Louisville 12 – Charlotte 9

The teams combined for a whopping 31 hits in this game, and Joey Votto contributed a lot of them. Joey went 3-5 with 2 home runs and 4 runs batted in. The 2 homeruns bring Votto’s total to 19 on the season. Chris Dickerson went 3-6 in the game, belting a solo home run and scoring twice. Jorge Cantu added a 3 run homer in his only hit on the night and scored twice. Ryan Hanigan and Paul Janish each had 2 hits on the night, with Janish driving in 2.

Not much on the positive side to mention for the pitching in this one other than Marcus McBeth pitched a scoreless 9th to record his 8th save for Louisville.

Tennessee 2 – Chattanooga 1

Adam Rosales went 3-4 with a double and an rbi. Shaun Cumberland added 2 hits in 3 at-bats, with a double, run scored, and a walk.

Matt Maloney pitched well enough to get the win but received no offensive support. Maloney went 7 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits while striking out 11. In 4 starts with the Lookouts, Matt has gone 28 innings and struck out 39 batters. He had 115 Ks in 125.2 innings pitched with the Phillies organization.

Sarasota 4 – Clearwater 3 (final 12)

Eric Eymann went 3-6 with a run scored and an rbi. Gerardo Cabrera added 2 rbis and a run scored in a 2-4 night.

Ben Jukich had a nice start, pitching 6 shutout innings, scattering 3 hits and a walk while striking out 7.

Dayton 13 – Great Lakes 8 (final 10)

Billy Rojo went 3-5 with a homer, 3 runs scored, and 3 runs batted in. Drew Stubbs went 4-6 with a home run, 3 runs scored, and an rbi. Juan Francisco went 3-4 with a home run, 2 runs scored, and 4 rbis. Carson Kainer and Jason Louwsma each went 2-6 for the Dragons.

Ramon Geronimo improved to 7-2 in relief by pitching 2 scoreless innings, striking out 1.

Casper 3 – Billings 2

Brandon Menchacha went 2-4 with a double and scored both Mustang runs. Brett Bartles and Michael McKennon each had an rbi.

Two unearned runs cost Enerio Del Rosario a shot at the win. Del Rosario went 6 innings, allowing 3 runs (1 earned), on 6 hits, 1 walk, and 7 strikeouts.

GCL Reds 11 – GCL Pirates 0 (final 7)

In game 1 of the double header, the Reds finally got something going this season. Of course 9 of their runs were scored in 1 inning. Tony Brown and David Scott each had 3 hits and scored 2 runs on the day. Scott drove in 3, and Brown added a double. Jose Bastardo went 2-2 with a run scored and 3 runs batted in.

Tzu-Kai Chiu pitched a dandy, going 6 scoreless innings, scattering 3 hits and striking out 8.

GCL Reds 14 – GCL Pirates 11 (final 7)

Sheesh, what a game. The Reds scored 9 in the 4th inning to take an 11-3 lead, only to have the Pirates score 8 in the 6th inning to tie it back up. The Reds scored 3 in the bottom half of the 6th to take the 14-11 win and give the team back to back wins for only the 4th time this season. Jose Gualdron went 3-4 with a double, 2 runs scored, and 2 rbis. David Scott went 2-4 in game 2, adding a homerun, 3 rbis, and 2 runs scored to his nice night. Jose Bastardo went 2-2 in game 2 as well, with 2 doubles, 2 rbis, and a run scored. Carlos Mendez and Radhames Moreta both went 2-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 runs batted in.

Maloney – 28 IP at Chattanooga, 3 BB, 39 K’s. WOW. I like the look of that!

He’s had more K’s than IP in all 4 of his Chattanooga starts.

So, does this mean that Janish is finally realizing what the job is he is suppose to be doing?? Not impressed by him at all. He hasn’t done great at AA and not sure how the heck he got movied to AAA. He is doing worse up there than he was in AA. He might be a “Big Prospect” but he isn’t playing like one.

When the Lohse trade happened my expectations were to immediately see Maloney disappear into the farm system permanently, and I was still happy to see Lohse go. Let’s see if he stays this good…

Where is our #1 draft pick, Mesacaro? I haven’t see any of his numbers. Is his name not mentioned because he’s that mediocre or has he not started playing yet?

P.S. We have a prospect named Bastardo? What’s that spanish for?

    Worst. Last name. Ever.

I searched a Spanish to English dictionary and Bastardo is english for what you think it is! If you can’t figure it out, then just assume you wouldn’t want that last name.

Of course I don’t see that as being 100% accurate.

Mesoraco is batting .221/.323/.274 in the Gulf Coast League. Has just 1 homerun and 7 rbis in 33 games played and 113 at-bats. Appears to really be struggling right now.

For a guy that doesnt have a power fastball, Matt Maloney gets a ton of strikeouts. I hope we see this guy in a reds uniform sometime next season.

Mesoraco is a high school guy who didn’t play against much other talent in the same echelon as himself. Scouts thought he might need some adjustment time, and looks like that’s correct.

Maloney, while not changing levels when he was traded, did switch leagues – from the Eastern to the Southern League. I haven’t read this about him, but maybe he’s a “trick-pitch” guy. A pitcher who is perceived as able to fool inexperienced hitters with some funky pitch but will get hit hard against either more experienced prospects or by hitters who are familiar with him. (I emphasize perceived.) You know, like closer Carlos Guevara, who also is striking out the world in Chattanooga yet is still stuck at AA with his screwball and his eighty-something-mph fastball. That’s my speculation.

The Reds have a Bastardo, sure, but also a Rojo! How great is that?

  • Never pay attention to first-year pro stats. A high school guy especially is just getting his feet wet.

  • I agree, we’ll know more about Mesoraco next year when he’s at Billings or Dayton.
