This is it, folks.
If the Reds are going to hang around this pennant race, it’s time to make a stand. A sweep of the Wild Card-leading Padres would go a long way toward putting the Reds right back into the thick of things.
Eric Milton takes the mound, and we never needed him more than tonight. The Pads will counter with Chris Young, who has had a pretty good season.
The time for excuses is over. If the Reds have a chance to make the playoffs, it starts with a win tonight.
I’ll be cheering on the Reds. Hope to see you here in the game thread, as well.

Lineups:
Pads
Cameron CF
Giles RF
Barfield 2B
Piazza C
Johnson LF
Gonzalez 1B
Bellhorn 3B
Alexander SS
Young P
Very questionable lineup for the Reds:
Freel CF
Hatteberg 1B
Aurilia SS
Encarnacion 3B
Dunn LF
Phillips 2B
Hopper RF
Ross C
Milton P
That’s not a playoff lineup, but I’m not sure it’s Narron’s fault. He can only work with the hand he’s dealt.
That’s terrible. Norris Hopper starting for a playoff contender? Are you kidding me?
I like Hopper; he could be a decent bench player, maybe. But starting in the middle of a pennant race.
Sure wish we had Austin Kearns or Wily Mo Pena right now.
i don’t know what’s wrong with that lineup. Hopper’s been pretty good this year, and what can you do when griffey get’s hurt? Sure the kearns trade was bad, but no larue, no clayton… seems good to me. go reds!
Agreed. With Griffey Jr. out, Norris Hopper is currently the best option (choices are Hopper, Denorfia, and Hollandsworth). Denorfia has to stop swinging at everything before he should be put back in.
And Griffey ought to be back before too much longer. Within the week, maybe within the series.
Hopper in that lineup is just bad. I like the guy, but there’s no reason to think that he’s a good option (not that Narron has much of a choice with Jr hurt).
Also, Aurilia hitting third gives me an immediate bad reaction, but I can’t complain about the way he’s been hitting.
You can’t look at that lineup and say that it’s the lineup of a playoff-caliber team. I just hope we win!
I’ll take Hopper in the lineup over Clayton or Larue. The Pads lineup is pretty questionable too, today and in general.
Milton had a good start against SD last time out, didn’t he?
Your point is well taken, Ken.
One batter, one fly ball out.
Milton with a 2:1 g/f ratio going . . after three batters.
Freel K’s
E6. Hatteberg reaches with one out.
Bet the Pads wish Khalil Greene were playing short tonight.
Wow, steal by Hatteberg. Good baserunning.
Has Piazza’s arm fallen off? I never would have guessed that he’d still be catching at this point in his career.
Young and Piazza are a great battery to steal against.
Aurilia K’s. Dangit.
Marty is talking about Young’s college basketball career. I saw him play, and he was pretty good. Great body control for someone 6′10″. Basebally turned out to not be such a bad choice, though.
Edwin can’t come through.
I agree about Piazza. I thought he’d be a 1B or a DH by this time.
Where did Young play in college?
Piazza still has his bat, though. He crushed that one.
Wind’s blowing out. Milton scares me.
Hey, Milton got an out!
Young played at Princeton. Not the greatest competition, but he could’ve started at a lot of name schools, IMO.
He quit after his sophomore year after being drafted by the Pirates.
Don’t blame him.
Escapes with just one run. Lets see if we can answer…
Come on, Dunner Get us on the board.
We need about five runs in this inning.
Dunn struck out. I can’t believe it.
Jeeze, I didn’t realize this Young guy was so tall.
Nice – 8 pitch inning for Milton.
ugh. Dispicable RISP performances continue. Hatte pops up to SS. 2 outs for Rich. Runners at 2nd and 3rd.
Yeah Farney!
HUGE shot by Richie!
Now THAT is how to do it. Homer for Aurilia.
Rich Aurilia is on fire!
22 homers, heckuva year really
I just got on, and I’m confused: Those complaining about Hopper in the lineup….umm…who were you expecting? Not a playoff lineup? THIS IS THEIR BEST LINEUP RIGHT NOW! Who were you planning on putting in there?
VERY curious.
C’mon Milty. One more out.
Patience, Brandon.
anybody else have fsn cutting out really bad?
Brendan Harris . . . oh right, the missing piece to the Bray-Majewski score. Has anyone followed his progress since coming over here?
Militon Gone after 5 innings and 85 pitches?!? Is our bullpen that good we can go 4 scoreless?
Thoughts Welcome.
BTW, if some of you were poster to the Yahoo boards before Yahoo decided to force the new beta version down out throat, here is the link to the new improved (ha, ha) board.
What in the world is Narron thinking? Is it a weather thing?
WLW speculating that Franklin is being stretched out a little to see if he might be a candidate for the next 5th starter.
By “WLW,” I mean “Marty.”
Marty is speculating that Narron wants to give Franklin extended work today so that he’ll be ready for a start against the Cubs. Ugh.
I’m usually skeptical of leaving in Milton too long, but he was at 85 pitches and the Padres weren’t doing much. I don’t like this move.
I’m an echo
Man, does Ryan Franklin ever do well?
Steve, I think the complaints about the lineup were about the fact that this is the Reds best lineup. No one argues that, it’s just pathetic that that is the truth.
Any lineup with Norris Hopper in it is a team that doesn’t have much firepower. We really need Kearns right now.
It scares me to leave Milton in with this many pitches, but Ryan Franklin blows. I don’t know what to do, so I can’t really criticize Narron.
wow, does this suprise anyone.
I love that Narron has put so much faith in Franklin this year. How much more evidence does he need that Franklin sucks rocks!
I’m so sick of this stupid bullpen. We’d be 15 over .500 if it weren’t for those retards in the bullpen.
Agreed. And Ryan Franklin?!? He’s been leakier thatn the titaniic when it comes to holding a lead in relief.
Like I said. Tie ball game. Jack Ass.
Yes, please give Franklin the hook now, Jerry.
I hope Cormier is warming up.
(Sarcasm, people. Sarcasm.)
Franklin’s ERA as a Red: 5.12 . His RA is 6.16 .
Another day, another mis-placed reliance on Ryan Franklin.
If his contract hadn’t been renewed, there would be talk about whether Narron would be coming back next year.
For all the hype about how great this team has improved, they’re headed for about a 5 game improvement.
Dammit. I WAS JOKING!
At least Krivsky fixed the bullpen.
Not!
F’in Frenchy puts the Pads ahead. I’m sick of this crap!
Letss see if Frenchy can give up the lead.
Good Criminy.
I was sitting in the other room by the TV but I had to say something about Franklin… STOP GIVING HIM THE BALL NARRON! WAKE THE HELL UP!!! Also… DA, update that ERA as Cormier allows another.
Whoops. Franklin’s ERA is now 5.68 . His RA is 6.63 .
This is so weak.
Let’s salvage this game, Brandon.
Since acquired by the Reds:
Schoenweis: 24 days on the roster, 10 G, 9 IP, 0.96 WHIP
Bray: 59 days on the roster, 22 G, 22 IP, 1.66 WHIP
Franklin: 34 days on the roster, 14 G, 18 IP, 1.85 WHIP (before today)
Cormier: 40 days on the roster, 18 G, 12 IP, 1.83 WHIP (before today)
Majewski: 35 days on the roster, 14 G, 11.1 IP, 2.29 WHIP
Franklin and Cormier have been the worst of the pitchers acquired, yet have pitched more frequently, by far, than anyone else.
Put Majewski in there. Trial By Fire!
and the reason Milton was pulled after five innings?
Five game improvement, Chris? There’s plenty of time for them to equal last year’s record.
There’s a double by EE. Love that kid.
Can Dunn come through? He’s my favorite player, but I think I know how this one ends.
Jerry Narron must be fired!!!
Gameday Shows Cameron’s out over the wall.
When do you realize that putting the 2 worst pitchers from the bullpen back to back isn’t the samrtest move. Its like, hey I think I’ll have Rick White relieve Chris Hammond in the 9th with a 1-run lead.
I don’t get it.
I agree that they can equal last year’s record, RagTag. They only need to win 2 more games. I strongly doubt that they’re going to win more than 80, though.
Save us again, Aurilia.
Nubber, but Phillips reaches, and now we have bases loaded.
At the plate? Norris Hopper. Ouch.
Please, just a sac fly todd
Okay, Hollandsworth is pinch-hitting. I’m not sure that’s any better, but at least he hits left-handed.
HOLY CRAP
Oh, man. That wasn’t good at all. EE could have scored.
At least Ross is coming up. He’s been the hero all year.
I agree with Welsh, Berry should have sent Encarnacion there, in a game like this.
Is this really a smart pinch hit? Hmmm…
This is a bad move. Ross is the better hitter, even vs. the righty side-armer. Hope it works out anyway.
Okay, maybe it’s Valentin. All in all, I’d rather have Ross, but the LLM has been pretty good in the pinch.
Trying to stay positive.
EE would’ve been out at home, IMO.
A grand slam would make us all quit complaining about Narron.
For a little while.
Struck out, left bases loaded. This team can’t hit.
You could very well be correct, Chris, but I think you have to take the chance. This team is a crappy offensive club. I think you have to push the envelope to get that run.
And look what happened. Bases loaded with one out and they can’t even score. Sheesh.
JavaMan is on to pitch. That doesn’t excite me as much as it did earlier in the season.
It’s time to put some runs on the board!
It’s time to put some runs on the board!
For the love of God, YES!
Wow, Embree’s been around forever. I remember him when he was a big trading deadline chip.
Chaw-spittin’ Alan Embree. I didn’t know he was still around.
Who’s pitching in the top half of the 8th? Has Marty said who is warming up? If George Grande mentioned it, I missed it.
Brayski.
Looks like a terrible crowd, considering half-price tickets and dollar dogs. Cincy fans have given up.
Bill Bray.
Part of the Kearns/Lopez swag is pitching. At least it’s the not too terrible one.
Don’t think anyone mentioned it, but Gameday Reports Milty left with an elbow injury. Jerry Narron did not deserve our collective ire for that move. Though he does deserve it for replacing Milton with Frankiln and Frenchy.
Rotoworld is reporting that Milton’s elbow stiffened up. No link as to where they got that info though.
Link
Either Marty or George Grande reported that information about Milton earlier, as well. I don’t remember whom (I’ve been alternately watching and listening on XM tonight).
1 run down…but they Reds should be tied according to Mary on the radio…
Must score this inning, before Hell’s Bells comes in.
Another chance for Dunn here. Fingers crossed.
Single by Dunn. We’re in business here.
“Get well wishes going out to [X], who’s been feeling under the weather lately. No doubt he’s tuned into tonight’s broadcast…”
Don’t think Marty meant it that way, but very funny. Really not a hugely depressing game, though. Yet.
EE steals third, but I swear I thought he was out.
Yet, DA.
Wow. Edwin steals third? Must have done that on his own, Dunn stayed at 1st. Maybe didn’t realize Piazza was out of the game?
That steal by EE is huge, because he ties the game on the ground ball.
And GREAT hustle from BP, beating out the double play.
Tie game. Now this is a much better opportunity for this to become a depressing game.
Tie game. Now let’s get a couple more so we can bring in OUR closer!
Oh, wait a minute….
Hollandsworth-less.
Poor Tampa Bay. Delmon was so po’d that he wasn’t being brought to the majors, but look what he has to be a part of now – 12-0 whuppings at the hands of the Yankees.
Oh, hell no. Not Weathers.
Then again, guess there really isn’t anyone better in the pen. That’s sad.
The worst player on the roster is now in right field. I guess we should be happy that Narron didn’t switch Dunn out of the game for DeWayne Wise.
This one’s for the new member of your brood, Stormy. Make it a good outing.
Weathers’ gut is bigger than mine.
But he gets the first out. Excellent.
Agree, DA. Let’s get a win for the newest Weathers.
Since the All-Star break, Weathers has thrown 25 innings and allowed just 11 hits, 2.16 ERA over that time.
Padres crew said tonight’s crowd was the smallest they’ve seen at any park all year.
Stormy!
What was Weathers’ pre-ASB ERA?
Uhhhh…{small voice} 5.09 before the ASB. in 40+ innings.
Lead off single… Denorfia in to run, DeWayne Wise to hit (bunt?)
*prays for no extra innings*
Okay, three outs. Now, let’s go score a run.
Big walkoff win here might get this team going again.
Two on, one out.
Wow, DA. I knew Weathers had been better lately, but I didn’t realize he had improved that much.
Small sample sizes, both of them. Who knows where his real level is. I prefer the post-ASB level.
Did George Grande just call Valentin’s frozen rope a “bloop”? He’s out of control.
Single will score Denorfia, who’s pinch running for LLM. Please!!!
What an odd strike zone tonight…
3-1 to Hatty.
You can always count on Hatteberg working the count.
Took one down the middle. Full count to Hatty. I’m going to have a heart attack.
Hits into a double play. I think I’m going to cry.
Casey could have done that.
(just kidding. i prefer hatty)
Zap. On to extras. Still as much a must-win game as it has been all night.
Quick housekeeping note: lately some of my comments have appeared with timestamps that are off by a few minutes, in both directions. Sometimes this results in my next comment generating the “Sorry, you can only post a new comment once every 15 seconds. Slow down cowboy” message, so I have to wait 5 minutes or so. Looks like this happened to CeeKeR too, with #128 above appearing to come before the previous inning was finished in #130. Theories?
Two outs in the 10th.
DA – I noticed that too with my posts…not sure why, but it was annoying to say the least!
Hmmm…I hadn’t noticed that. I’ll check into it.
Yeah, it’s happened to me, too, but tonight is the first time that I’ve noticed it.
Reds went over 2 million in attendance…guess all that whining by the radio talking heads, management, etc helped sell the team more than last year….. OR, maybe the mediocrity of the NL, making the Reds look better, helped sell the team a bit more than last year…
I wouldn’t be surprised to see another uptick in attendance next year. Krivsky frustrates many of us, but Castellini is really going to bring some excitement back to Cincinnati. Look for some good marketing of the club.
Dang, Weathers can’t stand prosperity. Two runners on, and here comes Narron. Who’s he bringing in and who is he taking out?
Hatteburg out, Castro in, Aurilia to 1st base…
Well, Castellini certainly must have earned a lot of goodwill with these half-price / dollar dog days. And for important series, too. He looks to be in the right frame of mind.
Schoeneweis. Castro. Todd Walker pinch-hits, then Bard pinch-hits for Walker. September call-ups make this silliness possible.
Don’t have a problem with those lineup moves by Narron, really.
And Castro makes the play to end the inning. Hate having Hatty out of the game, but I can live with it.
‘Silliness’ was more directed at the pinch-hitting for pinch-hitters, like when Narron used up all his catchers in one at-bat that way over the weekend.
Here’s our inning! This one will belong to the Reds (soon)…
…end wishful thinking…
San Diego certainly has a lot of ex-Reds.
Yeah, I noticed that last time the Reds played the Pads…
1 down, EE up
HR from Dunn would be real nice right now!
Please, Dunn, hit a walkoff home run.
I’m really not asking for much.
Wasn’t directing my comment up there at you, DA (about the silliness).
Maybe BP can be the hero.
I didn’t realize anyone on the Padres had an ERA over 4. It’s been an endless stream of low 3’s with the occasional 0 in there. Yet here is Brocail at 4.55 .
Bard and Walker are very legit hitters.
If we had a bullpen like theirs, they might be looking up at us in the Wild Card race. Or the Cards might be chasing us in the Central.
Brocail was at 5.++ a couple weeks ago. Of course, he’s had 2 angioplasties this season, so he’s ahead of the game.
On to the 11th.
*sigh* On to the 11th inning…
Wow, two angioplasties. I hadn’t heard that.
If the Reds had a bullpen like the Padres, the Reds would be battling the Mets for homefield advantage. I believe that very strongly.
What about a bullpen like the Padres, along with a healthy Junior and Austin Kearns starting in RF. Man, that would be nice.
I hope you all stay up-to-date with the Church Of Baseball; here’s a timely post there about tonight’s game.
Yikes. Clayton is the last player on the bench. Padres down to one also (Cust).
How many pitchers do the Reds have left, anyone know?
17
Assuming that one among Michalak, Johnson, and Kim is being saved for a rotation spot, the Reds have 6 pitchers left in the bullpen.
But they’re all left-handed relievers.
Yeah, great post by Daedalus. You can’t argue with her logic.
Men designated as “pitcher” on the Reds roster:
Used:
Bill Bray
Todd Coffey
Rheal Cormier
Ryan Franklin
Eric Milton
David Weathers
Scott Schoeneweis
Unused:
Matt Belisle
Jason Johnson
Gary Majewski
Chris Michalak
Brian Shackelford
Jason Standridge
Aaron Harang
Bronson Arroyo
Sun-Woo Kim
Kyle Lohse
Can LaRue redeem his entire season here?
And he does!!!!!!!!!!
Belisle, Johnson, Kim, Majewski, Shackelford, Standridge have not pitched yet.
But Castro can make it a moot point with a walk—-okay, perhaps not, but LaRue can do it then.
LaRue the HERO?!?!?
I never THOUGHT I’d say it…that’s for sure… But this one belongs to the Reds!
Awesome!
And this one belongs to the Reds!
The players looked as “ho-hum” about that as I do. Getting beat by LaRue is a “kick in the crotch,” as the Padres’ announcer just said.
I like it. Very important to avoid a loss tonight.
Two and a half back. The dream lives on.
Freel is out of control. He was elbowing LaRue in the back.
He needs to go feed Farney.
So, what are the Cardinals doing tonight?
There’s still hope – however slight…
The dream of a sweep is still in tact too, here we go Cincy!
Cards down 5-4 in the 8th to the ’stros.
Florida winning 4-0 in the 6th over NY.
Giants dowwn 4-0 in the 2nd to the Rockies…
Cards are losing to Houston in the bottom of the 8th.
Come on, Mets.
Even Better news… back above the mendoaza line!!!! Of all people to hit that home run… who’d a thunk it?!?!
I heard Marty say earlier in the game that Jerry Narron thinks the Reds have a better chance of catching the Cardinals than they do of winning the wild card.
There’s some logic in that. To win the wild card, we’re going to have to leap over a bunch of teams.
So many teams to scoreboard watch…at least many of them are currently playing against each other.
Cubs being decent and beating LA.
Could be 4 back in the division after tonight to. With 18 games left to be played and being only 2.5 and 4, respectively, out of two races, they are every bit in this chase.
Most of those teams, Jimmy, are only 1 game ahead of the Reds. If they take the series, they hang in and reduce the Padres lead, possibly catch up to some of those other squads. If they sweep, I could see 5 teams being within a game of each other.
LaRue raised his average 4 points to a lusty .184 with his 1-1 night. So not at the Mendoza Line yet. Though the Reds did pass a Mendoza line of a sort: over .500 again.
Cards and ‘Stros are going to the bottom of the ninth. Houston still leads by one.
StL loses.
Now before I get too far ahead of myself… Peavy vs. Lohse tomorrow. Aweseome matchup. Both have great stuff. Hopefully we see Lohse pitch the way he did after he settled down in San Diego (let up 3 in 3 innings but then held) against the Pads. Peavy is extremely hot/cold. Last time we saw the good Peavy and he shut the Reds down. Peavy and Lohse show a lot of parody. I will say it again… good matchup.
Justin, I want some of what you’re smoking.
Peavy is a perinniel Cy Young candidate. Lohse was DFA’ed a month ago.
Cards have a guy on base.
I also hope that the offense can use this win (2 in a row so far) as some momentum going in to tomorrows game.
…bunted him to 2nd.
Cards tv announcers with some love for LaRue there.
Preston Wilson seeking revenge against his old team.
Meanwhile, LA has the tying run aboard.
Aside from his start in San Fran and the beginning of his SD start, Lohse has looked pretty lights out for the Reds. I really could care less how bad he was for the Twins. He has pitched enough for Cincy to start gaging his abilities. Peavy has been great in his career, but this year has been his worst yet. His ERA is at a 4.31, with a lot of stellar shutdowns and some serious piss-poor outings as well.
Lohse vs. Peavy is an awesome matchup? I hope Lohse lives up to the billing tomorrow.
Crap, Lidge just hit Edmonds, bringing Pujols to the plate with two out in the bottom of the ninth.
Oh no.
With two on, and a one run deficit.
ugh
I know our team isn’t great, but it has been a long time since I scoreboard-watched with a huge interest like this. Even if chances are slim, we still have a chance.
And it’s kinda fun.
Pujols just won it. That guy is a machine.
Oh well.
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuddddddddggggggge…..
pujols? groaaaan…
Now for my critique on this game…
1.Narron needs to figure out that Franklin is not a go to guy. Give him the ball to eat up innings when your team has a 5 run or more lead, but nothing more.
2.Edwin should have scored on that fly to center field, or at least made an attempt. I have no idea why Berry held him up there.
3.I think a double steal would have been in order when they had runners on 1st and 2nd (Deno and Freel) and 1 out in the 9th. If you get caught at 3rd, worst case, you sill have your winning run in scoring position with 2 out. No matter what you eliminate the double play possibility.
If you get a chance to see the Reds highlights…watch Freel (aka psycho Farney) repeatedly JAM his elbow into Larue’s back… Either Freel has no idea how to celebrate…or he hates Larue and tried to break his back…
Again, I guess we all need to remind ourselves: How many of us would have really thought we’d be this close to the playoffs (regardless of the crappy NL – who’d a thunk that?) on 9/12? Not me. I’ll take it, bizarre baseball year and all.
I’m gonna pretend they have 82 wins and that this is a normal baseball year
But in the end, it doesn’t matter, does it? They’re in it, with 18 to go. If this was the NFL, we’d all be thinking 2 to 4 games was overcomeable (probably not a word) with that kind of deferential.
I know, I know, I’m reaching, but all you baseball historians know that MUCH stranger things have happened in the last month, wild card or no.
Mets have closed the gap to 4-1 over the Marlins, and they have bases loaded with one out in the 7th.
Some OLD guy is batting for NY.
18 games is plenty of time to make up 2.5, especially in this league. They just have to beat the Padres and then be that team that streaks the most in that final stretch.
Franco struck out. Jose Reyes to the plate.
I agree that it is possible (though I wonder how many times it has actually happened), especially in this league of mediocrity.
But our biggest issue is that we have to leap over four teams to get there. Not all of them are going to stink, you’d think.
Expect those WC probabilities from Baseball Prospectus to surge with a series win or sweep against the Pads, as I’m sure this series was instrumental in their chances on the simulation.
… but again I am getting ahead of myself… still have to take one of the next 2.
A win is a win, especially this time of year. However, the bats have got to start being more reliable. The offense needs to pick it up.
Anyone going to the game tomorrow? I’ll sure as hell be there.
MMMMM…. dollar dogs
Reyes grounds into a force. Tankersley escapes a big jam for Florida.
Wish I could be there, Justin.
Playoffs or no playoffs… this team has been so much fun this year. I mean should it be more exciting rooting for the .500 Reds in the hunt or for a team like the Mets who have already locked up a spot and who are playing just filler?
I’m just loving every second of this because I have heard season over, finished, forget about it, so many different times, yet those people keep coming back hungry for more when they realize this is still a viable race.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6m5tdXzluQ
That got me through the West Coast Trip
haha
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RZuf3joNZ9I&mode=related&search=
We could use some help from the Mets. They’re coming up to bat in the top of the eighth right now.
BEAT THOSE PESKY FISH!!!
I’ll say it again… I hate the Marlins with a blaring passion.
Simply beacuse of the town they are in and thier unappreciative fans who don’t deserve them to be there.
Every Marlins win is an absolute waste. A spoil of a victory. MLB is in place for fans to enjoy and what good is a team that no one gives a crap about.
How about Milton tonight? He has looked good of late. I hope his arm is ok.
700 saying the Reds were considering a Franklin start on saturday. If Narron starts Franklin against the Cubs I will probably break something.
Colorado threatening in the 5th against the Giants
Baker pays off with a double. Runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 out… Rockies now down 6-5
Milton looked alright tonight, though he threw too many pitches. I’ll take that from him every time out (with maybe one more inning, or two).
METS TIE THE MARLINS!
Yeah, if Narron starts Ryan Franklin, I don’t know how I’ll respond.
Nice! Go Mets!
Delgado, 3 run home run!
Mets just scored again! They now lead 5-4.
…only one out too, runner on 2nd. lookin good.
As bad as Dusty Bakers club is, it is still too much risk to throw a guy like Franklin out there to go 5-7 innings
Colorado fails to get anywhere in the 6th. Still a 1-run game though.
It really is exciting when scoreboard watching this late in the season is meaningful.
Chatanooga’s done, right? So is Bailey still a possibility?
If we ever needed a spark……..
Bailey may be a must for a couple starts if Milton can’t finish the season… would be unable for postseason but we could use him for a couple instead of looking at a Woo Kim, Jason Johnson, or Ryan Franklin (take 2 of 3) rotation roundout.
… forgot Michalak. Either way, I wouldn’t want to see 2 of those 4. 1 of them would be bearable.
Mets finish off the Fish. Some more good news from tonight…
Colorado has fallen behind, however, with one more chance in the top of the ninth.
Damn… SF has made it even tougher, 9-5 now.
Williamson misses playing for the Reds. Check this out…
http://mlb.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/news/article.jsp?ymd=20060912&content_id=1658974&vkey=news_sd&fext=.jsp&c_id=sd
Colorado trying to come back (longshot, but we’ll see…) There was a delay for injury but of yet, I have no idea to whom… obviously it sucks for a player to get hurt, but from a Reds standpoint, let’s hope it is a Giant.
At this rate of talking to myself, this thread may make 300 posts. hahah.
Ok. Game over in SF. Mike Stanton holds off the Rockies. 10-6 is the final.
So end of the night wrap on the WC race…
SD -
SF 1.5
PHI 2
FLA 2
CIN 2.5
HOU 4.5
Well off to bed for me as I’ve flooded this thread enough and the baseball night is over.
See you all here tomorrow. I will be at the game though. Anyone else that might be going, say so. A RedLegNation rally group should make it to the park before the end of the regular season. Chicago series possibly???
I called the HR. I was sitting with my wife watching the game when LaRue came up. I said that LaRue was ending the game and asked her to bet. She said no. But after his first swing she took my bet only to lose it on the next swing. I just had a feeling the game was over when LaRue came up.
I FELL ASLEEP … I FREAKIN’ MISSED THE HR … had to see the highlights on ESPNews this morning
But I’m glad it was a win for the Redlegs!!!!
I’ve had the feeling many times this year that the game was over when LaRue comes to bat, but this was different. A good different.
i still don’t get people saying that it’ll be easier for us to win the division than the wildcard. yeah we’ll have to “leap” 4 teams to get the wildcard, but that’s a pretty short leap considering that 3 of those teams are within a game.
huge game last night, and another big one tonight. another thing i don’t get from this thread: the scoffing at the idea that lohse and peavy is a good matchup.
It is a good matchup, Lohse has been on fire since he came over to the reds, and peavy has always killed the reds. that’s a good matchup. Peavy has been really good, but he has been inconsistant and fragile through his whole career, and he certainly isn’t topping anyone’s cy young charts this year.
It’s tough when you don’t know who to pull for: Cards or ‘Stros. I guess the best case is that there next game goes 50 innings, tires every arm out and finally the game gets called due to weather because a freak bolt of lightening took out both Pujohls and Oswalt. Short of that scenario, I’m not sure what to hope for. I’ve made up my mind that I’m just hoping for the Reds to win tons of games and let the rest of the competition sort things out for us. I’m trying not to do a lot of scoreboard watching.
Root for Houston. They’re not going anywhere.
checking the other contender’s schedules, the marlins appear to have the toughest row to hoe. NY, ATL, NY, PHI, CIN, PHI.
They’ve been a crazy surprise this season, but hopefully that will be enough to take them out.
