At the movies — Open Thread

Because it’s the off-season, and there isn’t much going on, I’m going off-topic for a moment. I’ve seen two surprisingly good movies recently: Rocky Balboa and We Are Marshall.

Anyone else seen them? Both were very entertaining.

And has anyone else seen any other good films lately? It’s an open-thread for movie discussion!

  • I saw Rocky over the holidays also and really enjoyed it. But IMO, you have to be a Rocky fan to “get it”. And the fight was probably the worst part of the movie, not the climax as it usually was in other Rocky movies.

I have a friend that was attending Marshall at this time and she absolutely loved this movie, but readily admits that she is biased. I’ve seen both good and bad reviews on this one.

What really surprised me about Rocky was that the tone of the film really stayed true to the original films. I didn’t expect that. Heck, after watching the trailer, I thought it was going to be a terrible, cobbled-together mess…but I knew I had to see it. It’s Rocky, after all!

Turns out it was really good.

As for Marshall, you are correct — while Rocky’s reviews are generally pretty good, We Are Marshall has been getting mixed reviews. All I can say is that I enjoyed it, and everyone I know who has seen it thought it was very good. That includes men and women.

  • I agree with what I’ve heard Stallone say, it was the way he wanted to end the series. Rocky V was AWFUL…

This movie was nostalgic, w/o being hokey, at least until the fight. Then it’s pretty hokey.

I haven’t seen either of those, but I did just see The Departed. It was a fantastic movie. The only thing that bothered me was the majority of the audience laughing everytime someone was killed. Nothing makes me fear the future more than moments like those.

  • Anyone see The Good Shepherd? That’s one I wanted to see…but alas, it never came to the little theatre in my area…

“We Are Marshall” is a very sad look into a college and their fans dealing with death. It is especially hard to deal with for one parent, one coach, one player and one cheerleader.
