Cueto Southern League Pitcher of the Week

Pitcher of the Week
Johnny Cueto, Chattanooga
1-0, 0.69 ERA, 2 G, 2 GS, 13 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 19 SO
Cueto, a 21-year-old flamethrower, made his Double-A debut with the Lookouts on Tuesday and immediately showed that he belonged. Well, almost immediately. After surrendering a home run to the first batter he faced, the Dominican native hurled six scoreless innings and picked up the win against Huntsville. Cueto was even better against the Mudcats on Sunday, as he struck out 13 batters over seven shutout innings in a game that was suspended with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning.

13 IP 8H 19K….that is strong.

  • This guy gets better every week. He’s slowly but surely inching into Bailey/Bruce prospect status.

  • Could he be a factor next spring training?

i think scouts would disagree with you chad, because of his frame i think he’s less projectable than either of those top guys.

but here’s hoping. could he get himself into a september call up?

He could work now. The season is at a nasty unwanted crosspoint. Why not give him a shot. He can not do any worse then what we have now.

  • I just wanted to make a note here about Cueto. Last season he was listed at 174 pounds. According to Milb.com he is now listed at 198 pounds. If he really added 24 pounds over the last season and a half, that is very good news for his durability.
