Game Thread: Dodgers at Reds — 2007.08.08

Aaron Harang — remember him? — makes his return to the mound tonight. It’s Harang’s first start since July 28, so I look forward to seeing how he looks.

The Reds played a really nice game last night. Let’s hope for more of the same. Discuss it here.

Ross penciled in despite the righty pitching. Pierre and Furcal running around has to be the motivation for that choice. Hopefully it will work.

Too bad they aren’t playing in LA. It’s only in the 70’s there.

Does anyone really want to win the NL Central?

    ReplyReply
  • Chris

Jeff Brantley currently slobbering on Brandon Phillips, of the .324 OBP.

To Brantley’s credit, he did mention that BP can improve at plate discipline.

    ReplyReply
  • The scary thing for the Central is, over the last 10 games, the Reds have (tied) the best record…and that includes their 5 game losing streak! …that more or less sums up the NL Central.

A win tonight and they might be trailing the leader by single digits.

Looks like Harang is healthy again. He’s hitting 93 on the gun, has 3 K’s, and two perfect innings so far.

Meanwhile, Red Sox Nation is outright panicked because their lead over the Yankees is down to 5 games. Awww.

I think the luxury tax money should go to the worst team in your division. That way Tampa Bay could kick the crap out of the Bosox and Yankees.

    What a catch by Griffey!

  • And if you aren’t paying attention…Lohse is pitching for the Phillies…and gave up a 2 run homerun to Dontrelle Willis (sound familiar?!)

Wow, Thom is driving me insane. Such righteous indignation over not enough people carrying Hopper around on their shoulders after he ground out to second while Brantley keeps repeating “That’s how you play the game”. Fools, all of them.

    ReplyReply
  • Hopper grounds out to second and moves a runner to third while making an out. Brantley and Thom are talking about him like he is Ted Williams. Such a professional at bat. If it were so professional, he wouldn’t have swung at a ball, and he wouldn’t have grounded weakly to second base.

    I feel better now.

    ReplyReply
  • GodlyCynic

No, Brantley, Griffey will not cheer on Hopper either because Griffey did not make his hall of fame career by hitting ground balls to second when a runner was on second. He did it in part by, oh, wait, what he did right after Hopper, getting hits.

Sounds as if I should be glad not to have the radio feed going tonight, with the guys in such rare form.

Honestly, DA, I thought Thom was going to leave the booth, storm the dugout, and punch Encarnacion or Bronson Arroyo or anyone else who didn’t mob Hopper on the dugout steps.

    ReplyReply
  • Really, guys were sitting on the bench and giving Hopper a high five as he walked by and he sounded upset that they were not standing up waiting for him at the steps. It was rather funny from this end of things.

Harang has got it working. 6 K through 4 shutout innings; he’s rested and ready.

  • 2 wild pitches in a row moves Gonzalez from first to third just like that…

Saw where the Padres are cutting David Wells, who was scheduled to face the Reds on Saturday. If the Padres were smart, they’d let Wells pitch one last time. He’s left-handed and would probably shut the Reds out!

The Dodgers will probably pick him up and pitch him against the Reds tomorrow then release him again.

Hopper’s a smart enough batter to let Billingsley pitch around him. Let Griffey take care of the situation.

  • ChicagoRedsfan

Teams could just pick up Wells to face the Reds and release him between starts

  • If I were there I’d give Hopper a high five for walking.

I think Dunn should have his knees surgically raised about an inch, maybe an inch and a half. Then he swings and crushes those knee high pitches.

Harang averaging 15 pitches an inning, true, but meanwhile Billingsley is just short of 100 before the end of the fifth here.

Harang’s 100th pitch is the last out of the seventh. Call it a night for him, for his first start back and with a 13-man bullpen? Or leave him in?

I bet Guardado and Majewski would love to get a shot in the eighth.

  • Y-City Jim

I would like to see Harang take the Reds through the perilous 8th inning before turning it over to the pyromaniacs.

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

I have this weird feeling that Majewski would be effective here.

But I’ve been wrong many, many times about supporting anyone in the Reds bullpen.

111 pitches, 8 innings, 8 K, and a 1-0 lead. Harang may not deserve the award this year, but he’d better at least get some votes to place.

In AAA news, Coutlangus is P.O.’d to be down in Louisville. Tonight he pitched to 5 batters: a walk and four hits, including two homers, add up to 5 runs allowed and an ERA of ∞.

Also, are the RiverBats hard up for outfielders? It wasn’t enough to toss Joey Votto out there half the time, but tonight SS Anderson Machado is playing left field. And moving to right after a doubleswitch.

When is the last time the Reds threw back-to-back shutouts?

The way this Dodger offense is struggling it could be a trio of shutouts but with Dumatrait on the hill I sort of doubt that is going to happen.

18-13 is now Mackanin’s record as Reds manager. Over a season that rate’ll get you 94 wins. Not that I’m suggesting he’s capable of that kind of record, just pointing out the pace.

Re 59-61, I was thinking the same thing about the “Mackanin has engineered an incredible turnaround” talk.

I think that’s what happens when the announcers don’t make every road trip. I don’t see how anyone could be talking about a real turnaround if they watched any of that Washington series.

That said, the club is 18-13 since Mackanin took over. That’s about a .580 winning percentage, which would be 94-68 over a full season.

    Since Mackanin took over:
    CIN: 18-13
    CHI: 16-14
    STL: 14-16
    HOU: 13-16
    MIL: 12-20
    PIT: 9-17
*Updated thru tonight only for the Reds
