What do you think of Cliff Floyd as a possible free agent acquisition?
Yes, he’s been super-injury-prone, a risk for a team with Griffey and Freel already being counted on, but he’s only 34 and absolutely murdered the ball two years ago (.273, .358, .505, 863). I have no clue what the price would be, but it might be worth a 2-year, $12M “flier.” I suspect that if he had the choice, though, Krivsky would add right-handed power (or middle relievers, of course).
EDITED: Let’s make this a semi-open thread, to discuss potential free agent signings for the Reds. What do you prioritize as the #1 need? Who’s your favorite bargain free agent? Any chance Jason Schmidt leaves the West Coast?

A good bat, but I’d like to see a better fielder if they were to bring in an OF. Either him or Dunn would have to move to right, and a Dunn/Griffey/Floyd OF would be downright scary.
The problem is that the OF market is very thin. Lee and Drew are out of the question, leaving the cupboard pretty bare. I’m a fan of Dellucci, who plays a decent corner, gets on base and has some power (+360 OBP, +500 SLG last two years). He has severe platoon splits, so hit him versus righties and Freel/Deno against lefties.
If we are going for injury-prone outfielders, I’d much rather make a play at Shannon Stewart.
Stewart’s obviously better, but I don’t see him going for a discount.
I like Dellucci, but again, I bet he’s going to get 3 years, $25M from somebody.
Dellucci is good and 3-$25 might even be a bargain soon. Heck, if I throw a ball lefthanded in front of a scout tomorrow, I’d probably be worth 3-$12.
True, but he just turned 33. Not sure if a long-term, serious money investment is worth it or not. Dellucci’s such a strange case – I was a HUGE Dellucci guy back in the mid-90s, and he just never went anywhere, due to injuries and Phoenix’s inability to see where he fit in. He still has only 2 seasons with more than 400 plate appearances — do you think he’s a safe bet for an everyday spot? I’m pretty skeptical, if we’re talking about booking him in for three years.
I don’t see Delluci getting quite that much bc he’s better as a part-time player (he’s never had 500 ABs) and he’s never made close to that so far (950K last year). But this has been such a crazy offseason, so who knows. The Gary Matthews deal has to be the worst yet. He’s had one good season, one incredible highlight, and he’s 32 . . good luck with the next five years at 10 per.
Newcomer to this blog tho I have been reading bits and pieces for a few months. . . .
I keep reading on other Reds blogs that unless Dunn is traded (which some of you doubt he will be) the Reds must go right-handed. I agree. They just have too many lefties in their order already to be thinking about some of these people mentioned here.
Besides, Cliff Floyd and David Delucci ain’t exactly keeping up with The Jones (aka Cubs). Neither of these guys seem like sound investments even for one year as one of the three outfielders.
Shannon Stewart does have the Krivsky connection and his injuries could lower the price tag substantially.
Cincinnati Post reported that Krivsky is looking for a right hander at first base to platoon with Hatteberg. I would love to see Shea Hillenbrand be that guy. However, he probably wouldn’t sign just to be a part time player and his 5.8 million dollar contract last year will probably be increased in this FA market.
I’d obviously love to see a guy like Suppan but I don’t think that is going to happen given how well he did in the playoffs. But a guy who gives up 3 runs on 6 innings everytime out of the shoot would be a great 3rd arm.
If you can’t get Suppan, the next best arm for me is Lilly. I’d love to see what he could do outside the AL East.
Really there aren’t too many FAs to choose from, especially at the money which is floating around. Trades might be the way things work out.
I like the Lilly idea, should be affordable. Dellucci is also intriguing, he would probably be a good fit. I would just really like them to add a couple more arms. Pitching, pitching, pitching, pitching, please!!!
I agree with you, Dan. I would feel much better if we added a quality starter over any other position. I still feel that is our greatest need.
Could having Dick Pole make the Reds a player in acquiring a Greg Maddux? He also fits the Krivsky profile of old guy acquisitions.
Floyd is “only” 34? And injury-prone? In this market, he’s worth $40 mil at best.
I would prefer Dave Roberts.
Eduardo Perez would be an inexpensive 1B platoon option.
I would trade Adam Dunn and Freel for Tori Hunter. Whst do you think??
I also like the Eduardo Perez option. He’s a solid player who doesn’t break the bank.
Both Dunn and Freel for Hunter? No way. Need some pitching thrown into that deal.
One pitcher, some right-handed power, preferrably on the cheap. We’re looking for garage sale early Saturday AM finds. ’stros justs signed Corlos. WOuldn’t it be nice to have $12 million to throw at a bat.
I don’t think they’re will be any more important free agent signings. I do agree the next move will be a trade involving Dunn and Freel. After all we have Bubba to slot into the outfield somewhere.
I don’t put much into the Bubba Crosby signing. Crosby’s 30 years old and he’s played in just 205 games. He has a career 216 avg. and is a so-so fielder. Are we really wanting to part ways with Freel because Crosby is in town?
Not to say that trades won’t happen but the field of 35+ yr old relievers is wide open. I’m all for the $20 million 3 year deal Joe Borowski wants. Maybe we could follow that up with Arthur Rhodes, Roberto Hernandez, and Jose Mesa.
next time I’ll try to make the sarcasm drip a little more when I mention Bubba. Here’s the prediction Dunn and Freel for a middle tier closer and a somewhat solid but affordable outfield bat.
I like the speculation on Marc Lancaster’s blog about Tim Hudson.
