The new uniforms: my opinion

I know I disagree with Bill, but I wanted to say a few words about the new uniforms unveiled at Redsfest this weekend:

Awesome. Simply awesome.

They’re simple, and classy, and they hearken back to Reds teams of the past. The classic, all-red cap is back, and the black is gone. Best of all, those terrible sleeveless jerseys are in the garbage. Those things were just ugly, and they never grew on me.

The new design, as Bob Castellini said, is meant to last. It’s a design, like the Yankees’ and Cardinals’ uniforms, that isn’t going to go out of style in a couple of years. Heck, even the alternate jersey is great, and I expect that I will be purchasing one of those soon.

I’m more enthusiastic about the new uniforms than I’ve been about anything the Reds have done in quite some time.

So, what do you think?

Some pictures of the new unis here and below the fold.

  • I think Denorfia is one ugly mofo.

The uniforms are great, though. I’m happy my solid red cap is relevant again. I never bought one with the black.

  • Love the new home unis, the road unis are uninspired, a poor mishmash of old (the font) and new (red belt, black trim hat). They should’ve referenced the big Red machine road unis from the early 70’s instead. I can’t tell from the pics, but is the running man a part of either look? If not, they dropped the ball big time. It’s the face of the brand (and kids love it). Heck, he should have his own Saturday morning cartoon. Still, I’m soooo glad to see the pinstripes and black go. We’re not the flippin’ Yankees, so don’t even go there. One final thought, why is the shade of ‘red’ they chose so orange-ish?? Something a tad deeper would be more rich, subtle. From a practical standpoint, vivid reds like this fade more readily too…..and then it looks gross.

nor the sleeveless. Thats a looks for the show cops, and beverly hillbillies, not baseball.

The road uniform is that traditional ugly plain version. I just wish the team made players wear their pant legs high.

I agree. As the oldest baseball franchise, founded in 1869 as the Red Stockings, the Reds, more than any team should show their red socks with pride.

So is my black road hat now a collectible? If so, let the bidding start at $150.

Awesome! Black undershirts with sleeveless uni’s… far the well. Good riddin’s. Maybe I’ll actually buy some reds merch now because hopefully it won’t be hideously ugly.

side note: I really hope manny doesn’t come here, trust me. Watching him here in boston, you don’t want him either.
