Kyle Lohse vs. Ian Snell in the wrap-up of the worst homestand I can ever remember suffering through.
Surely Lohse is due for a good start:
Lohse followed the shortest outing of his career — 1 1/3 innings against Cleveland in which he allowed five earned runs — with another rough night against the Nationals on Wednesday. The right-hander allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings to suffer his sixth consecutive loss.
No Reds pitcher had lost six consecutive starts since Brian Reith in 2001.
Ugh.
I’m back at home, but I’ll be watching. Discuss it here.

From John Fay’s blog, Livingston called up today, Saarloos sent down to Louisville. Sounds like a patchwork transactions to supply Livingston for the back end of the pen since Santos is not available after his long outing yesterday. Saarloos sounds like he tried to hide his disappointment, but he still comes through like he feels that he is not the problem and is being made the scapegoat.
Re-arranging deck chairs on the Reds-tanic.
The move was made strictly because the Reds needed someone in long relief today. Santos certainly can’t pitch today. What else do you want them to do? My guess is Dumatrait or Milton will make the start the next time the fifth spot comes around.
Lineup for the Reds on this Memorial Day:
Freel CF
Hatteberg 1B
Phillips 2B
Dunn LF
Encarnacion 3B
Gonzalez SS
Hopper RF
Ross C
Lohse P
Pirates:
Bautista 3B
Duffy CF
Sanchez 2B
LaRoche 1B
Bay LF
Nady RF
Wilson SS
Cota C
Snell P
Edwin raised his OPS about a hundred points or so over the weekend. Hope he keeps that up.
Obviously, that’s why the move was made. It’s still re-arranging deck chairs, rather than addressing the real problems with the club.
I have reason to believe those changes are coming, though.
Hope you’re right, Chad. Narron being fired is probably the first of those moves, though I’m not entirely sure that accomplishes anything.
That’s the way it works, though. The manager takes the fall.
Freel (.314 OBP) isn’t too good right now.
Harang made a list of the Top 7 players in baseball. Probably not the list he wants to be on, though. We love ya, Harang.
Good first inning by Lohse. That’s a start, after the last two games.
Harang probably belongs on that list, but you are right, Chris, we love the big guy!
Without Santos…Saarloos is the long man out of the pen because he didn’t record an out and said yesterday that he would be available in long relief.
*shudder*
He’s got some stuff to work out. He’s not THE problem; he’s just one of many. Remember, Coffey stunk it up too and got sent out.
Bay with a one-out triple in the second, Nady grounds to third, and a good play by EE to get Bay at home.
Outstanding.
Dunn trying to bunt his way on against the shift. Poorly executed, though.
Then a K.
Hey, for what it’s worth, I’ve been to three games this year, and Dunn has had 2-homer games in two of those contests.
I need to get up to Cincy more often.
EE hit that ball very hard, but he’s out. I feel confident that he’s coming around.
Gonzo gunned out at second.
Obviously Gonzalez didn’t have much a jump.
For some reason, the Brewers went with a shift against Adrian Gonzalez (that dude is GOOD, btw). He laid down a really pretty bunt down the 3b line for a hit.
So Freel has succeeded in killing himself.
Freel is unconscious on the field. This doesn’t look good.
Freel hasn’t moved at all.
Scary. I always thought Freel would hurt one of the other players instead of himself. At least he’s breathing.
He is breathing though.
The collision didn’t look that bad.
Guess Junior is going to play today after all.
Working on Memorial Day. This stinks!
Keep me updated.
Don’t worry, Chris W. You’ll have all summer off, and the rest of us will be working.
I’d say he initially was unconscious. Add a concussion and just being sure about the spinal cord.
Derrick Turnbow emailed JoeSportsFan and wants to know how he wasn’t #1 on that list!
And Willie McGee is the all-time #1 IMO
Freel is frustrating sometimes, but I think we all love the little guy’s hustle and determination. Hope he’s alright.
My feelings exactly, RagTag.
Am I the only one who saw Hopper grab the ball and put it in Freel’s glove?
Farney is looking out for him.
Ah yes, the Summer off! 3 more days!!!
Chris W is right — Turnbow was robbed!
I didn’t see that, renbutler. Did they call it an out?
How did Majewski not make that list above? He’s scary-looking.
They are immobilizing Freel and carting him off. Very scary, but we can all hope that it’s just precautionary. He hasn’t moved much, though.
I think Freel is okay. It is all the precautionary stuff that you see in a NFL game. It looked like he moved his arms which is a good thing.
Man, you never see this in baseball. I guess if we ever expected to see it, we expected Freel to be involved.
Freel made the catch.
Yeah, he was moving his arms a little, but he wasn’t moving anything else that I saw.
I am at work so I will have to wait until I get home to see it. Sounds bad.
If Freel is out for any period of time, we had better get Josh Hamilton back to Cincinnati in a hurry!
I guess it’s an out!
I thought I saw the ball roll out after Freel landed. He might have had the ball long enough for an out anyway. However, I swear that when Hopper first reached Freel, he subtly grabbed the ball and placed it in the glove.
I still remember when he wiped out that old woman in LA. Maybe she will send him a get well card.
I remember that, too. I thought that old lady was dead.
Lohse looks stronger after the break. Quick strikeout, then two quick strikes on the next batter.
Agreed on Hamilton. Get him some Pepto Bismol and on the field. Maybe Jay Bruce makes a temporary jump to the bigs.
I still am not sure how he got hurt so bad. Didn’t look like Hopper hit him very hard, and didn’t look (to me) like his head hit the ground very hard.
If they only win one game this week it had better be today for Farney’s little buddy.
I want Jay Bruce to make a permanent jump to the bigs.
If he keeps playing like he has, he’ll be ready before we know it.
That crash didn’t really look that bad, but they were sure concerned about Freel.
George Grande just set the record for saying “little guy.”
Hitting the back of your head is one of the most dazing collisions. You don’t know what freakin’ planet you’re on afterwards.
May Freel get the chance of setting the record for saying “old guy” in reference. to George
To try to lighten the mood…
Since Willie McGee was mentioned above, I thought I’d pass along a story. When I was younger and Trivial Pursuit first came out, they had a sports edition. (They may still have this, I dunno.)
Anyway, one of the questions was “This MLB outfielder is nicknamed “E.T.” because of his resemblance to the movie alien.”
The answer, of course, was McGee. I always thought that question was unneccesarily mean, but my brothers and I thought it was hilarious at the time.
Hey Chris W…you going to your aunt’s house today at 4? The kids want to know if you are bringing your little one.
Chad, sounds like you had a great time, despite the terrible baseball played by the Reds.
When can we expect a full report?
So let say Narron gets canned in the very near future. Does Castellini have the chance of bringing in a Joe Girardi?
Depends. I may be chasing the little white ball around the golf course after work. If not, I’ll be there.
The little one will be there regardless.
You mean Willie McGee wasn’t ET? This is like finding out someone is inside the Mickey Mouse costume!
Let’s get tough here, Kyle!
These teams used up all of their runs yesterday.
Think Narron knows he’s canned if they lose today? Think it’s going to happen either way?
Maybe not! Two run homer for David Ross!
We did have a good time, RagTag. I’m working on a post now. Hope to have it up this evening, and I’ll have pictures in a couple of posts tonight and tomorrow.
At least, that’s the plan, assuming family obligations don’t get in the way.
Junior punches one into center, through the fog left over after Ross’s homer fireworks.
I wanna know why Griffey and Valentine did not start the day, they both KILL Snell. Narron is a moron. I understand Griffey needs a day off but not against Snell and during this horrific homestand, and if you want to play Hopper give Freel or Dunn the day off. Dunn (can’t hit Snell), I mean did he ignore the stats today??
Well, Dunn just doubled into the corner. Let’s hope EE can get him in.
Wild pitch, Dunn at third with one out. EE HAS to get him in.
I don’t think Griffey should ever sit at home. Let him sit on the road. The fans come to see him.
And he does! Single scores Dunn, 3-0 Reds.
The Freel situation may delay the Narron firing.
As much as I want to see Narron fired, we have to see a real replacement this time not another “hand it over to the bench coach” promotion.
Well, then Narron may as well stay, because I think there is no chance that Bucky Dent isn’t the replacement.
Listening to Welch’s discussion on the Saarloos move. He made the statement that Saarloos didn’t pitch any worse than Milton or Lohse recent outing. I think not getting anyone out would be considered worse.
Bucky is just more of the same. If the attitude is going to change then you have to bring in someone with a different attitude. That’s why Florida flourished when McKeon took over. Bucky is a Narron clone just as Narron was a Miley clone. Everyone on this roster has accepted losing.
Great play by EE! That’s three good ones today.
This one was a diving stop, and a perfect throw from his knees.
The spirit of Farney must have taken possession of the Reds. Defensive-a-rama!!
Why does the guy singing “God Bless America” look like Dan Aykroyd?
Griffey, Hit one for Freel!!
Griffey, hit one for me!
Which reliever will blow it today?
Stanton
MAJEWSKI!!! He’ll blow it!
Good play by Hatty, great block of the plate by Ross. Double play ends the little Pirate rally. Excellent!
I vote for Weathers as the reliever that will blow it.
Freel’s neck and head scans came back normal.
What about Narron’s head scan? Any activity?
EE with the RBI single. Edwin is back, friends.
Harang made a list of the Top 7 players in baseball. Probably not the list he wants to be on, though.
What about MAJEWSKI??? He’s absolutely scary looking!

I vote complete game Lohse, no relief necessary (what a relief).
The last time a guy went the distance, or tried, was Arroyo. He got the L and hasn’t been the same since.
Chad was right! Lohse was due for a good start. A complete game shutout.
I’m not sure why this win feels so good. It’s just been so long….
So satisfying . . .
Lohse delivered exactly what the team needed in the midst of this no-days-off schedule, and then some. Thank goodness.
Man, Edwin can really pick it. Harness his arm and he’s Gold-Glove caliber. I hope he can keep it up at the plate, too, and bring back some of that life he had in his bat last year.
Defense? Starting pitching? Timely hitting? Who were those guys???
By the way, 105 pitches for Lohse in the complete-game 4-0 win.
Complete game, a shutout, Ross homers, excuse me, where did the Reds go?….I’ll take a win anyway we can get it now.
Marty was awfully excited about EE’s defense today (and Gonzalez’). These flashes of brilliance are why I put no credence in the “put him at first” stuff.
Looks like renbutler was right in comment 45 above:
Check this out.
EE must be afraid of the bus ride to Louisville again. He my not want to join our Dutchman there.
Will whoever climbed inside Lohse’s body this afternoon, please stay in there for the rest of the season!
Or at least until the trade deadline!
The Cape Cod Baseball Hall of Fame is leaving its current home at the Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich, but first, we have compiled a Hall of Fame photo album for all the fans out there at: http://www.newenglandshores.com/Shores_Journal/Baseball.htm
