Game Thread: Pirates at Reds — 2007.05.28

Kyle Lohse vs. Ian Snell in the wrap-up of the worst homestand I can ever remember suffering through.

Surely Lohse is due for a good start:

Lohse followed the shortest outing of his career — 1 1/3 innings against Cleveland in which he allowed five earned runs — with another rough night against the Nationals on Wednesday. The right-hander allowed seven runs (six earned) on nine hits over 5 2/3 innings to suffer his sixth consecutive loss.

No Reds pitcher had lost six consecutive starts since Brian Reith in 2001.

Ugh.

I’m back at home, but I’ll be watching. Discuss it here.

From John Fay’s blog, Livingston called up today, Saarloos sent down to Louisville. Sounds like a patchwork transactions to supply Livingston for the back end of the pen since Santos is not available after his long outing yesterday. Saarloos sounds like he tried to hide his disappointment, but he still comes through like he feels that he is not the problem and is being made the scapegoat.

Re-arranging deck chairs on the Reds-tanic.

  • RedsFanInMd

The move was made strictly because the Reds needed someone in long relief today. Santos certainly can’t pitch today. What else do you want them to do? My guess is Dumatrait or Milton will make the start the next time the fifth spot comes around.

Edwin raised his OPS about a hundred points or so over the weekend. Hope he keeps that up.

    ReplyReply
  • Chad

Obviously, that’s why the move was made. It’s still re-arranging deck chairs, rather than addressing the real problems with the club.

I have reason to believe those changes are coming, though.

  • RagTag

Hope you’re right, Chad. Narron being fired is probably the first of those moves, though I’m not entirely sure that accomplishes anything.

That’s the way it works, though. The manager takes the fall.

Freel (.314 OBP) isn’t too good right now.

Harang made a list of the Top 7 players in baseball. Probably not the list he wants to be on, though. We love ya, Harang.

    ReplyReply
  • Chad

Good first inning by Lohse. That’s a start, after the last two games.

    ReplyReply
  • RagTag

Harang probably belongs on that list, but you are right, Chris, we love the big guy!

Without Santos…Saarloos is the long man out of the pen because he didn’t record an out and said yesterday that he would be available in long relief.

    *shudder*

He’s got some stuff to work out. He’s not THE problem; he’s just one of many. Remember, Coffey stunk it up too and got sent out.

Bay with a one-out triple in the second, Nady grounds to third, and a good play by EE to get Bay at home.

    Outstanding.

Dunn trying to bunt his way on against the shift. Poorly executed, though.

    ReplyReply
  • Chad

    Then a K.

Hey, for what it’s worth, I’ve been to three games this year, and Dunn has had 2-homer games in two of those contests.

I need to get up to Cincy more often.

EE hit that ball very hard, but he’s out. I feel confident that he’s coming around.

Obviously Gonzalez didn’t have much a jump.

For some reason, the Brewers went with a shift against Adrian Gonzalez (that dude is GOOD, btw). He laid down a really pretty bunt down the 3b line for a hit.

So Freel has succeeded in killing himself.

Freel is unconscious on the field. This doesn’t look good.

    ReplyReply

    Freel hasn’t moved at all.

    ReplyReply

Scary. I always thought Freel would hurt one of the other players instead of himself. At least he’s breathing.

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

    He is breathing though.

The collision didn’t look that bad.

Don’t worry, Chris W. You’ll have all summer off, and the rest of us will be working.

I’d say he initially was unconscious. Add a concussion and just being sure about the spinal cord.

Derrick Turnbow emailed JoeSportsFan and wants to know how he wasn’t #1 on that list!

And Willie McGee is the all-time #1 IMO

How did Majewski not make that list above? He’s scary-looking.

    ReplyReply
  • RagTag

They are immobilizing Freel and carting him off. Very scary, but we can all hope that it’s just precautionary. He hasn’t moved much, though.

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

I think Freel is okay. It is all the precautionary stuff that you see in a NFL game. It looked like he moved his arms which is a good thing.

    ReplyReply
  • Ben

Man, you never see this in baseball. I guess if we ever expected to see it, we expected Freel to be involved.

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

    Freel made the catch.

    ReplyReply
  • RagTag

Yeah, he was moving his arms a little, but he wasn’t moving anything else that I saw.

    ReplyReply
  • Jimmy James

I am at work so I will have to wait until I get home to see it. Sounds bad.

If Freel is out for any period of time, we had better get Josh Hamilton back to Cincinnati in a hurry!

    ReplyReply
  • renbutler

    I guess it’s an out!

I thought I saw the ball roll out after Freel landed. He might have had the ball long enough for an out anyway. However, I swear that when Hopper first reached Freel, he subtly grabbed the ball and placed it in the glove.

I still remember when he wiped out that old woman in LA. Maybe she will send him a get well card.

Lohse looks stronger after the break. Quick strikeout, then two quick strikes on the next batter.

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

Agreed on Hamilton. Get him some Pepto Bismol and on the field. Maybe Jay Bruce makes a temporary jump to the bigs.

    ReplyReply
  • Ben

I still am not sure how he got hurt so bad. Didn’t look like Hopper hit him very hard, and didn’t look (to me) like his head hit the ground very hard.

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

If they only win one game this week it had better be today for Farney’s little buddy.

    ReplyReply
  • RagTag

I want Jay Bruce to make a permanent jump to the bigs.

If he keeps playing like he has, he’ll be ready before we know it.

That crash didn’t really look that bad, but they were sure concerned about Freel.

George Grande just set the record for saying “little guy.”

To try to lighten the mood…

Since Willie McGee was mentioned above, I thought I’d pass along a story. When I was younger and Trivial Pursuit first came out, they had a sports edition. (They may still have this, I dunno.)

Anyway, one of the questions was “This MLB outfielder is nicknamed “E.T.” because of his resemblance to the movie alien.”

The answer, of course, was McGee. I always thought that question was unneccesarily mean, but my brothers and I thought it was hilarious at the time.

I wanna know why Griffey and Valentine did not start the day, they both KILL Snell. Narron is a moron. I understand Griffey needs a day off but not against Snell and during this horrific homestand, and if you want to play Hopper give Freel or Dunn the day off. Dunn (can’t hit Snell), I mean did he ignore the stats today??

    ReplyReply
  • RagTag

Well, Dunn just doubled into the corner. Let’s hope EE can get him in.

    ReplyReply
  • RagTag

Wild pitch, Dunn at third with one out. EE HAS to get him in.

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

I don’t think Griffey should ever sit at home. Let him sit on the road. The fans come to see him.

    ReplyReply
  • RagTag

And he does! Single scores Dunn, 3-0 Reds.

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

The Freel situation may delay the Narron firing.

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

As much as I want to see Narron fired, we have to see a real replacement this time not another “hand it over to the bench coach” promotion.

    ReplyReply
  • Chad

Well, then Narron may as well stay, because I think there is no chance that Bucky Dent isn’t the replacement.

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

Listening to Welch’s discussion on the Saarloos move. He made the statement that Saarloos didn’t pitch any worse than Milton or Lohse recent outing. I think not getting anyone out would be considered worse.

    ReplyReply
  • Y-City Jim

Bucky is just more of the same. If the attitude is going to change then you have to bring in someone with a different attitude. That’s why Florida flourished when McKeon took over. Bucky is a Narron clone just as Narron was a Miley clone. Everyone on this roster has accepted losing.

    So satisfying . . .

Lohse delivered exactly what the team needed in the midst of this no-days-off schedule, and then some. Thank goodness.

Man, Edwin can really pick it. Harness his arm and he’s Gold-Glove caliber. I hope he can keep it up at the plate, too, and bring back some of that life he had in his bat last year.
