Best Reds Hitters of the ’90’s

At least according to The Baseball Savant.

It’s an interesting list…nothing earth-shattering or really surprising, but worth of a peek.

Hmm..I think I’ll politely disagree with The Baseball Savant

It’s a close call between Davis, Larkin, and Mitchell for who was the best Reds hitter of the 90s.

    Eric Davis 6th?

Only 15 Reds hitters with 800+ PA had an OPS above average in the 90s. Here they are in order but with the Baseball Savant’s ranking in ()
    Mitchell(5), Davis(6), Larkin(1), Casey(8), Sanders(1), Young, Sabo(4), Morris(3), Braggs, O’Neill(7), Taubensee(9), Roberts, Greene(10) and Doran

I think the biggest problem with the list is D Young not on the list but W Greene is.

My top 10 Reds HITTERS of the 90s
    Mitchell
    Larkin
    Davis
    Sanders
    Casey
    Sabo
    Taubensee
    Morris
    Young
    Duncan

O’Neill and Greene are out from their list and I think Young and Duncan were better hitters.

  • There is no way that I can rate someone as highly as you do Mitchell. He was only a Red for 2 1/2 season and the most games he played for the Reds was 95 in any one season.
I have the same issue issue with Davis, he only played 3 seasons in the ’90’s for the Reds and the most games played were 129.
But both could hit, no doubt about it.

But the article was about how good of a hitter they were and who were the best hitters, not who was the most productive player or move valuable or best players. Mitchell was clearly a GREAT, GREAT hitter, one of the best of our time I think. Sure, he was never healthy, bad on defense, and couldn’t keep his focus. But one of the better Reds hitters of the 90s. Hell yea.

During mitchell’s playing time, from 84-98 the top OPS vs league average for players with at least 4500 PA

Thomas, Bonds, McGwire, Bagwell, Jr, E Martinez, Belle, Walker, McGriff, J Gonzalez, MITCHELL, and Sheffield

Eric Davis is the first Red to show up during that time frame and he was 22nd

best Reds player in the 90s was clearly Larkin but best hitter?

It is interesting that 3 of the better Reds players during the 90s had MAJOR problems staying healthy.
