Is Adam Dunn going to Houston?
Apparently, Adam Dunn is salivating at the idea of playing for his hometown Astros. And yes, the Reds are throwing around the idea of trading him for pitching. So it’s something that I’m sure both teams will look into this winter.
What do you guys and gals think? Is Dunn headed out of town? What do you think of that possibility? I know what I think about it, but I’ll keep my comments to myself until I see what you think.

I think it’s kind of funny, that in my opinion there is no way that Adam Dunn will be a Red next year and the Red Sox fans are drooling over the idea of having him and his OPS in their lineup. Wow I am really afraid of what this team is going to turn into. I just pray it’s young hitters and not the old grizzled versions of players we have seen so far in the Krivsky era
In my 30 years as a Reds fan, I have been continuously amazed at our general inability to develop starting pitching consistently. Except for Rijo, Soto and 1-2 others, we have really not done a good job as this. As much as I love power and home runs, I think that we see how consistently the best pitching teams end up making it deep into the post-season. In 1990, unlike 75 and 76, the Reds had to rely on pitching and that is why the A’s went out in 4. All that being said, I don’t think we should just give away Dunn. We need a starting pitcher with a prove track record, plus a reliever and maybe another prospect, in return for him. I think that anything less would be foolish.
I hate to say it, but everything about Krivsky says that Dunn is gone. And in light of Krivsky’s other major deals, it’s highly questionable whether he’ll get full value for a player of Dunn’s abilities.
I’m still not convinced the Arroyo deal will turn out to be a good deal (yes, he had a great year) and THE trade was a Reds disaster. So, his track record for important deals is not exactly steller.
At this point I won’t be surprised if Kriv trades or doesn’t trade Dunn, but if he does I hope that he at least gets a fair deal. There is not a bumper crop of FA sluggers this year (Soriano and Lee are the only ones that come to mind), so this would be a seller’s market. I think Kriv now realizes that he got too little in return in The Trade and that he’ll drive a much harder bargain with Dunn – if it comes to that. But I wonder how much other teams will be willing to part with young SPs; teams are getting increasingly stingy with their young talent.
Where’s all the puffed up outrage about this? Apparently the good ol’ boy Dunn is getting a free pass while everyone crucifies Arroyo for the same wanderlust. Again, these guys are mercenaries. The idea of loyalty to an organization went out the window, oh, about thirty years ago.
He’s salivating so much he signed a 2 year deal with an option just last the winter.
i’m with minutia here with the
everything about Krivsky says that Dunn is gone
you mean like signing him long-term as his first act as GM.
his track record for important deals is not exactly steller based on the arroyo deal? wow, that’s harsh.
The original salivating post has no quotes from dunn in it, so he’s getting a free pass for doing nothing, yes. It’s just speculation.
As is the post about him going to boston, where some fan just talks about getting him, not even speculating on what they would give.
I maintain that Kriv should shop him, and if there’s a deal that makes the reds better, he should do it. Dunn is not untouchable, but he is the biggest producer on this team offensively and you can’t give that away. If The sox wanted to give up Papelbon and Hansen, it would be worth listening to. If they want to give up Mike Lowell, well, yeah.
We all know pitching and defense gets you to the playoffs. If we can get a good young starter and reliever for Dunn, then go for it, but not to Houston. RedSox, Tigers and Angels have pitching. I prefer winning with small ball, contact hitting, bunting, speed, sac flys. Dunn rarely connects on the outside pitch and the HR if often when the Reds are winning. If we get rid of Dunn, then ownership is going to have to spend some money to get Soriano or Lee.
I prefer winning with small ball, contact hitting, bunting, speed, sac flys.
That would be great, if someone was actually winning that way in this era.
I don\’t fault Dunn for \”wanting out,\” because as Minutia and Al noted, (unlike Arroyo) Dunn isn\’t directly quoted (\”I am salivating at the idea of going to Houston.\”).
That said, I\’d understand him a little bit. Compare:
Dunn: Never said anything bad about the team or city. Best friend is traded. Season goes into tank (both personally and team-wise). Is blamed for everything from global warming to tooth decay. Rumored to be traded. Allegedly \”salivating\” about heading to hometown.
Arroyo: Upset about being traded from old buddies. Pitches great. Beloved by fans. Toast of the city. Statues commissioned. Directly quoted about plans to head back to old team as soon as his contract is up.
Both are understandable, and mostly irrelevant. I was just a little disappointed by Arroyo\’s comments, and perplexed, since none of his 2004-05 buddies will be in Boston by the time he gets back.
I think it would be very foolish to trade Dunn to a team inside the division. There are other teams out there with a surplus of pitching besides the Astros. Dunn has nothing but upside left in his career and K would be constantly second guessed everytime the Reds faced the Astros. I think that if K is determined to trade Dunn he would be better served to trade him to the American League.
Totally agree with Chris’ comments on both small ball and Dunn. I’ll be damned if I’ll ever understand why so many people are so eager to blame Dunn for everything. Just don’t understand it!
Win with small ball? In GABP? Great idea. We can scratch and crawl (and, barf, get ‘em on, get ‘em over, and get ‘em in) to put 2 or 3 on the board and then give up a 3-run bomb to the other team’s 8 hole hitter to lose. You have to have some mashers in this ballpark to compete. Period.
With all of the Dunn bashers in this city, I hope you guys are happy when Dunn is hitting 600 bombs somewhere else and Denorfia, Hopper, and Freel are out starting outfield on September 14. That’ll be great. We can small ball our way to another 7-3 defeat.
As someone said above, if you can get value for Dunn (aka, Hansen, Delacarmen, and something or the other) then do it. But follow that up with Luis Gonzalez or someone else that can at least come close to Dunn’s 100 ribbies and 100 runs.
