Game Thread: Reds at Braves — 2007.07.16

Reds and Bravos start a series tonight, and LHP Bobby Livingston has been recalled from AAA to make the start. Livingston had an excellent outing last time he was up, against the Rockies, and he has a chance of being a decent major league starter. So I don’t mind seeing him get a start in the bigs.

On the other hand, does anyone think this is a precursor to leaving Homer Bailey in AAA for the rest of the season (or, in the alternative, until Kyle Lohse is traded)?

Over at Redlegs Rundown, Jeff has a pretty good series preview, so check that out and discuss the game here.

Chad, I know a lot of people have said Lohse will get traded, but are there any actual rumors out there about him?

With the Reds, especially, I don’t think rumors are worth a damn thing. Krivsky plays everything SO close to the vest (which I’m fine with, actually), any rumors that float out are irrelevant.

Does anyone remember hearing rumors before any of Krivsky’s trades? Some outfield trade was pretty common knowledge last spring, but nobody even knew for sure that it would be Wily Mo. I can’t remember any rumors before any of the other trades (Kearns/Lopez, Cormier, Franklin, Denorfia… maybe Guardado?)

We have the 2nd worst record in baseball. Why not try Phillips at SS and Keppinger at 2B?

Freel single, Hatteberg walk, Griffey single.

    1-0, Reds. I like.

The quick hook by Bobby Cox. Davies ERA skyrockets with 0 innings pitched and if all three inherited runs score it might hit infinity!

Remember that 0-out grandslam in NY? This could be an even better start than that game.

Nice play by Andruw. Saved a run. It’s good to see his offense isn’t affecting his defense.

Sigh. Bases loaded, no outs. No more runs.

If Gonzo is going to be out for any length of time then the Reds have to move Phillips to SS then put Freel at 2B and Hopper in CF.

BTW, what’s the latest on Hamilton’s wrist?

Good resiliency for Livingston. Didn’t get rattled by the leadoff single and the immediate subsequent balk, retires the middle of the order. ‘Course, helps that Andruw Jones is having one terrible year.

Long night in store for the Braves bullpen. Need to take advantage, both tonight and the next two nights, of the depleted state this will put their staff in.

I think the Gameday pitch locations are screwy in Atlanta. Those two called strikes to Dunn showed up as way outside.

Pitching with a lead – all you gotta do is throw strikes and dare ‘em to hit it. Certainly Livingston is known as a control-artist lefty type anyway. And any lineup with Andruw Jones & Jeff Francouer in it is a lineup that will swing at your pitches.

Jump in quick about the trades. The Boston Globe reported that the Reds have picked up steam in attempting to deal Arroyo. The Dodgers, Rockies and Mets could be a landing spot. Arroyo for Milledge? I’d cry. No way they part with Pelfrey.

The Reds’ rumor mill has been going especially hard in papers aside from Cincinnati.

Rumors have eased off Griffey and Dunn and are now concentrated on our pitching. Weathers has been circulating the most.

A double play would be nice here. If David Ross was playing for Atlanta then we might hope for a triple play.

Unless the return is very attractive, the Reds should be hesitant to make any trades. That said, jump on any offers for Pedro Lopez.

Bad choice. Now you’ve got to deal with the random chance of Francoeur, who can and will either make an out or hit a homerun on any pitch thrown, whether it’s at his head or in the dirt or down the middle.

No Jones for Cincinnati. Fluke year a couple years ago, is not a guy who will age well, definitely not enough patience/power to compensate for the strikeouts.

    Go Livingston!

I’m not one to normally believe in moxie or heart (or Brantley’s ‘fire in the belly’) or whatever, at least not in a way where it makes a difference between players on the field. But Livingston has almost got me convinced. Great job to get out of that bases-loaded jam against the heart of the order. 2 K’s and a pop-out.

    9-2 Reds after 5.

Mackanin is becoming more like Narron in bullpen use – why use two pitchers when five will do the job?

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

But Mackanin usually lets a pitcher finish the inning except when one completely ticks him off like Gosling did tonight. Narron would use three pitchers in a inning at times.
