Kyle Lohse traded to the Phillies

Here’s the press release. More analysis later:

Cincinnati Reds executive vice president and general manager Wayne Krivsky today announced the acquisition of LHP Matt Maloney from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for RHP Kyle Lohse.

Maloney, 23, this season at Philadelphia’s Class AA Reading affiliate went 9-7 with a 3.94 ERA and 1 complete game in 21 starts. He allowed just 117 hits while striking out 115 batters in 125.2 innings. He leads the Eastern League in innings pitched and ranks fourth in strikeouts.

The Phillies’ third-round draft pick in 2005, Maloney entered this season rated by Baseball America as the ninth-best prospect in the Phillies’ organization. In 2006, in just his second professional season, he was named South Atlantic League Pitcher of the Year after going 16-9 with a 2.03 ERA and 180 strikeouts in 27 starts and 168.2 innings pitched for Lakewood. He led the SAL in victories, innings pitched and strikeouts.

Maloney will report to Class AA Chattanooga.

Lohse, 28, this season went 6-12 with a 4.58 ERA in 21 starts. In his 21 appearances, the Reds went 8-13.

Loshe was weird while he was with the reds…either lights out or BP.

  • Hey, a B level prospect for Lohse isn’t a bad thing.

This is fine with me. Let’s get some new faces on the Reds. Bring up some young guys. Keep trading in my opinion.

For a Scott Boras client who is a free agent at the end of the year–this deal doesn’t bother me at all. Time to get some other pitchers a tryout in the rotation anyway.

Hmm. Who starts Tuesday, then. Reds.com still has Loshe listed…

For what it’s worth, in preseason rankings John Sickels rated Maloney as #5 in a weak Philadelphia farm system, with a B-.

Of the trio of lefty starting pitchers at 3, 4, and 5 on the Phillies top 20 prospect list (JA Happ, Josh Outman, and Maloney, all at B-), Sickels said, “I like the three lefties at the top, Happ/Outman/Maloney. At least one of them should pan out, but which one?” Right now, of the three Maloney is performing the best at the youngest age.

Good job by Krivsky. A lot of Phillies fans don’t think Maloney will be a MLB pitcher, but that is yet to be determined.

Seems like a pretty good trade. Does anyone happen to know what kind of parks they have in the Eastern League? Hitter friendly? Pitcher friendly?

Dumatrait’s next scheduled start is Wednesday, by the way. He might be moved up a day to pitch for the Reds or someone else may pitch.

The Reds did shorten Dumatrait’s last outing so I think he’s a strong possibility.

I like the trade. I do believe that Homer Bailey is due off the AAA DL on Tuesday so it would be logical to recall him.

Good enough. Not a blue-chipper, but fair enough swag for 2 months of Lohse. Any idea what sort of draft pick compensation you’d get in return? I think this guy is probably better than a sandwich pick, in any event.

We won’t know for certain until the end of the year what type of free agent status Lohse would have, but I think he’s currently slated as a Type B. I’m often wrong though, so don’t quote me.

After last season, Lohse was ranked 67th out of 103 NL starting pitchers.

Overall, he was 122nd of 187.

To qualify as a type A he’d have to be in the top 20% of pitchers. To qualify as type B he’d need to be in the 21%-40% range.

Unless Lohse suddenly becomes almost literally unhittable it looks like he’s got zero chance of netting the Phillies a draftpick after the season.

  • I like the deal too, but in fairness, I would have non-tendered Lohse before the season rather than spend $4.2M on him.

Also, I thought the Enquirer said the other day that Homer would be another 2-3 weeks.

  • Good deal. Lohse was walking after this season anyway, and he is just too inconsistent for me to resign even if he would be affordable, which being a Boras client would preclude. I think this is good. I think getting Cantu will pan out. Maybe Wayne is on a hot streak in deals again.

  • Nothing to complain about with this deal. Not a steal, but what do you expect for Lohse? I’d say it’s a fair trade all the way around.

I felt the same way, Bill. Lohse didn’t single handedly cause the team to be in the position they were in AND still allowed the Reds to get slightly better in return than what they originally paid for him, so it ends up being a good deal.

The Lohse deal prompted me to look up Zach Ward’s numbers (who the Reds traded to Minn to get Lohse.) Same age as Maloney. One level lower. Still putting up good numbers. He has a 2-14 record even though he’s only got a 3.03 ERA, 94 hits, 24 BB, and 3 HR in 101 IP.

Maloney was in A-ball LAST year, put up a 2.03 ERA, 120 hits, 73 walks, 180 K and 5 HR in 168.2 IP.
