Scouting Report – First round – Devin Mesoraco

A National League scout has been gracious enough to share some brief scouting reports on 5 of the Reds 2005 draftees. Here are his thoughts on Devin Mesaraco (1st round):

C Devin Mesoraco (1 high school-PA) exhibits very good defensive skills, showing agility and arm strength despite having TJS as a junior in high school. His body type is such that he could add 15-20 pounds without compromising his athleticism. I thought he demonstrated good bat speed and extension with his swing that should account for 20+ HR power. His bat tends to get a bit flat at the point of contact which keeps me from predicting more power. The swing appears to be long at times and will have to adjust if a high batting average is in his future. If the Reds are patient with him and let him develop, he could be a very solid player.

    2005 Draft, eh?

It sounds like it’ll be at least 4-5 years before he’ll be in the majors. That’s not bad, I suppose, but I still would’ve rather seen an impact starting pitcher taken in the first round that could contribute next year or the year after.
