Game Thread: Reds at Nationals — 2007.08.01

The Reds and Nationals get it on in game two of the series tonight, with Bronson Arroyo taking the mound against some guy I never heard of. That Jim Bowden sure has put together an imposing roster, hasn’t he?

(Yes, I know the Nationals have won four of five games with the Reds this season. Leave me alone.)

Discuss it here.

The Reds are facing a lefty so Bronson had better throw a complete game shutout if he expects to win.

They take out Freel and Hopper does his best impression-picked off second base.

This game is toast because the Reds will never score four or more runs against a crappy lefthander.

How much worse will the Nationals ERA be in the new ball park?

    ok two things –
i can understand why the reds front office wanted to keep the same team onthe field… they are really good..

secondly … the reds have a very poor habit of making extremely average pitchers look like they just won the cy young award.

Woof. These days, Kearns and Lopez are unstoppable against the Reds and don’t hit a lick against anyone else.

    7-0.

This guy is no hitting the Reds on 44 pitches over 3 innings after getting his lights put out by Phillie last time out.

I cannot believe that Nookie is 5 for 6 in two games against the Reds.

The Reds have a long and storied history of getting absolutely manhandled by brand-new-to-the-majors starters. Add Lannan to the list.

The Reds may lose this game in terrible fashion, but that baserunning play by Phillips was fantastic. A moral victory if nothing else. 2 stolen bases on one play!

I think the Reds will be more happy than anyone that the Gnats are moving into a new ball prk.

Are they just scoring that as one stolen base?

    ReplyReply
  • DevilsAdvocate

That’s is the way it’s showing up in the gameday box score – 1 stolen base. The official scorer may need to give it a think after the game.

Is Washington really going to give Bowden a blank checkbook to sign players this offseason?

I like Elizardo. When he’s got that change working, it makes ‘em look silly. Only issue I have is that he never wastes a pitch, no matter who the batter is. And being right around the plate almost literally all the time makes him a little more hittable than he needs to be.

Then that’s when his catcher needs to go out to the mound and tell him how he is going to pitch. What happen to the day when the catcher controlled the game?

The Reds are brutal. All you have to do is look at the lead off batter, Hopper.

Dunn with an RBI through the shift.

  • Y-City Jim

Having a choice of Hopper or Freel as your leadoff hitters says volumes about the team. Hurry back, Josh Hamilton!

We’ll see it in “Down On The Farm” tomorrow, but Johnny Cueto is taking to AAA like a duck to water. Called up from AA to make a spot start for Louisville due to the Dumatrait & Elizardo promotions, he has thrown 6 shutout innings, 2 hits and no walks allowed. Very encouraging.

  • My brother is at the game tonight. He picked a terrible one to attend.

That was an awesome double steal by Phillips, though. I’ve never seen anything like that before.

Cueto has to be in the rotation next season.

my oppinion on what the rotation should be next year is

    1.Harang
    2. Dumatrait
    3. Bailey
    4. Belisle
    5. Cueto

and we should call up bruce and votto

  • Y-City Jim

I don’t think the Reds are going to take a perfectly good starter and make him a closer.

  • Y-City Jim

That’s a lot of youth in the rotation!

Where in the outfield is Bruce going to fit next season?

  • DevilsAdvocate

Most closers begin as starters – usually decent ones, too – but if they can switch to relief and become dominant, many teams feel good about doing that. I doubt Boston has any regrets about Papelbon.

That said, I haven’t heard anything about that potential move for Cueto.

  • DevilsAdvocate

Also, it should be noted that Cueto started the year in single-A. His start tonight in AAA may only be a spot start. I doubt he’s any higher than Louisville next April.

EZ looked pretty good out there tonight, eh? Good for him. Hope Dumatrait fares even better tomorrow and salvages something from the series for his team.

Cueto made a spot start in AAA earlier this year, too, and I think he did well in that one. Like Bruce, why not just leave him there and see how he handles it. He’s done well in limited action so far.

i think the reds should move griff to 1st (if they dont call up votto) or if they do swtich them off. or dunn at 1st.
freel is not in my oppinion worth leaving in the lineup he is not that good of an every day player.
    the lineup should be
    Dunn LF
    Hamilton CF
    Bruce RF
    Phillips SS
    Cantu 2B
    Votto or Griff 1B
    Catcher Ross
    Keppinger 3B

i have to say we stole kepp from KC
    man they got ripped off.
they got Phifi Larue for Keppy. man awesome

thanks but it would be a winning lineup.
have u noticed our current linups arent working?

    ReplyReply
  • Matt B.

No, I didn’t notice that, but thanks for pointing it out. I’m glad you’re so confident that your lineup would win games when you have Griffey batting 7th and at least two unproven players in the lineup batting higher than him.

First, batting Griffey 7th is ridiculous and that’s if you’re even playing him at all. What has Cantu done at the major league level since 2005? Nothing. Let’s see what he can actually do before awarding him a starting spot.

And you’re just giving up on Encarnacion? He’s only 24 and has a lot of potential. Furthermore, Gonzalez is not going to sit being paid over $4 million a year.

Batting a guy who hasn’t even played at the major-league level (Bruce) third in the lineup is just stupid. You want to ease a young player into that sort of role, if he can even be a number three hitter in the majors. Dunn has a high OBP, but he’s not a leadoff hitter.

You’re either delusional or that post was a joke.

  • Y-City Jim

I don’t think he was suggesting that as the batting order. That said is Gonzo being jettisoned in his plan?

    ReplyReply
  • willy

    i didnt do batting order.
    i just did fielding.

here would be the batting order

    keppinger
    Dunn
    phillips
    Griffey
    hamilton
    cantu
    bruce
    ross

i am not a huge fan of gonzo.
    he is ok.
but i would prefer to see phillps there and platoon freel and gonzo around the infield.
    and about eddy.
    he is not amazing.
and i would trade him to get some bullpen
