Did Harang really need to complete the game tonight? He finished with 125 pitches and a three run lead. He’s pitched a lot (234) of innings this year. I hope he hasn’t been overworked.
I thought that too, especially when I saw the 125 pitchcount. But this was (possibly/likely) his last start of the year. Insert variant of oft-cited maxim, “He’s got all winter to rest.”
The devil’s advocate argument is that if the Reds miraculously force a 1-game playoff, Harang would almost certainly be the best candidate to start – on 3 days rest. It would have been better if the bullpen spelled him just a little bit at the end tonight.
Reds wouldn’t force a 1 game playoff would they if they are only tied with either Houston or St. Louis (just one of the two?) I believe the Reds hold the individual tie-breakers over both teams. Only if all three end up tied does that funky tie-breaker come into play….I think.
I was pretty sure that 1-game playoffs come into play if a playoff spot is at stake – i.e. the difference between making the playoffs and going home. If only playoff seeding is at stake (for example, if two teams tie at the top of the division, where one will be the wildcard and the other the division champ).
Two things on Harang working the ninth. He’s got all year to rest and he needed one more strikeout to lead the league this year. He got it in the bottom of the ninth.
Cardinals came from behind to win on a 3-run Scott F-ing Spiezio triple with two outs in the 8th. Cards win 3-2. Reds are now mathematically eliminated . It has been a fun ride this year everyone. Ret’s just root for a winning season and a productive offseason.

Oh no! Nothing on the 5-2 win that I see the Reds posted tonight?
Complete game for Harang. Stud.
And HOU lost to the Braves, 4-1. Unfortunately, STL now leads 8-3 over the Brewers in the 7th.
Hot-hitting LaRue is making a last bid to finish over the Mendoza line. 2-4 tonight, now .194 for the season.
I think he’ll need to go 2-4 or 3-9 (or better) to get up to .200 .
St. Louis up 10-4 now..but the Reds aren’t officially out even if the Cards win tonight…
STL wins 10-5. Reds elimination # down to 1 . . . best they can do is tie for the division. But they are also now just one game behind HOU, right?
Yes, just one game behind the Astros.
Let’s just sweep the Pirates and see what happens.
If there was a one game playoff, I presume it would be Tuesday since the Cards have to make up a game. Harang on three days rest?
