According to John Fay (and last week, Lance McAlister):
Thom Brennaman could be named as soon as next week to join his father, Marty, in the Reds radio booth.
snip….
Because Thom Brennaman has heavy commitments to Fox Sports, he would have to miss a significant number of games.
Also on the broadcast front: There’s a possibility that Stewart could return in a television role. He would like to stay in the Cincinnati. FSN is broadcasting 145 games next year, up from 100.
I’m not a huge Thom fan and don’t understand why you’d hire someone that’s going to miss significant time. In other words, you’re going to have to hire 2 people…doesn’t make much sense to me, other than they see Thom as the replacement for Marty (and this is a way to keep Marty on-board).
UPDATE by Chad: Red Hot Mama thinks the whole idea is lame.

Why not hire Steve as the third guy, who could also do television on a rotating basis? The guy got a lot better and is now bearable, and dare I say sometimes enjoyable, to listen to. Unlike George Grande, whose corniness makes you want to throw something through the screen, Steve’s corniness is always unexpected and therefore funny. Like when he said stuff about “he’s only youman” yesterday after youman gave up a walk or something.
Personally, Stewart never won me over at all. I never have thought he added anything to the game, insight, excitement, nothing.
i read somewhere pretty recently that they were probably going to hire two people, an ex-player for color and a play by play guy to replace marty in a few years. Thom makes a lot of sense in that context.
Shouldn’t that headline read, “Brennamen“?
Ha! Plus that fits right in with the ‘corny’ theme, Chris.
I agree with Daedalus’ comment about Stewart. I grew to like the guy.
And I don’t have a problem with Thom Brennaman being brought in. He’s a competent broadcaster, and he’ll step in when Marty hangs it up in a few years. I’m fine with it.
In the meantime, keep Stewart around to fill in when Thom is with FSN, and to do television broadcasts as well. Win, win situation.
I agree. If George Grande decided to retire to grow grapes or something, I would wish him the best. Seems like an extremely nice man, but I just do not enjoy his style. (How’s that for starting the off-season on a diplomatic note?)
brennamen – love it!
I\’m curious to ask the Stewart fans…what do you think he brings to the broadcasts? I don\’t think I\’ve ever heard him show much excitement or any insight to the game, what are the positives of Steve Stewart?
Excellent choice. Nice to see Bob Castellini go after a quality replacement, not just the cheapest available. Makes good sense long term and what a great opportunity for dad and son to work together.
I can’t say I’m thrilled by the Thom Brennaman prognosis. Can’t we be a little more creative than running out and getting Marty’s son?
Stewart on TV makes sense. Does that mean Welch might be coming over to radio?
Hire someone who will absolutely irritate the heck out of Marty!
I’d be awfully surprised to see Welsh do radio. I just can’t see that happening.
Plus, he does an excellent job on television.
this is corny, lame and whatever sorry adjective you can throw in there
I liked Steve Stewart. He’s no HOF’er like Vin Scully or Ernie Harwell, but he’s good.
Just hope Thom’s not like his dad in his bashing of Dunn and harping on everything little thing that he doesn’t do just right.
Hey Marty … Baseball is a game of failure. You make an out 7 of 10 times, you’re a HOF’er. Just make an out 6 of 10 times, you’re a freakin’ legend.
He calls the game, listening to out of town broadcasts I’ve grown to appreciate SS
