Freel

I was wondering if Ryan Freel’s struggles had begun when he signed his contract extension (announced on April 16).

He’s definitely played poorly since the signing:

14 for 55, 4 BB, 6 K, 1 SB, 2 CS, .255 , .317 , .309, 626 OPS

The problem is, he was just as lousy before the signing:

9 for 37, 6 BB, 11 K, 4 SB, 2 CA, .243, .349 , .297, 646 OPS

Doesn’t mean anything, other than Freel doesn’t appear to be pressing due to this contract. Hell, I wonder if he even remembers that he signed it.

Freel is not the only possible lead off man on this team. Why hasn’t Jer-Jer tried Gonzo there – he could be a Ricky Henderson style of no 1. guy…

I know everyone loves Freel, but he frustrates the hell out of me. He isn’t patient enough, and when he does get on base, he gets thrown out at second. He gets terrible jumps and gets thrown out far too much for a “stolen base threat”.

  • But he “plays the game the right way”.

Did it ever occur to anyone that maybe, and most likely, not running on his own? That he’s being told to run?

Nobody’s ever forced – if you don’t get a jump, you don’t go. And in this day and age, I don’t think anybody gets a “go” sign – they get a green light. Finally, does anything we know about Freel make us think someone needs to tell him to do wild and crazy things?

And yet just a couple of nights ago Griffey said he looked over and couldnt believe that he was being told to go… he didn’t say he was given the green light, he said he was being told to go. Doesn’t matter tho, I’ll take Freel’s aggressiveness on the paths, in the field, anyday. I’d hate to see how laid back this team would be without him. Him AND his 2 out rbi’s.

  • Both of those 2-out RBI have done a lot for this team’s 13-17 records.

He may not be the prettiest lead-off man but he is what he is…aggressive at the plate and on the paths.
