The Reds go for the sweep today against formerly-heated rival Los Angeles in an afternoon affair at Great American Ballpark. Rookie Phil Dumatrait takes his 16+ ERA back to the mound for start number two. The Dodgers will counter with former Red Brett Tomko.

Yeesh.. talk about the worst possible first start. Maybe he can get the ERA down to about half that today..
I’ll be watching Chattanooga tonight in Montgomery, and maybe 1 or 2 more times.. Just gotta figure out when Maloney is starting.
I hope the Reds can beat up on Tomko to give Phil some support because he’ll need it.
I just want to see the Reds to get back by less than 10 today.
Give us a report on the Lookouts, Jared. I hope to get up to see them soon, and RN editor Chris W will be watching them in a couple of weeks when they are playing at the Tennessee Smokies.
FIngers crossed for Doomatrait. I’d love to see a good start out of him.
Good thing we traded Lohse
Yeah, it is…
I don’t understand Dunn out of the lineup today. He was off Sunday and Monday…and against a mediocre RHP? He’s got a .950 OPS vs Tomko in his career with 2 homers (only 16 AB).
Gonzalez bounced two off the top of the fence last night, now hits one out.
I agree Bill, i was wondering the same thing dealing with Dunn. Unless there is an unknown injury they are resting a little more.
think dum can go two innings in a row without giving up a run?
All signs point to no…Dumatrait certainly having a lot of trouble throwing strikes.
I’m not watching, just listening. Is anyone watching? Is Dumie’s control as bad as it sounds?
And I want to pile on with respect to the Dunn decision. Unless there is something we don’t know (and there usually is), like an injury, what possible reason could there be for resting him? He’s obviously durable, and he’s had two days off in the last few days.
For any golf fans out there, John Daly is currently leading the PGA Championship in today’s first round. Awesome. Hope he celebrates with a pack of Marlboros and some Doritos right there on the 18th green.
Dumatrait has AA or AAA control. I was kind of thinking that he would have a tough time in the majors, with his walk rate in the minors approaching 5 on occasion. He’s been behind in the count to a lot of batters today, but improving as the game progresses. Three straight shutout innings! And finally a leadoff batter retired!
i’m watching. he’s not missing badly. he just needs to tighten it up a bit.
nice to see him in the sixth inning this time around!
Can Dumatrait give us a couple more ugly innings then we can hope and pray to cross the Valley of the Treacherous 8th Inning unscathed?
How many pitches has Dumatrait thrown?
Valentin made Tomko throw as many pitches as Phillips and Hatteburg combined.
90 pitches with 56 of them strikes…
Eddie Guardado primed to appear?
An offical quality start for Dumatrait. Lived dangerously but successfully. Welcome!
Just saw that the Cardinals just called up Rick Ankiel to play outfield…
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/wire?section=mlb&id=2967382
Game time temp was 100 degrees up to 110 with the heat index. I’d imagine the pitchers might be on lower pitch counts today.
Wow. The Cardinals were, I thought, waiting until September to call up Ankiel so they wouldn’t have to expose him to waivers again if they needed to send him back down. So he should be in the majors the rest of the year.
Guardado coughs up the lead and the opportunity to get Dumatrait his first winning decision. Oh well.
Ankiel coming back to the majors as an outfielder is an extremely impressive accomplishment. Especially given the fact that he was hurt in spring training last year and missed all of 2006.
Now might be as good as any time to have Dunn hit for Guardado.. Pitcher spot isn’t all that likely to come up again
Come on Grif.
Keppinger is 3 for 4 today. He is certainly making a strong push for everyday at bats.
Keppinger has been taking names for the last month.
I hope Beimel is as bad as he is ugly.
He is.
Balk in a run I will take that!
Brian had an interesting post on his blog comparing Keppinger to Chris Stynes…
Very nice. Reds up 4-3. Who’s on to relieve Guardado? Jared Burton, the most effective reliever of all lately.
Burton enters the Valley of the 8th Inning.
Keppinger and Chris Stynes? Hadn’t thought of that – could be very apt.
If you don’t read everything on Brian’s blog, you’re missing some of the best Reds stuff out there, IMO.
Ankiel making it back to the majors is about as unprecedented as Josh Hamilton’s season. I hope he has some success, preferably against the Cubs & Brewers.
Hey, a second Reds reliever gives up the lead. Never seen that before with this team.
Damn, base hit on 0-2 pitch…
At least Burton didn’t give me the same gut wrenching “I knew it was going to happen” feeling. I’m almost relieved that I was disappointed that he gave that up.
I’d have a hard time taking Burton out after just 2/3 for Stanton, lefty or no..
Stanton drives me nuts. Simply nuts.
Whew. Getting out of the eighth inning with the score just tied is actually a huge victory.
Stanton is awesome. Stanton for Mayor!
BP, Hattieberg and Jose to gget a run accross for Weathers.
bad at bat for Hattieberg. That is kinda of deflating.
Wow, is Mack really going to concede the win by leaving Stanton in?
A 1-2-3 inning for Stanton?! Dunn’s gotta bat for Stanton if he’s able.
Tracking Stanton on the advanced gameday, he started the inning by throwing what appear to be four very distinctly different pitches. I’m surprised, since watching him in actuality all his pitches look about the same to me.
Got to figure Gonzo, Dunn, Hopper
Adam Dunn stands on deck. So there you go.
End it, Dunn!
Dunn strikes out, then gets tossed out of the game.
STrikes out on 3 called strikes..that’s horrible…
Dunn losing his patience with the incompetence of MLB umpires.
Anyone watching…how bad were the calls? Has Dunn EVER got tossed before?
Yikes, gotta keep your cool in a close game when your team needs you.
No major shock that Dunn would look at a 3rd strike.
Rare to see Dunn that vocal about balls and strikes, isn’t it? Guess he felt like as a pinch-hitter unlikely to stay in the game, nothing to lose.
Thom pointing out that Dunn uttered no personal insults or curses, yet got tossed just about immediately.
Mr. Hopper sets the table.
Time for some Primt Time Kenny G!
Thom and Marty are having orgasms over Norris Hopper right now, but all they can do is hammer Dunn all day long.
100 degrees = umpire with short fuse?
If Keppinger gets a hit here to score Hopper, Thom’s head might explode from ecstasy.
Opps! Forgot we have Mr. Keppinger in front of Kenny G.
No such luck.
Perhaps to give the team a shot in the arm
Hopper gets the steal, but because the ball came loose. For a speed guy he doesn’t have a good success ratio on steals.
But he and Keppinger have been pretty good today. 6 of the ten Cincinnati hits between them.
Wish that would have fallen in. But oh well on to the 10th!
Santos in = leadoff LA hit. Bear down, Victor.
Santos…..oh boy. almost as bad a Stanton who was gulp impressive.
Out of that jam. wow. Griffey, BP and Scottie. Lets go Redlegs.
Decent job Santos… If you get through the inning without giving up a run, that’s good enough for a Reds reliever…even if they had a guy on third.
Now it is time for the Kenny G show!!
If the ump wants to go how then he had better narrow the strike zone this half of the inning.
BP it is time.
BP must go up with his mind made up on whether he is swinging or taking the 1st pitch.
Kenny G show?
Hatte with a Jack???
Hattieberg lets win it
Scott Proctor threw a couple innings last night, didn’t he? And 16 hours later he’s asked to go two again? Interesting.
Let’s go Hatteberg…(please)
ugh
Only the Reds can make Scott Proctor look brilliant.
Santos out for the 11th. Lets drop them in order Victor.
Just what you want when it’s 100 degrees a day game that goes into extra innings.
Great…..5-4 Dodgers. Joy to Victor.
..or not.
Ahhhh, shazzbot. 5-4 LA. Who’s due up in the bottom of the inning?
Asking for two scoreless out of Santos was asking a lot.
need to do something here Redlegs
ValentĂn, EncarnacĂon, and Gonzalez due up.
Javy takes two fastballs, then turns on a breaking ball? Rare.
Oh. I guess waiver acquisition Ellison has joined the team, because he’s pinch-running.
Bad Bad Bad. Congrats to the Bullpen….the anything but fixed Bullpen.
They had their chances.
Can’t win ‘em all. Bring on San Diego.
The ignored and anything but fixed bullpen. That alone is reason enough to end the Krivsky era.
they cant win em all.
ya cause they’ve lost em all.
if they did any worse they might have to send the emergancy squad to krivsky’s house. there may be angry fans….
