It’s the rubber match of this three game series with Colorado today, and Matt Buh-lissle will face off against Rodrigo Lopez. If the Reds can win this game, and the series, it will mean that the Reds are the greatest team on earth. Nothing less.
No pressure….

I don’t know if I can watch. Jerry’s starting Wise in center, Castro at 2B and Moeller behind the plate. Dunn’s sitting. It’s Wise, Castro, Moeller and the pitcher at the bottom of the order. Gawd almighty!
I think I’ll watch the AAA Bats gamecast, they’ll have a stronger lineup.
I don’t know if I can watch that either.
I wish I were handier with a statistical database. I’d love to know how many lineups had worse career numbers out of the 6-8 holes than this one.
Wise, Castro, Moeller…that’s gotta be historically bad.
Lineups
Reds:
Hopper LF
Hatteberg 1B
Griffey RF
Encarnacion 3B
Gonzalez SS
Wise CF
Castro 2B
Moeller C
Belisle P
I’m not exaggerating:
This may be the worst pre-All Star Break lineup the Reds have fielded in my lineup. Some of those early 80s teams might rival it, but this is just terrible.
Gonzo at 5th again? Narron’s an idiot.
Is there a worse grouping than Gonzo, Wise, Castro, Moeller, pitcher, Hopper in a row? Awful.
That should read “in my lifetime” above.
And you know, this group will probably score ten runs. I hope!
Rox:
Taveras CF
Matsui 2B
Holliday LF
Helton 1B
Atkins 3B
Hawpe RF
Torrealba C
Carroll SS
Lopez P
Narron must not feel like he’s on the hot seat. He’s not even trying to win today’s game.
This is even worse than a Bob Boone Sunday special. Is Narron channelling?
No runs in the first. Let’s go, Balissle.
Oh no, a Bob Boone reference, and we’re not even in the bottom of the first yet. It’s going to be a long day.
Great inning by Buh-lissle. He’s turned the corner to become a decent ML pitcher.
Harang, Arroyo, Belisle, Bailey next year. That could be the best rotation in the majors.
Still plenty of good seats available for Saturday, by the way, if you’re inclined to go watch Homer.
I’d have my tix in hand, but will be on my way to DC to watch the Orioles. Starting to wish I had a different set of plans!
Wise with an RBI Triple!!
TRADE ADAM DUNN AND START WISE!!
1-0. Dewayne Wise should be on the ALl Star Team.
Good lord, is that the real lineup? It’s not a joke? I’m piling on here, I realize, but good grief.
And of course, Gonzalez bunts his way on and DeWayne promptly drive him in with a triple.
I just sent you an email, Chris, asking if you wanted to go to the game on Saturday. I forgot about your trip.
Yeah, it’s the real lineup.
I seriously almost turned off the television when I saw that.
Jerry Narron, Bob Boone, Ray Knight…why has this team been inflicted with so many morons as manager?
Castro struck out with a runner on third and no outs.
I can’t believe it.
my wife is trying to convince me to drive from Cincinnati to Baltimore after the game. haha
Yes, I said that right. My wife is trying to convince ME!
Moeller executes the squeeze. 2-0.
Belisle gets a single into left.
Our pitcher is the best hitter out of our 6-9 batters.
And then he steals second!!!!!!!
Buh-lissel steals 2nd!
You should do it, Chris W!
I wish I could find someone to make the trip up and back with me.
Belisle stole second? Is GameDay lying?
I love Belisle more every day.
Mapquest says 7.5 hours from cincinnati to where I need to go. I don’t know if that is manageable following a night game!
Aaah, you’re a baby. You can do it!
That’s what I like to see, and why I hate the DH. Pitchers can be so much fun.
7.5 hours? Nothing to it. I could do that with my eyes closed.
And if I tried to do it after a night game, my eyes would probably be closed because I’d be asleep.
I’m ordering tickets, Chris. I’ll get one for you if you want!
Id have 4.5 hours to Cincinnati, followed by 7.5 hours to Northern VA. You’d have to pry my eyes open with a crow bar.
Wow, Castellini is there. Surprising to see. Wonder if something big is happening.
I already had tickets for Saturday, so I’m looking forward to it.
When are you ordering tix. My wife keeps telling me we can do it!
If I did this, I’d be watching games in Cincinnati on Saturday, Baltimore on Sunday, and New York on Thursday.
That is one heck of a baseball road trip!
It’s too bad it took this lineup for Narron to justify it to himself, but Encarnación is back in the cleanup spot. I didn’t notice in all the hub-bub over the 6-7-8-9 guys.
Oh, and a Garrett Atkins HR was the first Rockies hit, 2-1 Reds.
That’s an awesome baseball trip.
I’m planning on ordering tickets soon. I’ll make the trip if you will do it.
This lineup is terrible, but part of what I love about baseball is the fact that a lineup like this could beat any team on a given day.
We’ll have to drive separate.
I look at this lineup and I keep expecting Mike Frank to enter the game.
That’s what Moeller is in there for – defense. Nice to catch Matsui at second.
Yeah, great throw by Moeller.
Check your email, Chris.
So this is a little off the game talk, but what do you think the reds will do with their draft? I always think that the first pick shows what they are thinking.
I hope they take Greg Oden.
3B out of Texas (?). That’s what I keep hearing.
They say they aren’t drafting for organizational need, they’re going to pitch the best player available. I think that’s a good strategy.
Can Oden pitch? haha
Probably. He can do a lot of things on the court, so I wouldn’t be surprised if he can pitch.
Anyone know how many pitches Belisle has thrown?
56 pitches through 4 innings for Belisle.
CASTRO!!
TRADE PHILLIPS AND PLAY JUAN!
Castro up, bases loaded, one out. Squeeze again?
Crazy play. Yikes.
hey, it’s nice to see these guys hit and not having to rely on homeruns all the time. EE is coming back with serious things to prove and he’s proving it.
Don’t take the hit away from Castro, official scorer! That’s terrible – he needs those hits. But they credit him with a sac. fly and charge an error on the LF.
And Gonzalez’ leg is slightly injured, it seems.
what the heck took over the WLW Gameday Feed?
Sounded like the studio guys talking about a remote control. No commercial. Wierd.
That was odd. But at least it wasn’t the Telephone Of Eternal Ringing.
Oh Man. I hate the TOER.
And at least this noise isn’t going over the game.
Nice running catch by Hopper to end the inning. In Colorado there’s enough space to run around without colliding with your fellow outfielders.
And he leads off the next inning with a hustling double.
Injury report: Alex Gonzalez came out of the game with a strained hamstring.
Edwin is red hot. RBI double and sets up another run-scoring opportunity with 1 out and runners at 2nd/3rd.
HOMERUN Phillips. Excellent. 8-2. Tihs lineup should be out there every day.
Never would have guessed this lineup would have 8 runs in the 6th
Blowing the Game Open!!!
Of course, it should be noted that the majority of the damage has been done by the 3-4-5 hitters.
Got here late, but I should be late more often if the Reds are going to score 8 runs each time!
8-4….hmmm Rockies putting runs across
I wish I understood Jerry Narron. Despite Belisle looking gassed last inning (92 pitches, though the mile-high Coors takes more out of you), he is asked to come up to bat. This, despite there being a runner on. And what should be a relatively unstressed bullpen, heading into an offday tomorrow.
When Hamilton comes back what are we going to do with Hopper?? I think he is the lead off hitter that we haven’t had in a long time.
When Hamilton returns on Tuesday, Hopper can go back to being the #1 reserve outfielder (before he turns back into a pumpkin as a starter), and DeWayne can go back to the minors where he should be.
Unless something stupid happens like Dunn/Griffey getting traded.
Coutlangus is toast, next pitcher, 2BB 0.0 inning
oh Bullpen.
The bullpen sure has a problem with walks. Bases loaded two out now for the Rockies, thanks to Coutlangus walking the first two batters he sees.
I’d be VERY surprised if Hopper played like this over a full season, so the Reds should enjoy the hot streak and not start thinking this guy is a long-term solution.
He’s never hit like this in the minors. Anyone can do it for a couple of weeks, but unless Hopper sold his soul a month ago in exchange for hitting ability, he can’t sustain it.
Just my opinion, of course.
3 walks. UGH.
They’re going to blow this. Coutlangus comes in and walks three straight batters.
Now, it’s Majewski. I want to throw up.
sheezus. 3 walks in a row. Didn’t he do that last time he came in, too?
Coutlangus needs to go to AAA, and Coffey needs to be back in Cincinnati.
The bullpen strikes again.
Okay, Majewski, time for you to shove it up everyone’s you-know-what, like you said you were going to do.
Majewski knows how to throw strikes.
coffey has been unhitable at louisville for what it’s worth.
i want to know what the reds are going to do about this lefthander situation in the bullpen. It’s bad enough not having a lefty starter, but both our lefthanders in the pen are sporting ERAs over 5.
i guess bray and guardado are the answer if they can make it back, but i don’t know if this team is ever going to have a spot in the rotation for dumatrait and livingston, and i’d give them a shot in the pen.
I didn’t realize Justin Germano has basically been unhittable this season. 4-0 with an era in the 1’s. Who did we get when we traded him?
I didn’t realize Justin Germano has basically been unhittable this season. 4-0 with an era in the 1’s. Who did we get when we traded him?
Cormier
Cormier was obtained for Germano last July. Doesn’t feel good.
i have a bad feeling again
Bases loaded, no outs in the bottom of the eighth. Go-ahead run is at the plate.
Majewski can shove it up his own @$$.
F’in Cormier. Thanks for reminding me.
If Narron is willing to go with Weathers for 6 outs right now, why not just let him start the inning?
It’s unbelievable what this bullpen does. When you have to turn to David Weathers as your #1 reliever, that says it all.
Have to bring in Weathers earlier and earlier.
Jesus……………
You can take Majewski and Weathers and dump them off a cliff, as far as I’m concerned. I don’t want either of them on my team.
rediculous.
Wow. This is terrible. Triple, tie game, still no out.
First hitter against Weathers clears the bases with a triple. This bullpen sucks so bad, I can hear it from here.
No win for Buh-lissle.
Blah Blah Blah
Jerry, you should have NEVER taken Belisle out after he gave up a two-out SINGLE!!! Don’t you KNOW your bullpen SUCKS ASS???
It’s time to start turning some of these back of the rotation starters in the minors into relievers.
It took less than two innings to blow a six run lead.
They should just send the entire bullpen to the minors, or cut them, and bring up Louisville’s bullpen. Couldn’t be any worse.
If Todd Coffey isn’t in St. Louis on Tuesday, it’ll be a crime.
9-8. Weathers is going to get the loss, and he deserves it.
F(*&(*#@&$(*&^#@!%(*#!&^$(*#!Q&$
Well, thanks for getting my hopes up, Dave. Next time could you TELL Hawpe you’re going to pipe a fastball??
If Krivsky HAD to trade Kearns and Lopez, couldn’t he have gotten at least ONE reliever who could pitch????
Oh yeah, Coffey’s the answer. If the question is: name a Reds reliever who has sucked this year.
Ready for Everyday Eddie or a real closer….or a real pull pen….please
Castro-Moeller-Conine are due up in the ninth. There’d better be pinch-hitters for at least two of those.
why does weathers deserve it? he didn’t load the bases, nor did he walk 3 straight. this is all about the cooter and the magic man. weathers wasn’t great, but he’s given up 1 run in one inning so far. if the others could do that we’d still be winning.
name a Reds reliever who has sucked this year.
Oof, there are a lot of correct answers to that question.
jeff g i don’t know if your’re responding to my comment, but i certainly didn’t say coffey is “the answer,” but unlike sarloos, he is getting it done at AAA.
I don’t care how sick Dunn is. Unless he’s on his death bed, he better be hitting this inning
blah awful simply awful.
Castro bats, and I die a little inside.
No, Al. Wasn’t you. RagTag said it’d be a “crime” if Coffey isn’t in St. Louis Tuesday. What has he shown anyone that he’d be the answer to this mess?
CAN ANYONE BUNT?????
Coffey got it done in the majors, too, more than these other jokers. Check out his numbers, Jeff. His ERA in may was barely over 3.
He had turned the corner and was being VERY effective, then he had one bad outing and Krivsky over-reacted (again) and sent him to AAA.
Again, Jeff, check the numbers and compare them to the other stiffs in the pen. Coffey wasn’t as bad as you remember.
And Castro resuscitates me. Wow, a leadoff double for Castro. Narron’s a freakin’ genius.
Leadoff Double! Now, another bunt by Moeller and Conine SAC and we tie it up!
No one said Coffey is “the answer,” but he’s better than all but one or two of the people currently in the bullpen.
Randy said it best. Coffey had a terrible outing at the end, and a terrible stretch for a week or so, but he was the best or 2nd best REds reliever otherwise.
Does either team want to win this game?
Oh nevermind! Thanks for the help
Good god. Castro can’t get picked off there – that’s what veterans are supposed to bring is critical knowledge of those situations.
And yet it works out when they throw it away. Runner at third, no out now.
And he doesn’t have to be “the answer” to improve this pen. There is no question whatsoever that this bullpen would be better with Coffey here and one of these other idiots sent out to pasture.
Good Lord…it’s amazing how great Coffey is compared to the rest. But, he’s still been awful this year. CONINE!!!
Rock on, Conine!
a double sing and run scored…wow.
Undeserving, but the Reds tie it up on a Conine single. 9-9. Yikes.
so, do you bat for Weathers? Who do you send out in the 9th if you do.
ERA of 3.18 in May, which encompasses about half of his appearances for the year. Yep, awful.
Look, it’s just my opinion, which is worth approximately nothing, but I think he had gotten himself straightened out and had been very effective over his last ten appearances or so before he had one bad outing and was sent out.
Marcus McBeth will come out to make his major-league debut in the bottom of the ninth in a tie game on the road. Godd luck, kid.
Nope, Weathers is still in the game. Bit surprising.
Oh, no he won’t. I forgot Conine was double-switched in earlier, not pinch-hitting for Weathers. So Weathers still in there.
I don’t know if I want to see McBeth’s debut today, but I’m looking forward to seeing the kid pitch. He’s an intriguing acquisition.
And Weathers looks dominant in the ninth. Of course.
Let Weathers hit! Bullpen left: Stanton, McBeth, Salmon, Santos…if the Reds take the lead, who closes?
Majewski’s ERA on the season: 15.00.
That’s showing all your critics, Gary!
what a crazy game. weathers, while it’s still not a great day for him with that bases-clearing tripple, still stepped up there.
it’ll be marcus mcbeth on to save it after the reds take the lead. who pinch hits for weathers? dunn? javy?
Good question, Jeff. I’d bet on Santos, actually. Is he rested?
If not, probably Salmon.
Weathers drives me nuts
McBeth is gonna get his first career save after Ross goes yahtzee.
Dunn pinch hits to lead off the tenth.
I mean Dunn
Hope you’re right, Alex.
Dunn is deemed able to pinch-hit for Weathers. McBeth just by dint of his minor-league numbers might be the best major-league reliever the Reds have.
Alex, that’d be nice!
Single for Dunn. I’ll take it.
No homer, but we have a runner on with no outs for Junior.
Double play. I think I’m going to curse.
Good God Junior is SLOW
Nothing doing in the top of the tenth. So…McBeth?
well the heart of the order just went down like a sack of dirt. lets hope we get another shot at them.
Nope, Santos comes on. And I was just readying my Shakespeare quotations, too.
santos. i just don’t get it. why do you send livingston down to get mcbeth, and then not use him, either when you have a 6 run lead, or when you’re in extra innings. i just don’t get it.
I smell trouble…
I see trouble…
WALK HELTON!!!!!!!!
good to get to the guy with a HR and 2b already.
Well, the Reds didn’t deserve this one. 10-9 Colorado in 10 innings.
well, not too much to be said about this one. same as it ever was, bullpen and bullpen management. keep doing the same thing, and you’ll get the same result.
why is McBeth, Salmon and/or Burton on the roster if you refuse to use them. I don’t get it. I’d rather see someone else blow the game then the same people over and over again. And say all you want about Weathers being solid this year. Check out his stats with inherited runners all but one has scored this year
Narron would have been better off using McBeth.
“We still have judgment here; that we but teach
Bloody instructions, which being taught, return
To plague the inventor.”
How can one pitching staff be so bad! That was ANOTHER shameful performance by the bullpen.
this is the worst season for ifs ands and buts i’ve ever had as a reds fan. this team finds ways to lose in games where that’s saying something. it just feels like they’re not that bad, but they are.
Jerry Narron may not be manager by morning.
Bang head repeatedly on wall……..Dump the Pen and replace them all with Gas Cans oh wait they already are gas cans. Any how make sure you employ gas van on any fire to put it out of the win because that is what this Pen does well right now.
I am not sure if it matter who is managing the team anymore. The Starters all must go 9 to consider an attempt to get a win.
I agree with Jim. Castellini and Krivsky were both in Colorado today. Narron may be gone with the off-day tomorrow.
I also agree with Justin that it probably doesn’t matter. Bucky Dent will be the same deal.
Narron’s not going anywhere. If he didn’t get fired after the disastrous homestand, he won’t get fired after 2/3 of the road trip.
Bucky Dent will be the same deal
And you know this how? Dent hasn’t managed a ML team in 17 seasons. What’s the basis for predicting his performance if and when he gets the job?
I’m a lot less worried about who the manager is than I am about Krivsky getting fleeced in another panic trade to shore up the bullpen. I’m hoping the imminent return of Everyday Eddie will stave off any panic moves.
I don’t know that about Dent. The point was that it likely doesn’t matter. Narron does some dumb things, but so does every manager, and there’s no reason to believe Dent would be outstanding.
This team has problems that are a lot worse than the manager. That’s all I was trying to say. Even if Dent is the best manager ever, it won’t make a difference with this team.
All this debate about Narron and/or the bullpen…I’d just like to see Krivsky grow some balls and be decisive again rather than hemming and hawing and not doing anything to improve this team outside of calling up a minor leaguer here or there. It’s obvious that this team needs outside help.
If I had my way, guys like McBeth, Burton and Salmon would be carrying the mail right now.
