I don’t think Votto and Bailey are in similar positions at all. Bailey is not going to start with the Reds because they don’t want his arm to fall off. I don’t see any reason why Votto can’t be on the team. I like Hatteberg, but really, why would you not put your best team on the field? The Reds could really use another power hitter in the lineup.
I agree, which is why I noted that the analogy by Fay seemed a bit forced. I guess one could argue that Bailey and Votto are similarly regarded by the Reds, in the sense that the Reds don’t really want either one on the Opening Day roster, but they are both in the organization’s long-term plans.
Frankly, I’d like to see Votto playing 1B to start the season. That isn’t a slam on Hatteberg; he had a great season last year, and I didn’t argue with the contract he was given. But let’s face it, the chance that he will repeat last season’s numbers is slim. At his age, it’s only reasonable to expect a sharp decline from this point out.
If it’s determined that Votto is ready to face major league pitching — and I’ll have to trust the Reds’ judgment on that one, since I don’t know the answer — then I think Votto needs to be up here. He could be this team’s 1B for the next seven or eight years.
Joey Votto could and would outproduce Scott Hatteberg this year if the Reds gave him the chance…. they wont do that though.
Just a rough approximation here, I went over to fangraphs and checked out the projections for the two players in question and made the averages of them and here is what the two players project to do at the major league level in 2007.
Scott Hatteberg -.267/.358/.393 OPS-.751
Joey Votto – .259/.335/.438 OPS-.773

Plus, Votto is 23, not 20.
