten. Would also have liked to see Gullet and some of the pitchers from the Best Team Ever.

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

Tom Shearn on the mound tomorrow.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

Wow. Out of left field, that choice. Maybe Shearn can do to the Marlins what every debuting starter does to the Reds.

Last week, the Louisville Bats radio team featured Tom Shearn as the color commentator for two games against the Durham Bulls. He did a pretty good job. He also made a comment about hoping to get the chance to pitch for the Reds at the end of this season, and looks like he’s getting his shot.

Even though he was probably chosen in part because Sunday falls on his normal turn in the rotation, I’m still surprised at the choice. He’s not even on the 40-man roster, which means that somebody has to get dropped to make room for him on both the 40-man and the 25-man active roster. For the 40-man move I can see a DFA of say, Santos, or more likely a move of either Pedro Lopez or Ryan Freel from the 15-day to the 60-day DL (which puts them in limbo off the 40-man). But what of the active roster? Option Ellison (does he have options?) Send Coffey back down without using him in a game? Release Stanton?

All will be revealed tomorrow, I suppose.

What? What’s this? Are the Reds 7½ games out, which was the same figure that caused everyone to sit up and take notice of the Cardinals a couple weeks ago?

I’ve added another prerequisite in my mind for an automatic hire of Mackanin this winter: Finish ahead of St. Louis.

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

I agree. Simply playing “better” isn’t enough.

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

Finishing ahead of the Cardinals may equal winning the division since it appears that the Cubs and Brewers have their hands firmly wrapped around their necks.
