Jay Bruce, Joey Votto chosen for Futures Game

The headline says it all. Reds prospects Jay Bruce and Joey Votto were chosen to play in the Futures All-Star Game. Bruce will play for the US team, and Votto will play for the International squad, eh.

  • In other minor league news (some of which is covered below), the following guys have been promoted:

From Sarasota (high A) to Chattanooga:
    P Josh Roenicke
    INF Adam Rosales
    OF Jay Bruce

    Demoted from Sarasota to Dayton:
    OF Carson Kainer to Dayton

    Demoted from Chattanooga to Sarasota:
    OF Cody Strait
    INF Tonys Gutierrez

    Promoted from Dayton to Sarasota:
    P Jose Rojas
    INF Gerardo Cabrera

Some of this is roster-shuffling, as opposed to actual merit-based promotion and demotion, but it’s good news for Rosales and Roenicke.

    why did they demote kainer?

  • It doesn’t make a lot of sense, because there are ABs open, with Bruce moving up. It looks like the Dragons have a pretty normal OF rotation of Stubbs, Denis Phipps, and Chris Heisy.

Phipps is stinking it up (OPS in the upper 500s), so maybe he’s going to head back to Billings or the GCL.

Kainer had a kidney transplant last year and they are hoping that he can get into the field more in Dayton where he was only being used primarily as a DH in Sarasota

  • Matt, but this makes no sense. He’s hit at Sarasota and there are AB’s available there, especially with Bruce moving to Chattanooga. Strait shouldn’t get ABs at his expense, neither should Holden. Heck, you could even say he should play in front of Szymanski, except Szymanski plays CF.

I don’t understand bringing Strait or Gutierrez back to A…

I also don’t understand the lack of moves from Dayton to Sarasota. Valaika and Turner should be in Sarasota, at the least, as should Watson. Maybe they’re waiting for something, though I don’t know what.

Wayne was in town watching the Dragons last night; I think the moves for Turner and Valaika are coming soon

Freel was in Dayton with Bill Bray and Jared Burton working out last night before the game

The stuff that I posted about Kainer was the story that was relayed to me (?)
