A reason to root for Saarloos

From the Enquirer:

BARRY ZITO

MB: Sure he’s filthy rich thanks to his new contract with the Giants. But it doesn’t make his charity work less significant than yours or mine. Zito’s “Strikeouts for Troops” program has raised more than a half-million dollars for wounded troops being treated at Walter Reed and other military hospitals. He recruited teammates, including new Red Kirk Saarloos, to pledge donations based on on-field performance. See strikeoutsfortroops.org

I wasn’t a huge Saarloos fan before reading this, but I am now. I hope he wins that 5th starter spot.

  • …I’m trying to decide whether it’s inappropriate to make a quip about Saarloos’s amazingly low strikeout rates and how that’ll help keep his obligations to this organization manageable. … But I think it is inappropriate, so I’ll refrain. :) -j
