2007 All Star Game Open Thread

Go, Junior!!!

Discuss the All-Star Game here. First topic: are we all disappointed that Aaron Harang, Adam Dunn, Brandon Phillips, and Chad Moeller were left off the National League squad?

  • Especially Chad Moeller. No excuse.

So I saw rumors that speculate that the Reds next year will have Jocketty at GM, Girardi as field manager, and Paul O’Neil as bench coach.

    Say hey, Willie!!!

  • The Willie Mays tribute gave me some chills. Griffey looked like a little kid around Willie. I would imagine thats exactly how I looked the time that I met Griffey….

Disappointed that there was no re-enactment of the Juan Marichal/John Roseboro brawl. What a dark moment in baseball history. Hard to believe that Marichal only got suspended a week.

    Tight strike zone tonight.

May need an early substitution at 1B with crappy defense like that. Wright ends the inning with a very nice play at 3B.

  • Ken Griffey Jr for MVP in the AS game for the 2nd time? Make it happen.

  • Only RBI of the game and gunned out Arod at the plate….

Has to be the early MVP favorite.

Couple of questions about the game since I stopped watching after Griffey’s 2nd AB:

What was controversial about the Crawford and Martinez HRs?

Where did the sudden riff between Pujols and Larussa come from?

There is no riff between LaRussa and Pujols. Someone got hurt during batting practice so he was keeping Albert out until later in the game to pinch hit or put him in a different position.

News flash to LaRussa: there’s nothing to save Albert for if you don’t at least tie the game in the 9th! Please god and Bob Castellini; don’t let this man come to Cincinnati next year!

  • LaRussa wasn’t even awake in the game. Pujols on the bench, bases loaded and Aaron Rowand up? 2 outs? Last at bat?

Rowand flies out and the 2nd best hitter in the NL never gets to the plate.

Pujols did complain after the game. LaRussa’s response was essentially “If he wants to get mad, it’s a free country.”

LaRussa is definitely out at the end of the year and just doesn’t care anymore.

  • I loved how thrilled Reyes was to catch Willie’s pitch and how he asked him to sign the ball afterward. I really like that guy.

I would love to have a guy like Reyes on my team. Changes the whole game when he gets on base.

Reyes is a hell of a lot of fun, but he’s more valuable in a big park like Shea – GABP would eat up some of his value.

The LaRussa thing just gets dumber and dumber, the more I think about it.

I can see saving a guy (sortof), but by the point Rowand came up, there was about a 2% chance that the game would one more batter (let alone another 8 batters, until the pitcher’s spot would’ve come back up).

Either Pujols gets a hit and wins the game, or he gets out and the game is over. I suppose it could’ve gone into extras, but only if Pujols walked and then Sanchez got out; or if Pujols singled and Carlos Lee was thrown out at the plate. That ain’t worth saving Pujols for.

Willie Mays, in my book, was the best all-around player ever. He could do it all; hit with power, fast and a great base stealer, and an unequaled center fielder with a rifle arm. Before he came up to the New York Giants in 1951, they were a slow, rather boring team with some pretty good pitching. Willie energized them and they had that great rivalry with the Brooklyn Dodgers until 1958 when the worst move in baseball history broke up that great New York rivalry. Nice to see him honored, even if it was in S.F.

Correction: Derrick Lee as on base, not Carlos (making it even MORE likely that a single scores a run).
