Free Edwin Encarnacion!

As noted below, and elsewhere, Edwin Encarnacion is hitting the ball at AAA. How long do the Reds leave him there while starting stiffs like Juan Castro on the big league club?

  • Read the Enquirer this morning, the Reds sound like they’ve written him off to me: “If it’s a month from now and he’s playing well and improving, it’s a good thing for him.”, Narron says.
The article finishes by saying, “The Reds don’t want to call up Encarnacion for a brief stint, like the one Jeff Keppinger got while Aaron Harang was on the bereavement list.”

Those are very strange statements. Treating Edwin Encarnacion like Jeff Keppinger is just dumb. But if they’re happy with the way things are going, and with at 480 OPS at 3b, who am I to argue. I’m just a stats geek and roto foof.

How is he fielding in Louisville? Isn’t that one of the reasons he was sent down in the first place?

  • Classic example of selling low. This always happens around the league—a team sends a kid down when he’s struggling only to miss out on half his hot streak production because they’re slow to react. Cubs did the same thing with Rich Hill last year. It’s all too clear Narron has a serious case of redass for E2, but he’s still the best you got.

The Indians are happy they stuck with Jhonny Peralta after a long, concerning sophomore slump in 2006.

  • He’s made 3 errors, 2 in one game…interesting about Narron saying he’s working on his defense b/c the Reds said he was working on his defense up here too…so what can he accomplish in Louisville that he couldn’t up here?

  • The man’s a first baseman, I tell you. They are trying to pound this square peg into their round hole.

He’s only 23. Why are you so sure he can’t improve? (I’m seriously asking – something about his throwing motion? Some other quirk?)

  • The Reds are ridiculous. I have some good ideas…. take your third baseman and send him to AAA to work on defense with coaches who theoretically aren’t as good as your coaches in the majors then say its for his bat as well despite the fact he had OPS’d over .800 for the 10 game stretch prior to that.

Then lets take the best first base prospect in baseball and start him in left field for 3 games in a week.

Awesome. I hate the Reds sometimes, this being one of those times.

  • If EE will be your first baseman, it makes a little sense to see if Votto can play another position. Dunn and Jr won’t be around forever and it doesn’t hurt to see what the kid can do in the OF once in a while. Not that unusual for outfielders to play first and vice versa. If EE can play the corners and Votto is good for OF/1st I’m good with that.
