Is ‘Baseball Tonight’ Relevant?

This guy breaks it down and says “no.” I definitely agree – I haven’t been able to watch that show, or much of anything else on ESPN in three years (the sole exception being that NFL breakdown show with Jaworski).

Thoughts?

I concur … It’s hard to watch … I’ll have it on at night, but I literally fall asleep to it because there’s nothing compelling to keep me up to watch. I used to put it on to catch a score, but now will just leave ESPNews on instead.

The firing of Harold Reynolds left a huge hole. Fernando Vina might know what he’s talking about, but with his soft, monotone voice, he puts me to sleep. I understand why Gammons isn’t on any longer, but there are plenty of baseball ‘insiders’ within the network to put on in his place like Buster Olney, Tim K., Jayson Stark.

Steve Phillips is just an idiot. It’s no wonder why he’s no longer a GM.

Personally, I’d rather listen to “The Show” on XM radio with Kevin Kennedy and Rob Dibble. Great baseball talk and let’s of entertainment.

I never watch anymore and I used to watch every night. Thanks to the Extra Innings package I don’t need to watch it to get Reds highlights. When the Reds game is over I usually switch to another game.

The best way to watch BBTN is to DVR it and then fast forward through most of it.

I like it better than sportscenter. i get all baseball and dont have to deal with hockey, soccer, and arena football highlights

I agree losing Gammons hurts a lot. I never really had a problem with Kruk because he does say his opinion and he doesn’t care what people think even if he sounds dumb. And Phillips has to go. It is a good thing Gammons is no longer on there because when Phillips traded Kazmir Gammons basically said it was one of the worst trades ever.

The biggest problem with Baseball Tonight is the lack of information about teams other than the Yankees and Red Sox. I will even throw that they talk too much about the Cubs as well. The Cubs and Red Sox have 1 world series between them in the last hundred years basically and yet they are talked about all the time.

Last year the team of the year was the Detroit Tigers. Everything worked for them last year and they were a great team. They were never higher than the 3rd game shown.

ESPN is the network for Yankees, Red Sox, Notre Dame, Dallas Cowboys, i can’t think of much else. haha

  • I absolutely loathe the program anytime their is a Yankee/Red Sox matchup. They analyze that game for a half hour and won’t show any other highlights that fall short of a triple play from any other game.

The entire ESPN baseball commentary network is only relevant if you are a fan of a team in the north east, otherwise you might as well just surf the net for your analysts and highlights.

Kruk “calls is like he sees it,” but is so blatantly wrong most of the time, there’s no point to it. I could listen to some dingleberry on a bar stool if I just wanted to hear nonsense screamed at 200 decibels. (The yelling – oh, please God stop all the yelling on ESPN).

I feel like I outgrew the show a few years ago . . . probably thanks to the internet. Just like I outgrew the stats listings in the local Sunday paper in favor of the glorious Wednesday sports section of USA Today, which eventually was replaced with cable TV coverage, which has now been replaced by blogs and the www.

I have always enjoyed BT, but the show has become just like ESPN a whore for the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox. To a mild point they acknowledge the existance of the New York Mets and the two LA teams and if Bonds hits a homer then SF is mentioned. But it is a show for those fans. It is a shame that other teams are left out in the cold.
