AAA
27 year old Tyrell Godwin went 2-4 with a double and 3 RBI. His numbers for the year are .250/.278/.365. 26 year old Mike Gosling pitched 6 innings, giving up 4 runs (all earned) on 6 hits, 2 walks and struck out 3. He gave up 2 home runs. These were the first runs that Gosling had given up, and this was his third start. His ERA is now 2.25 and his WHIP is 1.19. 26 year old Brad Salmon (1999-21) also gave up his first runs of the season, giving up 3 hits and 2 runs (all earned) in 2/3 of an inning, raising his ERA to 3.00. Salmon has struck out 7 in 6 innings and has yet to issue a walk.
AA
26 year old OF Jay Garthwaite went 2-2 with 2 doubles and 2 walk. On the season he’s hitting .244/.326/.366. 23 year old Ty Pelland threw 4 innings, giving up 4 hits, 5 runs (earned) with 3 walks and 6 K’s. His record is 0-2 and his ERA is 4.00. 25 year old RH reliever, Carlos Guevara (2003-7) threw 2 innings of scoreless relief, giving up 1 hit, while striking out 5. He’s struck out 15 in 11 2/3 innings. I don’t understand why he and Calvin Medlock (2002-39) are repeating the year at Chattanooga.
High A
The Reds had their 6 game winning streak snapped, but 24 year old RH starter Carlos Fisher (2005-11) threw another gem for the Reds, 6 IP 3 H 0 R 2BB 11K, lowering his ERA to .36 and his WHIP is .8 through 4 starts. He’s allowed 1 earned run in 25 innings. 24 year old C Craig Tatum (2004-3) was 2-3, raising his season numbers to .261/.261/.435. I believe that Tatum is the best catcher in the Reds farm system. He’s a year behind where he probably should be after missing most of the ‘05 season with an injury. 24 year old BJ Szymanski (2004-2) was 2-3, raising his numbers to .213/.315/.340.
Low A
21 year old Denis Phipps went 3-5 and drove in two runs. On the season, the RF is hitting .314/.352/.373. 21 year old SS Chris Valaika (2006- 3rd round) extended his hitting streak to 11 games going 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. He’s hitting .458/.491/.646, leading the MWL in OBP, average (by 80 points) and is 4th in SLG. If there is any concern about Valaika right now, it’s his 3BB in 48 AB. 22 year old Drew Stubbs (2006-1) had his 11 game hitting streak broken. On the season he’s hitting .346/.404/.442.
21 year old RHP Jordan Smith (2006-6) gave up 6 earned runs on 8 hits and 2 walks in 2 2/3 innings, raising his ERA to 5.68 after three starts. 22 year old Misheal DeJesus threw 4 scoreless innings of relief striking out 4, lowering his ERA to 4.22 after 5 appearances. He’s struck out 11 batters in 10 2/3 innings.

Carlos Fisher and Jay Bruce really need to be in Chattanooga and soon.
I don’t know if I’m ready to say that after 2 1/2 weeks, especially for a pitcher. I don’t think I’d promote anyone in less than 4-6 weeks…seems like it would take the “streaks” out of the equation.
Doug, have you heard whether Milton Loo has showed up yet in Sarasota?
Bill, since you know more about these minors dudes than I, could Valaika project out as a 3b?I thought I heard somewhere his range ain’t all that spiffy but I could be wrong.
Bill,
no word on Loo yet, but I know some people and I will ask and see if they have seen him around. Also, I think both Bruce and Fisher should have started in AA, and being that they are performing very well so far it just pushes the point forward to me.
Mr Redlegs,
Valaika isnt a very rangy guy and probably will play 2B or 3B if he makes it to the majors.
Thanks, Doug. Guess I heard right.
Bill,
Just talked with a guy I know who is the dad of one of the kids in extended spring training and he said that they are expecting Milton Loo the first week of May. Hopefully thats about right.
