Last night it was the bullpen, tonight it will be the lack of offensive discipline and Eric Milton, yet another reminder of the horrible decisions Jim Bowden made. It’s something different every day with this team.
Jimmy, that reminds me of something I saw in a movie the other night. An old British woman was remembering her father’s obsession with some soccer team. She said something like:
“He loved them. I don’t ever remember him getting a single moment of pleasure out of it, though.”
I just got home, but was Milton pitching well enough to justify getting the AB in that crucial situation? Norris Hopper, a pure contact guy, would’ve been a good choice there. I know it worked out, but that doesn’t make it the right move.
he only threw 87 pitches. I understand it’s Milty, so he’s always dangerous out there, but he hadn’t given up much since the third. they couldn’t have left him in to finish the 6th? he’s due up next inning. count me off the narron bandwagon.
With Everett and Ausmus up, I would have preferred that Milton stay in to at least save one reliever. But it’s hard to second-guess any removal of Milton, especially with his record of tiring (as Marty says) RIGHT NOW.
what’s his deal? who gets tired that fast? he’s not the youngest pitcher in the league, but he’s not exactly a blue hair either. maybe he needs to take a multi-vitamin or something.
Building a bullpen is the easiest job a GM has (except maybe finding average-hitting corner OFs). I’d feel a lot better if our own GM hadn’t failed (so far) at this “easy” task for two seasons running now.
i just looked at the standings for the first time in a while, and had to post something. i just figured it’s early, so we’ll lose a few, but holy crap, we’re 9 games out already. NINE.
granted the brewers don’t lose, and maybe that will change at some point, but i can’t believe the lack of urgency coming from management. i’d like to see some stats on how many teams that were 9 games out at any time during a season made the playoffs. you can’t let yourself slip like that.
Oh, I meant to post this observation last night when I noticed it, but age and memory being what it is….
I noticed that on the lineup cards in the Astro dugout last night that Moeller was listed as available for the Reds. His name was written in on the top of the list. Apparently, no one has seemed to notice that he is no longer on the club.

“We’ll call him…..Wandy!!!”
Stop by my place and leave a comment reds fans. I am tired of this team right now, but I’m liveblogging the game @ my listed link.

This is already looking like it’s going to be a long night.
THat’s why Edwin is so frustrating. Mental mistake followed by Gold Glove caliber play.
A-Gon is bunting. He’s our best power hitter! I don’t want him bunting!
Anyone notice that Adam Dunn’s batting average is up around .270 this year? And has anyone noticed that his defense is much improved?
You’d think that Marty would be heaping the praise on him. But no, he still strikes out too much for most people.
Damn. I just looked at the standings. I didn’t realize we were already eight games out of first!
Milton’s in trouble yet again here in the third.
This is a recording.
There’s another run…4-0.
But two of the outs that inning were absolute frozen ropes. These guys are hitting it off Milton like it’s batting practice.
Just think, if Milton gives up a bunch of runs, the bullpen will come in! Woo-hoo!
that’s why we keep him on the roster. he’s the only member of this team who can actually lay down a bunt!
wow. small ball works.
Small ball’s great, but it doesn’t help us much when we’re down 4 runs. I’ll take anything I can get, though!
come on, Conine. tie this so Milton can give up 3 more.
Conine is old enough to be my dad.
He hits better than my dad, though.
Is anyone else a little weirded out that Conine is hitting cleanup?
Damn. I just looked at the standings. I didn’t realize we were already eight games out of first!
At least it’s Milwaukee up there and not St Louis already.
Yeah, but the way Milwaukee is playing, no one will catch them!
strange that gonzo isn’t, with his 7 homers and .922 OPS.
Yeah, Junior, Dunn, and Hamilton on this team, and 59 year old Jeff Conine is hitting cleanup.
Aaaah, he’s been alright this year, though. Guess I won’t complain too much.
Yeah, don’t forget Gonzo!
Can Milton really go through an inning without someone reaching base???
No. There’s a double with two outs.
Crap.
you’ve got to throw strikes to wandy
C’mon, Dunn….hit a three run homer to tie it.
If anyone can do it with bases empty, it’s Dunn.
Last night it was the bullpen, tonight it will be the lack of offensive discipline and Eric Milton, yet another reminder of the horrible decisions Jim Bowden made. It’s something different every day with this team.
Dunn with a double!!! I thought he was going to try to get three bases.
I love this team like crazy, but they sure are frustrating sometimes.
Jimmy, that reminds me of something I saw in a movie the other night. An old British woman was remembering her father’s obsession with some soccer team. She said something like:
“He loved them. I don’t ever remember him getting a single moment of pleasure out of it, though.”
Tell me about it.
Ha!
True, true.
Milton finally does something right!
Milton helps his cause… Of course, he hurts his cause everytime he throws the ball…
I just got home, but was Milton pitching well enough to justify getting the AB in that crucial situation? Norris Hopper, a pure contact guy, would’ve been a good choice there. I know it worked out, but that doesn’t make it the right move.
“Was Milton pitching well enough to justify getting the AB…”
If there was ever a rhetorical question, that was it! When does Milton ever pitch well enough to justify anything?
Hurrah for Griffey!
Milton in line for the WIN! (until the 8th inning anyhow)…
Go Griffey!
It’s great to see Griffey hit homers.
Junior ! 5-4 Reds.
Wow nice play by Ensberg.
he only threw 87 pitches. I understand it’s Milty, so he’s always dangerous out there, but he hadn’t given up much since the third. they couldn’t have left him in to finish the 6th? he’s due up next inning. count me off the narron bandwagon.
Griffey needs to have a better year this year than last to remind people he used to be better than Bonds.
With Everett and Ausmus up, I would have preferred that Milton stay in to at least save one reliever. But it’s hard to second-guess any removal of Milton, especially with his record of tiring (as Marty says) RIGHT NOW.
that’s going to be tough if Bonds hits 100 homers this year, which I think he’s about on pace to do.
what’s his deal? who gets tired that fast? he’s not the youngest pitcher in the league, but he’s not exactly a blue hair either. maybe he needs to take a multi-vitamin or something.
I wouldn’t be swinging at jack right now. wandy has thrown 106 pitches. he’s going to make mistakes if you force him to throw strikes.
nice work hopper. with wandy due up next inning, we’re either going to make them use a reliever to get one out or make a pitcher hit.
I think it’s going to be a great thing for baseball when A-Rod (or anyone else) beats Bonds’ homerun record. Better yet if Bonds never makes it.
Salmon in for the 7th.
Does anyone have any clue what Narron will do with the 8th? I have no clue whatsoever (and I don’t think Narron does, either).
Can Salmon go two innings?
I’m going to say, no.
Wow, the bullpen blew a lead. I can’t believe it.
I quit.
You gotta be schotting me. Effing Berkman. Again.
That wasn’t even that bad a pitch. He just put wood on it and BLAM – out to LF.
no one kills the reds like berkman (excepting oswalt of course)
I walk his ass every time up. At least against RHP.
Though he did go 1.2 in his last outing
Berkman kills the Reds again.
The 8th matters less now, Chris.
why isn’t Salmon pronounced like the fish? I love salmon.
I love that Grande knows the pitcher’s name is pronounced “Sal-mun,” but he just can’t help himself from calling him “Sam-mon.”
Just like “Beez-e-oh.”
Have they ever gotten Berkman out?
Tom Hume is in his 27th season in the organization as a player or coach…in 2006 he served as interim pitching coach while Vern Ruhle received treatment for cancer…was the staffs bullpen coach the previous 10 seasons and in 2007 returns to that position…was named bullpen coach in January 1996.
I’m just sayin’.
maybe there’s room for him in the booth or something.
That tubby guy is playing pretty darn well. Hope our cleanup man can do it.
I love it – Griffey draws two consecutive pickoff throws over at first.
Might be a good spot for a slugging lefty batter, if you have one on the bench. Just sayin’
Conine with the hit. Goonzalez up.
come on dunn. you’re due for a clutch hit. it’s been since like…well…ever
my bad. misread the lineup.
i guess I could have waited two pitches to post my correction.
There haven’t been any chances for big hits lately. The bullpen keeps blowing it.
He homered against this dude last week, right?
Grande just said that Miller’s friends “come up from the river” to watch him play in Cincinnati.
Dunn hanging in there, but looks like Miller’s getting to him tonight.
Whiffffffff
what a surprise. what have you done for me lately, dunn? 3ks against a relatively weak set of pitchers tonight.
Did strike 3 even start in the zone?
Dunn’s driven in 7 runs this month, Andy. He’s good. Miller just did a good job of pitching. Pounding him inside, then a slider away.
This is Coffey’s 5th outing since Thursday. Maybe a little rest would be in order at some point?
Rest, maybe, but confidence is needed too.
It’s amazing what a far cry the current bullpen is from the Nasty Boys.
stormy strikes again. he’s a soft-tossing doughball.
The Reds have hit Wheeler pretty good so far this year…need at least two runs with the top of the order due.
What are you going to do about the bullpen, call up a AAA starter and see if he can do it, trade for Byung Jung Kim?
There’s one…can Griffey come up huge…again?
I’d like to see a replay on that grounder called foul. Looked like Berkman could of touched it when it was fair.
Ugh, Conine, that was one of the ugliest swings ever.
Is that 2 games in a row ending with a backword k?
Another bullpen disaster.
If the starter doesn’t pitch a complete game, the Reds probably won’t win. It’s become that simple unfortunately.
Yeah, and unfortunately, if the starter isn’t Harang or Arroyo, they’ll probably still lose.
But I would rather have good starters and bad relievers than the other way around. Relievers should be easier to groom or aquire in the offseason.
ummmmmm…well, 4 months to the NFL…
I feel like Bill Murray in Groundhog Day. Will this never end?
You’re right, Brad.
Building a bullpen is the easiest job a GM has (except maybe finding average-hitting corner OFs). I’d feel a lot better if our own GM hadn’t failed (so far) at this “easy” task for two seasons running now.

we’re in last place.
nine games out before the middle of May. Great.
