Great start to the series last night, huh? Exactly what I was hoping for.
Tonight, the Reds have an opportunity to move back into the Wild Card lead by defeating the Pads. Which Kyle Lohse will we see tonight? The good one, I hope; he’s facing Jake Peavy, so he’ll have to be good to get the win tonight.
Discuss the game here…and until the game starts, feel free to discuss the college football action from today. I’m currently watching my alma mater let their first opponent march down the field on the first drive of the game. Hope the Reds defend the Padres better than this.
UPDATE: By the way, Norris Hopper was recalled today.
UPDATE 2: As noted in the comments, RN editor Chris is at the game tonight. He’s going to be sending me pictures as the game progresses. Here is the first one, of the Chicken in attendance at the game:

UPDATE 3: Dunn and Junior:

Dunn rounding third:

Well, since you asked…
Great start by the Buckeyes. Well worth the $21 in PPV charges. Lil’ Garrett Wolfe is going to be hell on the MAC, though.
I’ll be at tonight’s game. And if the technology works out (and Chad’s checking his email), I’ll try to send a few pics from the ballpark.
Send the pics. I’ll post them immediately.
I love technology.
And my alma mater is UVa, as our regulars know…and Pittsburgh just drove down the field and scored a touchdown on the first drive.
I’m going back to Madden ‘07 (my wonderful wife brought it home for me today).
By the way, I’m going to update the thread above, but Norris Hopper has been recalled. He can’t help the team much, but I just like the guy.
FG for UVa. Down 7-3 with two minutes left in the first quarter.
Tennessee is destroying Cal. I’m surprised.
Pac-10 stinks. It’s even worse than Tennessee.
I was stuck watching my brother-in-law’s band at a bar just across the border into Orange County last night, where they don’t carry the Padres games. How many times did the Reds try to run on Piazza? He has NOTHING left, arm-wise. Honestly, they could run every time, and even have a 60% success rate on pitchouts. Especially against a sinker-baller like Hensley, they should’ve been running every time.
Jeff Passan had this to say in his “Storylines of September”:
23. With that in mind, the best race might not be for the wild card itself as much as for the NL wild-card team finishing above .500. There is a fierce battle of mediocrity taking place in the NL, one imbued with some false sense of hope among nearly a dozen fan bases who prepare for the playoffs with full knowledge their teams stink.
Pretty good description of us. We know the Reds are seriously flawed, but we also know that we still have a chance at the playoffs. Strange situation to be in.
Guess we’ll just keep cheering until the last day, and see where the team ends up.
No television tonight? That’s disappointing.
Virginia Tech won easily today – but no shocker there, it was their annual season-opening 1-AA opponent. This year it was Northeastern.
By the way, Homer Bailey must be upset that his last start (with Krivsky in the stands) didn’t result in a call-up. Tonight’s line: 0 innings, 3 hits, 4 walks, 1 wild pitch, and somehow only 4 runs allowed. Phenomonal relief work from Justin Mallett – came in with the bases loaded & nobody out, and escaped.
The Phillies are pretty much assured of a split in their doubleheader today with ATL, which will leave them 1 game over .500. That’s right where the Reds are now, and where they want the Padres to be after tonight’s game.
Reds out in order in the first. 2 K’s and a first-pitch groundout.
Why is FSN not carrying this game? I thought about getting the MLB TV thing, but I’m inside the blackout area.
Gotta knock Peavy out of cruise control
It’s one thing to run on Piazza at every opportunity. It’s another to not get any opportunities. Reds up and down in order each of the first three innings, and down on the scoreboard 2-0.
it’s still too early to be downtrodden. Back to the top of the order next inning.
Reds need to get the bats moving… This game is *almost* a must win. One of the few remaining games against an “important” foe.
Another reason why Freel needs to be in Center Field
Lohse needs to calm down. He got two quick outs there then dropped the ball. They need him to keep them in this game.
NICE ADAM!!
HR Dunn!
Finally a hit, and a run at the same time. 3-1 Padres.
Yes, a solo homer, but I’ve seen plenty of those spark an offensive surge from the rest of the team.
“highlight for the Reds”: They haven’t left anyone on base tonight, that whole not hitting with runners in scoring position hasn’t affected them yet. Of course, they only have 1 hit, and it was a homerun..but that’s just details
I really like this part of this Reds batting order… almost always a surprise.
Reds are showing some fight… And this one as well as many to come are WIN OR DIE games!
Great Kickoff Saturday.. I was really impressed by the Buckeyes offense… the New Defense (improved secondary, and D-line, but a bit weaker in the Linebacker positions containing the run) Troy Smith was fabulous passing the ball; didn’t even have to run the ball! Excited about Chris Wells (frosh) as the future tailback. The Buckeyes should’ve scored more, but as Tressel said they got a little sloppy with the big lead… Now time to go into Austin for the showdown… I strongly believe the winner of the game will go on to a national championship, and it should be The Ohio State University!
UT did show improvement, but truly not that impressed. They simply capitilized on the over rated Cal’s inability to tackle. 4 big plays on mis tackles.. Neither team showed they could produce a sustained drive. UT did play solid D!
Well one hit on the night, with that 123 inning…. If we can win this one we regain the lead in the Wild Card Race… which is rightfully ours!
Ohio sports teams are really solid this year.
Reds – playoff contention.
Cavs – Resigned Lebron to make the trip to the Playoffs.
Bengals – Healthy Carson possible AFC Champs
The Ohio State University – # 1 in Football, and Thad’s Five ranked higher than they’ve been in 2 decades!
Thats 3 more outs for Lohse.
I just heard during the GT-ND game that Texas is trying to hold only 5,000 tickets for Buckeye fans, and you know there will be more than 30,000 that show up. They said we should take up a downtown street and set up 2 big screens… I say just storm the Stadium! It’s payback time!
Lohse coming back strong… keeping them in this.
I hope i didn’t speak too soon.
Thank you Kyle.
OK. St. Louis lost. Philly split a DH. Quit screwing around and score some runs, Reds!!!
Griffey has at least made contact against this guy.
Has Griffey become boring or what?
10 K’s!! You have to be kidding me!
10 Punchouts. This guy has been on fire tonight.
What!
He took one to the wall last night… and need I remind you that he had a long hitting streak going!
Woo Wee!! A walk!
I’m back. Check the updates to the post above. Chris is sending me pictures from the game.
Stolen Base!!!
I sense we’re toast tonight!!
Bob Mathias, a two-time Olympic champion in the decathlon died today.
Hope you’re wrong about the toast, Jim. But I don’t have a good feeling, either.
Just two runs back, though!
Who’s up in the pen?
out will come Bill Bray
Guess Bray is coming in.
at least Narron isn’t putting his trust back into Majewski right away
Fight, guys! This one is winnable.
“you never know… the Reds could come back” – I love the between commercial and game clips
Junior, Junior, Junior…
Bray does a good Majewski impersonation there. Didn’t take long.
erases a quality start from Kyle Lohse
Don’t you just wish you could walk into the dugout and just scream?
well that sucks… oh and just announced, Majewski warming.
that sucks too. Damn it Bray
Here comes Majewski…
Oh crap, here comes Majewski. At least Bray already threw gas on the fire, so if Majewski sucks, at least the game is already largely lost.
He has a lot to make up for as far as I’m concerned. Hope he can do a 180 degree turnaround… we could use it.
I miss Austin and Felipe.
seeing Majewski’s face on the MLB gameday makes me snicker.
He’s a Magic Man!
Bray just blew up!
I think the Reds should try this lineup with Freel and Phillips switched. I think Farney gets too hard on Ryan sometimes.
Did you see that Kearns hit a homer today to win the game for the Nationals?
He has been slumping pretty hard.
Thats good… I like seeing ex-Reds help their former team.
Still, I wish he were a Red.
I also like seeing current Reds helping their current team.
For what it’s worth, Chris just emailed me from the stands with his assessment of that hit off Bray to give up the fourth run:
“Jr.is a joke. Should have had that easily.”
Indeed.
Please start a good rally here, please
nevermind
Double play.
What a big opportunity to pick up a game on St. Louis and re-take the Wild Card lead, and the Reds are letting it slip through their hands.
BP into a DP
With Milton on the mound tomorrow, my hopes of the Reds winning this series are dwindling.
Hope some of these coaches have invested wisely because I have a feeling they are going to be unemployed after the season.
wow. 12 K’s… I said it before, I’ll say it again… It seems like the Reds just gave up. Shame too, since they could’ve moved into first in the Wild Card again
12 Ks for Peavy. Sheesh.
like I said earlier… Jr. has given the Reds 2 new reasons to play Freel out there tonight.
I, too, miss Austin Kearns and his country baseball-themed coming-to-bat songs.
“Jr.is a joke. Should have had that easily.”
I am really tired of Junior. It’s time to move on.
I still like Jr. a lot. Sweet swing, still produces well enough to play but he should move to right.
Standridge coming back in style. jeeeeeez.
I’m not tired of Junior, but there’s no question that it’s time to get him out of center field. He’s hurting the team, no matter how much no one associated with the team wants to admit it.
Junior still has great value. Look at the current hit streak. Anyone else contributing that much right now?
c’mon Reds. c’mon Reds. muuuuusssst refuuuuuse to give upppp on thiiis teeeam.
not in time… damn.
WHAT!?!?!
Two on, no out. I like Standridge, but jeez.
This bullpen is just awful. Not one bit better than the mess we threw out there at the beginning of the year.
bases loaded, none out, not good.
What happened there?
I am all for Griffey switching with Freel. He should stay where is is in the order too… I like him there and he does still contribute. He has been solid of late.
At least a run didn’t score there, but why can’t they turn a double play?
They said Aurilia was off the bag and charged a throwing error on Phillips.
followed by a force at home and just now a strikeout.
Marty hammers the Nationals trade:
“It may work out in the long term for the Reds, but in the short term, it has not been a good deal.”
Don’t see any way in the world it works out in the long term, either. Relievers have a short shelf life; meanwhile, Krivsky traded away two good youngsters that could have contributed for years.
getting out of this jam would be impressive.
Who did they say is coming in? Cormier?
When is a manager going to get the cajones to tell Junior that he’s playing another position, ego be damned?
Shackelford: 6.43 ERA. Inspires confidence, eh?
Good question. Can’t see it being Narron.
Shackelford. Good grief.
Turn out the lights, the party’s over.
damn it Shackelford. Looking ahead… the Reds need to light up David fat washed up Wells tomorrow.
Marty’s hilarious right now. You can tell that he’s as frustrated with this team as we are right now.
As long as thin, washed up Milton doesn’t get lit up as well.
Make that ERA about an 8.50 about now…
The bullpen has successfully spoiled a good effort by Lohse and the offense has failed to touch the Pardres ace. I hope they got it out of them tonight and can at least salvage the series tomorrow.
The Padres at least have a deep park to accomodate Milton.
Unless it’s Yellowstone Park it may not be deep enough.
Standrige: 4.40 ERA; that’s mediocre. Now that’s an ace!
Man, on top of my Virginia Cavaliers getting destroyed earlier today and the US Open getting rained out, this has been a disaster of a sports day for me.
Well, that was just ugly. 2-7 on the road trip so far.
OK, we need tomorrow. Let’s go Uncle Milty!!
Recap from San Diego:
- Sorry I didn’t send more pictures – there just wasn’t any action tonight.
- Peavy looked very, very good. My seats are over by 3rd base, so I’ll have to check Tivo to see how good, exactly. Reds looked like they gave up about halfway through.
- Lohse was very good, in his own right. He had guys off-balance, and swinging and missing.
- Bray wasn’t as bad as his line. The only hard hit ball was Roberts’ liner to the drawn-in Aurilia. Giles’ was a bloop that a good CF would’ve caught (Griffey was miles from it), and Walker’s was a bloop.
- A good CF also cuts off Piazza’s ball before the warning track, and holds him to a single.
- Phillips’ leaping grab of that line drive was one of the more impressive catches I’ve seen in quite some time – most certainly the highest I’ve ever seen a baseball player leap. He was up there.
- Majewski came in, got his guy, and was replaced the next inning. Since this was how I was arguing for him to be used before, I can’t really bitch. But replacing him with Standridge, down 4-1 (and showing no signs of a comeback), didn’t seem to have much of a point.
- Everyone still loves the Chicken, though his act is pretty dated. The bit where a bunch of kids in little chicken outfits play follow-the-leader with him is still entertaining. Especially when he had them all slap Piazza on the ass, and lift their leg like a dog peeing on the ump.
