The dream lives on.
The Reds are only 3.5 games out of first. Did you know that? Well, of course you guys and gals knew it, but it’s still surprising, especially since September has been a disastrous month. Tonight, the Reds take on the Florida Marlins as they begin the final roadtrip of the season. Matt Belisle starts his first game of the season for the good guys.
Can the Redlegs make up 3.5 games in the standings with only six game left on the schedule. Well, probably not. But I’m telling you there’s a chance….
Discuss it here.

jerry playing small ball to start: single, bunt, sac fly, walk has first and third with dunn up and two down.
also playing idiot ball with clayton hitting second.
marty was busy ripping Ross, “this guy swings through so many pitches,” as Ross takes Dontrelle to the upper deck.
So youre telling me theres a chance?
Dumb and Dumber is one of the best movies ever.
Belisle dodges another bullet in the 2nd, but sounds like he’s laboring out there.
yeah, when he goes after guys he’s getting them out, but he’s having trouble throwing strikes.
Ross swings through, er, crushes another Dontrelle offering. 4 – 0
Ross jacks another! Shades of Taubensee’s ‘99.
Belisle v. Dontrelle. That’s almost as crazy a matchup as you can get. And it’s working!
Ross homers again! 4-0!
The Reds are 3½ out, but Houston is also still a game in front of them in 2nd place.
And the Reds are still 2 games under .500 . And they have Lohse and Belisle in the rotation. And Clayton is getting regular playing time…well, enough of that.
Sweet. Belisle pitches out of difficulty again Love that 5-4-3 doubleplay . . . 4-0 after 3.
Depressing . . a slightly above 500 September would have put us in the lead, thanks to the Cards’ free fall.
Where did this A-game come from? Denorfia now 3-3 after a leadoff double.
Nice to see Deno swinging the bat at the end of the year. Would like to see him up here f/t in ‘07 as a fourth OF.
Uh-oh. Franklin warming in the bullpen, and Marty thinks that because he’s throwing while the Reds are batting, Belisle is done for the night after 57 pitches, 3.0 IP.
Belisle almost got a double play there to get out of the fourth.
The Marlins haven’t scored yet, but Belisle is playing with fire.
5 walks now for Belisle in 3.2 IP. But only 2 hits allowed. We’re a long way from “pitching-to-contact,” baby.
Dangit, the other pitcher gets an RBI.
Willis singles on an 0-2 pitch. 4-1 Reds.
Ah, here comes Franklin. Maybe he’s the short reliever tonight, and he’ll be pinch-hit for in the bottom of the inning.
Franklin!?! Well it was a good game.
hopefully belise will have better control in his next start. He’s got decent stuff and i’ve always thought he might be able to turn it around and be an effective starter for us.
let’s see if franklin can get out of this.
101 pitches for Willis through 5.
Franklin living more dangerously than Belisle. Jam escaped, though. His spot due to lead off this inning. . . Narron, get a pinch-hitter out there.
How many 20-homer hitters do the Marlins have? It’s amazing.
Guess I shouldn’t be so amazed – Marlins have 4 20-HR guys, but they’re all right around the same number, and playing in their pitcher’s park doesn’t aid them.
Runner on second with one out. We need more runs, since the bullpen is now in the game.
Actually, I guess the bullpen has been in the game since the first pitch.
I love Royce Clayton.
What are Houston and St. Louis doing tonight?
5-1. I have a problem with asking a guy who’s 3-3 to sacrifice bunt, especially for Clayton, but regardless they got a run.
Houston winning comfortably, STL tied 1-1 with SD in the 4th.
Whoops, SD just scored a run, now 2-1 lead over STL in the 4th.
Franklin out of there . . . in favor of Majewski. Set ‘em up, knock ‘em down.
I see Majewski still does not believe in outs.
Why Majewski?
Terrific. Majewski out in favor of . . . who! Tell us, radio announcers – you are my window to the game!
Todd Coffey is in. Crucial with 2 runners in scoring position and one out.
All Hail Java Man!
Mmmmmm, that’s Good Coffey. Comebacker and a flyout, out of the mess. 5-2 Reds after 6.
Meanwhile STL up 3-2.
I had to go away for a bit, and looks like everyone else did too. 5-3 final, an improbable win for the Reds’ scattershot 5th starting spot.
Meanwhile:
Astros 7, Pirates 4, final.
Padres 6, STL 5 after seven innings.
SD adds another run in the eighth, 7-5 over STL.
Caught part of the StL game – Larussa left Carpenter out in the 7th when he looked really gassed. Surprising given how much Larussa subs out pitchers, but then again his bullpen has been very bad. Padres scored four in that inning, one more in the 8th off Wainwright. 122 pitches for Carpenter total. StL continues to impersonate the ‘64 Phillies.
Hoffman closes it out – 7-5 Padres. Astros are two back, good guys three back. Dare we dream?
Make that 1.5 and 2.5 games back.
Believe it or not – it ain’t over yet! The new park seems to have dulled the Cardinals mystic.
I’d give STL only an 83% chance of making the playoffs.
I’m rooting for that 1 of 6 outcome in a big way.
