Oh no. Not Carlos Zambrano again. The Cubs’ starting pitcher has had a couple of pretty good outings against the Redlegs this season (including last week, in Chicago).
For the Reds, we get Kyle Lohse, who has been disappointing in three of his last four starts after such a promising start for the Good Guys.
Discuss it here!

Not a good night for either starter. 5-4 Cubs in the third.
Earlier this afternoon, heavyweight Austin Kearns collided with Nick Johnson on a popfly, and Johnson lost that one. Speculation is a broken leg for the injury-prone 1b.
Nice. Reds already have committed three errors through three – though only one of the runs allowed is unearned. 5-4 Cubs after three.
I was worried that Phillips might have hurt his eye the other day on that groundball that hit him, but not looking too bad since he came back a couple days later. His 3-run homer was the key blow for the Reds so far.
There’s a homer for the opposing pitcher to knock Lohse from the box. An amazing 6 homers for Zambrano on the year. 6-4 Cubs.
There’s error #4. Wise, Olmedo, ValentÃn, and now Phillips on what could have been a dp grounder.
This may be about to get ugly. 3-0 count from Bray with the bases loaded.
Yep. Walk & 2-run single & another single, just like that it’s 10-4.
I’ve never seen a Reds team become as suddenly, absolutely, completely pathetic as this one.
Whoops, actually that second single was another error by Olmedo. So it continues to look even worse.
That’s 5 errors now in the game, tied for a season high.
I swear – Narron just might manage himself out of a job with this abomination of a “stretch run.”
Still only the top of the fourth. Oh this is awful.
I’m beginning to wonder if that may be correct, Chris. There’s been nothing but talk of overachievement, being better than expected, and on and on, but here we are with just a week to go and the team only has 2 more wins than last year’s edition. And that’s in a weak, weak league and division that was ripe for the taking.
Marty asks if anyone on the field for the Reds has not committed an error. Adam Dunn hasn’t, Marty! Sing his defensive praises!
Delirious.
Phillips gets picked off second base. In a 10-4 game.
Brennaman chipping in during Steve’s inning at the mike, to say that this may go down as the most brutal Reds’ performance he’s ever seen, all things considered.
Jason Johnson on in relief. O Savior!
After tonight:
Sept: 8-12 (.400)
Aug: 12-17 (.414)
July: 11-14 (.440)
June: 15-12 (.556)
May: 12-16 (.429)
April: 17-8 (.680)
I see one fluky, short month, balanced out by a season of crapitude. I ain’t hearing any more “we’re doing better than we expected” b.s.
painful, painful, painful
Woo! Edwin in on the E action! A new season high of 6 in the game!
And most for the Reds in a game since 1971, says Steve.
The season has transpired to be slightly better than the experts predicted, but along the lines of what the talent belies.
Anyone still believe this is a better team than last year? Hell, anyone believe this is a better team than they had Opening Day?
This team has more talent than they showed. Particularly on offense, with their two best hitters turning in the disappointing seasons they’ve had. Claussen should have had a better season.
And of course, we could still be looking at Womack instead of Phillips.
Holy cow, the Reds sure went out in order in a hurry there.
I think tonight’s game was the RedReporter/RedHotMama group outing. I’m so, so sorry for them. Though, by now they must’ve downed enough beverages to dull their pain and are having a good time anyway.
Cubs out in the top of the ninth. So no more Reds’ errors, at least.
11-4 Cubs.
Game over, 11-4. Astros are primed to pass them by the end of the evening, headed for sole possession of second place.
I think Lohse has exited the plans for the Reds rotation next year. Krivsky needs to land at least two starters.
