Reds Claim Livingston Off Waivers

The Reds were awarded 24 year old LH SP Bobby Livingston off waivers after Major League Baseball nullified the Devil Rays claim and immediate trade of him to the Phillies. Livingston was hit pretty hard in AAA last season, and then pounded in the AFL. He’s your prototypical soft tossing, strike throwing lefty. He will be given a chance to compete for the 5th spot in the Red’s rotation, but I believe he will finish far behind Belisle and Ramirez and open the season in Louisville.

Livingston, by the way, takes the roster spot of Miguel Perez, who was non-tendered, and then resigned to a minor league contract and invited to spring training. The roster is again full at 40.

  • I like this pickup…Livingston is 24, has decent minor league numbers, was a starter in the minors.

I think it’s the kind of flier that’s worth taking.

I agree – not bad. His minor league numbers in A and AA ball are very good. He just hasn’t been good at AAA or the majors. (I know, you could say this about a lot of players.)

I saw an interesting note on Livingston from Baseball Prospectus a year or two ago – at the point when his minor league numbers still looked great. They said, “Who will be right on this guy, the numbers or the scouts?” Apparently the scouts saw struggles coming, since he doesn’t throw very hard.

His K/BB ratios were good til last year though, and also low HR numbers.

Who knows… all in all he seems like a cheaper, healthier, younger, but less good version of Brandon Claussen to me.

PCL is a hitter’s league traditionally, and you’d have to take Tacoma park factors into account, too. If he has options left, not a bad guy to have in AAA depth.
