The Reds try to close out July in style with a series in Washington against Gary Majewski’s old team. Bobby Livingston will start tonight in place of the recently-traded Kyle Lohse, and he’ll look to continue his good work for the Reds.
Jeff has his series preview here at Redlegs Rundown, and I encourage you to check it out…and discuss the game here. Here’s a topic: the Reds haven’t announced the starting pitcher for Thursday yet. Will it be Homer Bailey, Phil Dumatrait, or someone else? (Although I see that Elizardo Ramirez has been recalled from Louisville, so that’s probably the answer to the question, but should it be someone else?)

Given that Bailey is still out with the groin muscle strain (conflicting reports place his return date as far as 2-3 weeks from now), Elizardo is definitely the best choice for the rotation. I look at Dumatrait’s peripherals and weep for the future.

So why is Gonzo not at SS? I thought he was back off bereavement.
Actually not bereavement but whatever the family illness leave is called.
Is Bowden making any progress with this Washington club?
RH bats 2-2
LH bats 0-2
Dunn’s stance looked different.
One inning down, three left on.
I presume since George Grande is back that his mother pulled through.
Nice job by Livingston there after the leadoff double. Same thing he’s done every time out so far – get in trouble, work his way out with minimal or no damage.
Some ugly base running by Ross.
Stop the presses – David Ross has his batting average over .200 !
I cannot believe there is an on-line dating service exclusively for farmers!
I also cannot believe that it advertises during Reds telecasts!
Bowden thought Kearns would be a 30 to 40 HR guy? In that park?
I don’t think McGwire chomping down steroids at the plate could hit 30 to 40 in that place.
What we had there was a failure to communicate.
Time to eat. It’s Taco Tuesday at Taco Bell! Weeeee!
Apparently Marty was busy playing golf on Sunday and Thom was travelling, because there’s been no mention of the John Erardi Enquirer articles from the big Sunday paper. Yet the Paul Daugherty article from today (entitled “Dunn – Luxury Reds Can’t Afford”) is getting all kinds of play.
And no one on the radio can imagine that the Reds could possibly pick up the option on Dunn next year. Frustrating to listen to.
“Inconceivable!”
“You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.”
3 innings, 6 left on. I don’t think the Reds can afford to leave guys on base.
Against Washington, the Reds might be able to get away with that many stranded runners. Still 0-0 into the fourth. They’ll get more opportunities.
I’ll feel a lot better if they get these two.
Yikes. Maybe they won’t ever score another run. That was a pretty good chance squandered.
Marty saying that the club might be better served by sitting Ryan Freel for a while and “get his head cleared,” and I agree wholeheartedly.
Meanwhile, Thom notes that Josh Hamilton has been given the go-ahead to start swinging a bat again. Hamilton said his wrist feels a lot better, which is good news.
“Austin Kearns singles on a line drive to left fielder Adam Dunn.” Aww.
I would like to see Freel clear his head somewhere else other than the leadoff spot.
Now I like that kind of an inning!!! What was that two minutes?
Livingston is certainly making a case for himself, isn’t he?
Projecting here – If Ross goes 4 – 4 tonight what’s that raise his average to?
.215? Look out, Hamley Ramirez!
What would the score of this game be in any other park? Keppinger would have had a 3-run HR last inning. Dunn would have had one just now.
Limits, huh? Continuing to move away from your original name.
Good job Conine. Finally a run scores, 1-0 Reds.
Hey, good job Edwin too! 2-0.
So much for Ross’ hopes for a 4 – 4 night!
David Ross! He might get 4-4 tonight, 3-3 so far.
Though he’s only up to .209 now, so he might get .215 or so with a 5-5 night.
Bobby Livingston is in freefall. His BA has dropped 133 points tonight.
Have they shown Jimmy Bowden on television yet?
Actually that was a screw up. I was thinking along the lines of Austin City I guess. I wondered what was going on.
Has Ross ever had a 4 hit game? It is hard to fathom.
I was wondering, Jim. It threw all your comments into moderation until I could approve them, because of the name change. I didn’t notice the name change, so I just figured that the spam filter was acting screwy.
A D’Angelo Jiminez sighting. Always fun.
Ross’ average is the highest it has been since May 30th. He is approaching his season high of .218?
You can’t stop David Ross. You can only hope to contain him.
All of a sudden, Livingston can’t get anyone out.
Serious jam here! Spin some magic, Bobby!
I love the guy. But Todd Coffey is warming up, and I’m scared.
Indeed, the three hits so far have already tied a career high for David Ross. He’s accomplished the feat just 4 times before in his career.
How close was Keppinger to making the stop there?
…and there goes the lead. 4-2 Nats. What happened to Livingston all of a sudden?
Where did you get that information on Ross, DA?
Well, the bases aren’t loaded anymore.
Ex-Reds lead 4-2.
Ouch. This is bad news here. 4 run inning for the worst offense in the league?
Retrosheet! (David Ross’ top career performances)
So DA, we could see history here tonight with Ross’ next AB! The chills!! Dimaggio’s 56 games streak, VanderMeer’s consecutive no-hitters, and now maybe Ross’ 4 hit night!
Retrosheet rocks. I hadn’t been there in a while until you linked just now, DA.
Jimenez, Dmitri, Kearns, Lopez…what’s Bowden trying to prove? Who’s next? Mike Frank?
Close the frickin’ door, Java!
I hate the Nationals.
Apparantly the best way to ensure you’re not the worst team in baseball is to take all the players from the next worst team.
A miserable 5th finally ends. Nationals 5, Reds 2.
Yeah, Retrosheet is great. Only thing with Retrosheet is that right now it doesn’t include the current season. So after looking at Retrosheet I had to check baseball-reference and make sure that Ross hadn’t had any 4-hit games this year (snort). Wiffleball in the backyard doesn’t count.
That was a Kyle Lohse-esqe performance from Livingston tonight. Appropriate since he took over his rotation spot.
That play by Belliard may be the greatest play I’ve ever seen in my life.
I’ll look forward to the highlight clip on that Belliard play. The Brennamen got excited.
Looked at Rose’s multi-hit games on RetroSheet. It is obscene! 63 4-hit games and 10 5-hit games!
I wish I had heard Brenneman. It was an unreal play. The baseball equivalent of street ball.
I agree. Incredible play.
George and Chris got excited on TV as well in their own warm fuzzy way.
The Nationals guys on television acted like it happens all the time.
With Tubby Belliard, it sure doesn’t happen all the time.
Speaking of retro, I found this site yesterday…pretty neat…
http://web.archive.org/web/20050307162619/http://redlegnation.com/
Did everyone that George Grande know either die or fall ill this week? He’s hitting double digits tonight reading them off.
The moment has arrived! Ross at the plate!
Rivera finally fields a ball hit back up the middle thus depriving Ross of his first ever 4-hit game UNLESS he gets another AB in the 9th.
The Web Archive is pretty neat. I used it to find the original Reds And Blues post about Austin Kearns’ (fake) letter to Adam Dunn while he was demoted due to weight issues. Red Hot Mama then published Adam Dunn’s (fake) reply letter.
I recorded the first Austin Kearns letter is posted in the comments. Still one of the funniest pieces of Reds-related humor I’ve ever read.
It’s just an ugly night for the Reds.
Paris Hilton News:
Heiress Paris Hilton will sing in a science fiction musical thriller by Darren Lynn Bousman, director of two-thirds of the Saw trilogy, according to entertainment industry magazine Variety.
Hilton, 26, heiress of the hotel chain that bears her family name, will perform in Repo! The Genetic Opera, set in 2056 as humanity is devastated by an epidemic.
Bousman told Variety that some 30 actresses auditioned for the role.
Also Britney Spears’ divorce is finalized. Life can now go on.
Does Freel just like to dive a lot?
Jim Bowden appearance finally.
Man what a big park..
Once the Nats move, what will be MLB biggest park? San Diego?
I think the Reds forgot that the day off was yesterday. They didn’t show up for this road trip.
Conine flies out, and that’s the game.
Which park is larger, LA or San Diego?
Just in time for The Bronx is Burning. Love that music intro.
I think Coors might be the biggest park.
But San Diego plays the biggest.
