The final game of this four game series with the Braves is tonight, with Elizardo Ramirez taking on former-Red Buddy Carlyle. Carlyle hasn’t had a bad season, but I can’t believe he’s just 29 years old. I thought he’d be forty by now.
Discuss it here.

Lizard Man give me a good Birthday please.
Happy birthday Justin! Elizardo will oblige you I’m sure.
Yowza. 99 degrees gametime temperature. Echhh.
Elizardo doesn’t have much of a changeup early – fastball is sitting at 89-90, and change is 84-85. Prefer to see more like a 10mph difference, at least.
Cincinnati Reds
Hamilton, cf
Keppinger, ss
Griffey Jr., rf
Phillips, 2b
Dunn, lf
Hatteberg, 1b
Valentín, c
Encarnacíon, 3b
Ramirez, p
The Reds are flashing some serious defensive smarts & instincts in the early going. That Keppinger -> Encarnacíon fielder’s choice in the first was quality, and now Javy turns a little pop-foul bunt into a doubleplay.
Is McCann unable to catch a throw to the plate or what?
RBI double, tie game. Hatteberg is a Great American world-beater.
Edwin comes through – only drawback is that it bounced out and held a runner at third. 2-1 Reds.
I always think it’s interesting when a player doesn’t hit ‘em as he throws ‘em. Especially pitchers – Elizardo throws right and bats left.
Just as I was afraid Hamilton was starting to slump, a 3 run homer.
EXCELLENT. Elizardo “steals” second, as Encarnacíon shows off baserunning smarts and gets back to thrid safely. And then Hamilton knocks it out of the park. Wow.
5-1 Reds. This is wonderful.
Everybody looks like an All-Star at everything in the early going.
Why was Bobby Cox ejected? Was he mad at an ump or just making a spectacle of himself by being mad at his team for fouling up that pickoff play?
I think he was arguing what looked like strike 3 to Thin Lizzy.
After the first, Elizardo seems to have mostly abandoned the changeup as the complement to the fastball, in favor of the curveball.
The Advanced Gameday is a great thing.
Ok, apparantly Carlyle complained about a pitch to Hamilton and Cox came out after the fact to whine. Are you watching the game? It’s on Fox Sports South here.
..and if Gameday is even close, it was a pretty bad call.
Yeah, I didn’t even notice that pitch. Looks like it was about as bad as that walkoff walk, ball 4 call to Kouzmanoff out in San Diego a couple months ago.
I’m not watching the game. I get all Red Sox, all the time in these parts.
Ah.. its all Atlanta here.
EE with a brainfart throwing to 2nd with 2 out. I’d imagine he’s going to be catching hell from Phillips for half an inning.
Lizard not throwing a lot of 1st pitch strikes tonight.. and not a lot of 2nd or 3rd pitch strikes, either.
Settle down Elizardo! 4 walks now. No activity in the bullpen, apparently.
Shazzbot, C. Jones. I hate that guy.
Seems like Keppinger is behind in the count in every single at-bat. And yet he’s hitting .380. Amazing.
And just like that, Griffey & Keppinger team up with doubles and lead 6-5.
yay keppingriffey.
or griffenger.
This is the part of managing that I do not understand. Majewski has been pitching like his arm was reborn. The Braves dribbled two infield hits and Mackanin comes to take him out?
I like Griffenger. Sounds like something that belongs at a Renaissance Faire.
Majewski gives up two infield singles – as Marty said, good pitches but had tough luck – and is out in favor of . . . uh-oh. Justify our love, Stanton.
Lets see how many coaches we can get thrown out for arguing balls and strikes.
Good play by Stanton for the DP
Ha ha! Go Stanton. Catch whatever has infected the rest of the bullpen.
Majewski ERA at 9.24 and in line for the win. Believe it or not it would be his 2nd as a Red. He somehow won one last year.
Maybe the bullpen is taking some sandpaper out to the mound with them.
Thou hast gashed me with thy Griffenger?
Thanks, Stanton.
Why didn’t Hamilton make the throw on that play?
They said he bobbled it. I was wondering the same thing.
Edwin on defense and offense here in the seventh. 7-all.
Cantu has looked locked-in at the plate since he came to the organization in trade. Way to work the walk there, where patience is historically his weakness.
It was a shaky-at-bast start by Elizardo – who to be fair started the year as about the #9 starter – and Stanton looked like Stanton, but at the plate and with the glove the Reds have looked like a playoff team tonight.
i love tonights lineup.
but i prefer cantu at 3rd over eddy
Wow, Cantu over EE? After the play he made and the homerun?
They just showed Guardado’s ERA on FSS. I’ll pretend I didn’t see it.
Not a good night to pick Cantu over Edwin, what with the multiple Gold Glove plays he’s turned in together with two big RBI hits, one a homer, a walk, and 2 runs scored. But it’s a preference.
Guardado? In a tie game in the ninth, to face the middle of the Braves order? Really?
And with the strikeout! Lets give him a win?!
What the hell. The Reds are a team of destiny if Guardado can, for whatever reason, be called upon in a tie game, and somehow do that to Jones and Teixeira.
They all play shallow for Hopper. Costs him a hit there.
Hamilton – Can they drive him in with the game winner?
That play by Chipper saved the game
Kirck Saarloos! Well, well, well. Like old times. Hopefully not too much though – maybe he’ll actually retire a batter here.
Go Griffey! More awesome defense to somehow hold McCann to a single.
We’ve seen quite a few double plays tonight. And without Castro!
A doubleplay! Ends a streak of 11 straight batters to reach base off Saarloos dating back to the end of July before he was demoted.
Weathers and Gosling are the only two left in the bullpen… The Reds need to win it this inning I think!
Jr, Phillips, & Dunn due up in the 10th now… Time to win it Reds!
Atlanta has lefties at the top of the order – they could survive a little longer by using Gosling against them.
But point is well taken. Don’t want to have to go much longer.
Corky Miller! There’s a blast from the past.
…and for those still holding out playoff hopes, going into today the Reds’ magic number was 47 for the division (with 36 games left, counting tonights)
Onto the 11th – so much for the “big bats” of Griffey, Phillips, and Dunn…sheesh
Saarloos pitches two consecutive scoreless innings, with extra-inning pressure. Are you kidding me? Someone clue in the Braves that this is destiny, and resistance is futile!
I love Javy.
Yates throwing some gas at 97mph. Looks like he’s a one-pitch pitcher, though – all his 9 pitches have been fastballs.
And Hatteberg and Valentín time those fastballs well. Walkoff for Encarnacíon?
If you can’t win it right here, you don’t deserve to win at all.
That was about as clear a piece of evidence as I’ve seen that Marty & Jeff are right, and that Edwin doesn’t have any kind of plan when he comes to the plate. You have to think about what they’re trying to do, then figure out what to do about it.
Now Ellison fails miserably as well. They can’t blow this, can they?
If you can’t win it right here, you don’t deserve to win at all.
Whao #63. Marty just jinxed you!
Make ‘em pay, Jeff.
Could it be — yet another huge RBI for Keppinger?
EdE fails miserably. He walked off, to the dugout….
Gameday shows that Ball 1 was clearly a strike
Bobby Cox would be mad about that ball 1 call if he hadn’t been ejected for arguing balls & strikes.
The crowd made a lot of weird noises on strike 2 to Kep.
Yikes. Gameday is probably going to show strike 3 was pretty low.
…and apparently I’m wrong.
Keppinger hasn’t had many huge RBIs – his specialty has been getting on base for everyone else.
Ouch.
Gosling to face three right-handed hitters. Get ready.
Now Reds just got the benefit of a huge strike zone on Strike 1.
Corky Miller’s MLB photo – looks like he ate the guy whose roster spot he took.
When Guardado pitches a scoreless inning, when Saarloos throws two scoreless innings, and when Gosling retires three straight righthanders in a perfect inning . . . destiny! I’m telling you! Attention must be paid!
Bob Wickman’s MLB photo – looks like he ate Corky Miller.
Ballgame!
And Dunn wins it. Did anyone notice Littleton got a SAVE in the 30-3 Texas-Baltimore game last night?
Adam Dunn. Forget all about the 0-5 ineptitude, it’s a walkoff.
I saw that, Jared. Long live the 3-inning automatic save!
Gived Dunn enough chances and BOOM!
How do you get a save in a 30-3 games?
Loved it. Thom tries bashing Dunn about only getting 1 ball out of the infield tonight and they should start Phillips and then Dunn just crushes one. Loved it.
No one is going to like it because of past hirings, but Mackanin is making about as good a case as an interim manager can make to become permanent.
Ohhh! Three innings of relief work. When is the last time that rule had an effect?
I’m still not sold on Mackanin.
If the manager gets fired when the team loses, then he should get some credit when they win, too. The team needs more pitching than a boost in the
“managerial gravitas” anyway.
If Mackanin’s Reds win the division, or even if they’re still in it on the final weekend, then sign him long-term. Short of that, start the search.
Great win. Felt good about that from the beginning. Amazing what a reasonably solid bullpen can do with regard to fans’ optimism.
Thanks Devil for the birthday wishes. Now to be greedy and want 13 wins from Harangatang. Got it!!
