Freel balances the perception of the Reds’ defense. Great high-effort catch there – if he was a little heavier he’d be going through those fences instead of bouncing off them.
Wow. I think I’m convinced. A 500. record is gonna win the wild card, and if our guys can go 3-7 (oh, God forbid), that’s more than keeping tbem in the race. Getting those two other wins at this point, however, seems wishful thinking.
I’m with the Reds, regardless, through thick ‘n’ thin!
Are they playing Ross with some sort of shift? He tries to bunt for a hit more often than most players in general, not to mention catchers. And I don’t think he’s been successful yet.
Easy – gets out of it thanks to the bottom of the Dodger order. Apparently Hendrickson is a bad hitter even for a pitcher – he’s inspired the Dodgers announcers to tell stories about an old Tigers pitcher who got an ovation whenever he even managed to foul off a pitch.
Very good – Milton and Freel and Dunn, consecutive singles to lead off the 5th. Hey, I hadn’t registered that Dunn is hitting in the #2 spot today – hurrah!
Bases loaded with nobody out, Aaron Sele comes in to relieve. This is the guy that Scott Hatteberg caught in college, if I recall correctly.
luckily griffey didn’t hit that ball hard enough to let LA turn the DP. Tie game. The Reds need to get more than 1 run when they have bases loaded and 0 outs. come on richie.
Jeff, I like the positivity. Maybe that horrible at bat can land Clayton on the bench for the rest of the year. I would much rather have Castro in there at this point (obviously after RA).
Let’s see …
Ross fouls out on a bunt attempt the pitch after a home run …
Phillips already around second when the pop up is caught with one out to get doubled up off first …
Clayton a foul-bunt strike out in a situation where bunting barely make sense at all.
Baseball is a game with no time limits but you only get 27 outs, and we’ve given away a whole inning so far.
Marty just said the bullpen is no better than it was “before all the moves” Krivsky made to improve it. He’s right. But at least we don’t have Kearns and Lopez any more!
Too bad Eddie is on the DL, he could get out of this without having any idea where pitches are going. (can’t find smirk emoticon, too bleepin’ late anyway).
Apparently, neither team wants to win this game. LA loads the bases with no outs, singles to get 1 run and then manages not to get another one. 5-5 going into the 7th.
Bouncer up the line fielded by pitcher!!! Batting between the lefties get you an AB against leftie with 6.33 ERA and we get a bouncer up the line fielded by the pitcher!!! Ouch.
Have to remember this is the game where the best hitters fail 7 of 10 times.
Note that that was likely the perfect set up for Cormier, start inning, two lefties out of three. Well done. Presumably someone else will pitch the eighth.
Now let’s rip up this guy before his ERA drops below 6.
Detroit callup: I also think it is very interesting. Detroit is a team who has a very good pitching staff and has a playoff spot all but wrapped up and they call up a pitcher w/ less minor league experience than Bailey. The Tigers pitcher did pitch in college however, for what that is worth.
Why is Tom Hume rattling Jerry’s cage to get someone up on the bullpen. Earth to Jerry, earth to Jerry. Someone else is pitching the eighth, pinch hitter or not, right?
Now if the pitcher had gone into eight slot when Hatteberg pinch hit, we could have used right-handed pinch hitter, hmmm, never mind. Clayton actually has good average against lefties, better presumably than LaRue, Castro, or Denorfia. Although I would prefer Castro actually.
for a scrappy veteran clayton sure doesn’t play very scrappy, smart, or well for that matter. He doesn’t look like he’s even trying…. far from “playing the game the right way”
Somehow Narron has managed to have Clayton and Castro come up back-to-back in the end of one of the biggest games of the year for the Reds. Clayton bounced into a DP w/ 2 guys on. Hopefully Castro can do better.
The four most beautiful words in the English language … fly ball to right. If it stays in the park, Ryan catches it, if not, he still might catch it (get the old ladies out of the way, he might break a jaw or something.)
I’m getting a bad feeling that the Reds have gotten all of their chances tonight and haven’t been able to capitalize. Hopefully I’m wrong and the bullpen can get a few more outs.
I cannot believe Marty just said back-to-back lefties, Griffey on deck. I hope we don’t get burned by batting out of order. Wouldn’t that be the last straw.
Vin Scully is telling the same stories he told in the 4th inning. He has 50 times more info than anyone I’ve ever heard (Cormier was a high school badminton champ), but even he’s running out.
Marty’s tired…been getting way too excited over trivial outs…keeps saying the wrong thing (ie, Dunn was batting, even though he’s been out of the game for awhile now…) Hard for Marty to stay awake now I think…He even apologized a couple innings ago
Bray just has no idea where he is throwing it. That is dangerous when you are in the middle of the order. He is gonna groove one here pretty soon to the wrong batter.
As I noted the other night: I am a lifelong Reds fan and no Reds team has ever pissed me off as much as this one. I have been more frustrated watching games this year than ever before.
With this lineup, the Reds could play 50 innings and not score again. They essentially have four legitimate hitters on the field now (Aurilia, Jr, Phillips, Freel). EE is fouled up, and then it’s Castro, LaRue, Deno, pitcher.
I am about to unleash a comment full of profanities if the Reds can’t find a way to pull this game out. It is 10 til 3am, I’m tired, I’m grumpy, and the Reds are blowing this game.
John, I agree. They are either just good enough that it pisses you off when they can’t execute the easist things…or they are just bad enough that a glimmer of hope (ie, the horrible horrible NL Central) gives you hope they can win.
It’s a frustrating combination for sure…but keep in mind this team is only 5 games better than last year’s team at this point in the season.
haha, all of us our…but then again, ya need a little conversation to stay awake at this point. (3:00 AM here)…and to think I laughed when someone said it looked like 3 am was a possibility earlier tonight…
What’s really frustrating is when the Reds get their 3rd out without scoring – you that it’s either going to be a loss, or they have to get 6 more Dodger outs to win.
On the bright side, the bullpen has had a great night.
Seems like the batters (on both sides) gave up about 6 innings ago… Ground balls, pop outs, screwed up bunts… It’s been ugly from an offensive perspective.
This is really it. I don’t think they could even put Harang in there if they wanted – there’s nobody to start tomorrow’s game. Maybe if Lohse didn’t throw on the side earlier today…
That’s demoralizing. I think you can call tomorrow’s game a “must win.” I know it is early but the Reds are on a 5 game losing streak, have just lost the wild card lead, and have their ace going.
This happened to the ‘90 reds. 8-game losing streak as they headed to the West coast. But that was the middle of the season, and had built up a big enough lead to withstand it.
Hope we can win tomorrow and then manhandle the Padres.
Damn it, I want this team to win so f-ing badly. I can’t handle a 5 game losing streak in such a tight race this late in the season. They have to turn this train around quick. For such a long, hard-fought game to end like that is just heartbreaking.
1 pitch from Franklin… give me a break. I am not going to turn off my TV or radio until they mathematically cannot make it in. It will be tight all the way down the stretch… just gotta get something good rolling. The bats were back again tonight but the RISP problems still prevelant.
They gotta jump all over Maddux and get a good start from Harang. A big early lead would calm my nerves a bit anyway… but that just isn’t in the Reds’ repertoire.
RedLegNation was bested by RedReporter last night, which compiled over 1300 comments over multiple game threads last night (including a cooperative assault on a Dodger Blog occupied solely by Andrew, its administrator.) We are going to have to step it up!!! haha
I kept up with the RedReporter threads as long as I could take it last night; they’re quite a thing to behold. Something about some of those SBN blogs inspires commentators to production insanity. Though they become very clique-ish.
But that’s OK – I think Bill Hansing/NEILYNG/{insert alias} was the only one who wanted to turn it into a “Univ. of ____ vs. ____ State” kind of rivalry. Or Yankees vs. Red Sox. Or Coke vs Pepsi. Or…

I have to be in LA for work tomorrow morning, and I’m thinking about sticking around for the game. Another loss like yesterday and I might not.
1. Anyone else going to be there?
2. What time to the gates open at Dodger Stadium?
May one streak end tonight and a new type of streak begin! Please! The Cards are losing so they are giving us a chance.
So Narron has apparently decided that splitting up the lefties is a good idea now. No qualms here.

Lancaster reports that the Red Sux have called up Mr. Burns.
In other news, the Red Sux front office has declared their season officially over.
I will not be in LA tomorrow. I will be 2,985 miles away according to Google.
Not a good beginning for Milton – leadoff homer from Furcal.
Eric Milton’s shoulders have no directional stability, reports Vin Scully, i.e., his shoulders are double-jointed.
Goodness. A terrible beginning. Only one of the first 5 Dodgers retired, 2-0.
finally, the first inning ends. Reds down by 3, Let’s put some runs on the board!
3-0 after one.
Or maybe I won’t go tomorrow night.
Can someone tell me what the hell’s wrong with this team?
The Cardinals are running into the buzzsaw that is the Florida Marlins. 9-1 FLA over STL in the 8th.
Padres are up early over AZ, 2-0 in the 4th.
Hey, there’s something!
Looks like Phillips is heating up (minus his 3 pitch at bat in the 9th last night).
Homerun! 3-1.
Nice at-bat for Kenneth there. Leadoff single. Aurilia’s due for a hit.
Just like that, Aurilia homers; tied at 3.
Oops, I mean, 4-3 Dodgers. I conveniently ignored that last Dodger run on the Kent solo HR.
Are they playing Ross with some sort of shift? He tries to bunt for a hit more often than most players in general, not to mention catchers. And I don’t think he’s been successful yet.
Nice catch by Brandon! Hopefully Milton can escape the inning unscathed after the leadoff double.
Anyhoo, still 4-3 Dodgers after 4.
Bottom of the order or no, I take nothing for granted when Milton is pitching.
A solid leadoff single by Milton to start the fifth . . now ducks are on the pond thanks to singles machine Adam Dunn with no outs.
Bases loaded, 0 outs for Edwin
Very good – Milton and Freel and Dunn, consecutive singles to lead off the 5th. Hey, I hadn’t registered that Dunn is hitting in the #2 spot today – hurrah!
Bases loaded with nobody out, Aaron Sele comes in to relieve. This is the guy that Scott Hatteberg caught in college, if I recall correctly.
Call to the bullpen for the Dodgers
I’ve been asking for a sac fly all road trip long – and maybe even before that. Hopefully EdE can do more than that, but I’ll take a tie ball game.
milton forced out at home. griffey up w/ the bases loaded and 1 out.
luckily griffey didn’t hit that ball hard enough to let LA turn the DP. Tie game. The Reds need to get more than 1 run when they have bases loaded and 0 outs. come on richie.
Edwin can’t do it, but Griffey manages to trade an out for a run. Tied at 4.
Alright, tie game. Now let’s get at least one more. Only getting one run when you have bases loaded and no outs is frustrating.
richie grounds out to 3rd
Nuts. Bases loaded with no outs and the middle of the order up, and we only get one.
Crap. Just one.
Oh well, let’s hold them now.
Even when the Reds tie the game up, they manage to drive me crazy!
Not as frustrating as loading the bases with no outs and scoring no runs.
1 is all they get. 4-4, halfway through.
milton allows a walk w/ 2 outs and the hot-hitting Kent comes up. Milton just had to make this inning interesting.
Single by Kent. 2 runners on.
Kent is just a triple short of the cycle.
Nice play on the grounder by RA. On to the 5th inning
leadoff double by Ross
BP coming through with the single to put the reds on top 5-4. Phillips is now 3-3. And he steals 2nd on a pitch-out!
Why isnt Clayton bunting w/ no outs and a runner on 2nd?
Hall’s throw was off, but it wouldn’t have mattered . . Phillips was in easy.
Woo-hoo! When’s the last time the Reds led a game?
Clayton tries to bunt w/ 1 strike but bunts it foul. That is why he shouldve been bunting w/ no strikes.
He bunts another one foul! Strike 3.
HORRIBLE at bat by Clayton
Clayton needs to be released. He didn’t even square around on those sac bunts. He acted like he didnt want to get them down.
Bad call by Narron to have Clayton bunt with two strikes.
Pick ‘em up, Hatte.
Hatte flies out to LF. That might have scored BP if Clayton got the bunt down.
Well, at least the Reds, and the board have come back to life! Lets get Phillips around, Freelie!
The Reds really do not do a good job playing small ball. I can’t remember the last time i saw them manufacture a run.
At least they got the lead. 5-4 after 5 and a half innings. Here comes the bullpen.
Maybe Clayton just bunted himself to the bench with left-handed starter out. I say Hatteberg to first, RA to short. Just a thought.
Jeff, I like the positivity. Maybe that horrible at bat can land Clayton on the bench for the rest of the year. I would much rather have Castro in there at this point (obviously after RA).
2 singles to lead off the inning for Belisle
another single. bases loaded, no outs
Narron has no one going in the pen
Let’s see …
Ross fouls out on a bunt attempt the pitch after a home run …
Phillips already around second when the pop up is caught with one out to get doubled up off first …
Clayton a foul-bunt strike out in a situation where bunting barely make sense at all.
Baseball is a game with no time limits but you only get 27 outs, and we’ve given away a whole inning so far.
Marty just said the bullpen is no better than it was “before all the moves” Krivsky made to improve it. He’s right. But at least we don’t have Kearns and Lopez any more!
Now the Dodgers have bases loaded with no outs. Let’s hope the Dodgers are as inept as we were in that situation last inning.
Even better…Cormier just got up to get loose.
Another single. 5-5
where’s the hook?!?! 4 straight hits. Belisle is obviously not the answer. Sheezus.
3-2-3 DP! Nice work by RA
Too bad Eddie is on the DL, he could get out of this without having any idea where pitches are going. (can’t find smirk emoticon, too bleepin’ late anyway).
We need to get Nomar out here.
Sounded like a nice play by Aurilia there to pull off the double play.
DO NOT PUT FRENCHY IN!
That’d be a worse decision than leaving Belisle in after he loaded the bases.
Thank you Rich, thank you Ryan.
Apparently, neither team wants to win this game. LA loads the bases with no outs, singles to get 1 run and then manages not to get another one. 5-5 going into the 7th.
Almost everyone else behind the Reds won tonight. They need to get this game to hold onto their slim Wild Card lead and gain a game on the Cards.
In comes a reliever w/ a 6.33 ERA…and he isn’t a Red.
The Reds go 1,2,3 in the 7th.
Well, he quickly lowered that ERA.
The Tigers just called up their 1st round pick after only 3 games of pitching in single A!
There is the link if you are interested.
Oh god, not Cormier. Hold on to your hats, this could be a rough landing.
A 1,2,3 inning by Cormier almost feels as good as scoring the go-ahead run.
The Detroit call up is interesting, the kid thinks major league batters may have a different approach than those in single A. Yea, I think so.
Whoa. Where did the good Rheal come from? Gives the good guys a chance to take the lead during the big payoff inning.
Note that that was likely the perfect set up for Cormier, start inning, two lefties out of three. Well done. Presumably someone else will pitch the eighth.
Now let’s rip up this guy before his ERA drops below 6.
Super Dave … don’t bunt, please.
Detroit callup: I also think it is very interesting. Detroit is a team who has a very good pitching staff and has a playoff spot all but wrapped up and they call up a pitcher w/ less minor league experience than Bailey. The Tigers pitcher did pitch in college however, for what that is worth.
Phillips is now 4-4. Runners on 1st and 2nd w/ 1 out.
Okay, got something going here. BP is heating up again.
Clayton needs to make up for that last AB.
C’mon, Clayton. Make Marilyn Stack happy during the big payoff inning.
0-2. Sheesh, Clayton.
5-3 DP by Clayton….TAKE HIM OUT!
Why is Tom Hume rattling Jerry’s cage to get someone up on the bullpen. Earth to Jerry, earth to Jerry. Someone else is pitching the eighth, pinch hitter or not, right?
Damn, Clayton sucks.
I have had my effing fill of Royce Clayton. There is no possible justification for playing him. Ever. Just put Castro in there already.
I’d rather see Milton or Arroyo bat than Clayton.
Castro is no longer a “defensive substitution.” I would officially rather have him batting than Clayton for the rest of the year.
Do you know how bad Clayton must be for all of us to be clamoring for Castro to replace him?
Good grief Clayton. Time for an offensive replacement for that fool.
Boy, Cormier looked great tonight. Kent actually fell on his ass missing a changeup.
Leadoff double off of Cormier. Toby Hall is killing the Reds tonight.
get frenchy outta there! We got lucky for three outs, now its all down hill.
What? Why is he still in there.
Narron strikes again.
Toby Hall is killing the Reds tonight.
Cormier kills the Reds every time he pitches.
A successful sacrifice? Do you see that, Reds?
Marty with “Late night television trivia.” Goodness. It’s not like we’re in a tight game in the late innings, deep into a pennant race.
I guess that’s how that bunt thing is supposed to work.
Let’s see – runner on 3rd, less than 2 outs. You need a strikeout. Who do you bring in?
If you’re Jerry Narron, the answer is David Weathers.
Cormier out. Who’s in?
Looks like a double switch, which may mean Clayton is out. Awesome!
Castro in…and so is David Weathers. I’m terrified right now.
4.0 K/9IP
Maybe Royce should take a lesson from Lofton.
Finally, Cormier leaves. Castro comes in as the offensive replacement for Clayton.
Hope Weathers can keep it tied up.
Bray 6.69 k/9
Castro is our savior!
Did I mention I’m terrified?
Coffey (stinks) but 6.60 k/9
for a scrappy veteran clayton sure doesn’t play very scrappy, smart, or well for that matter. He doesn’t look like he’s even trying…. far from “playing the game the right way”
just use castro instead please.
no Narron, from the beginning of the game!
I wonder what the weather is like out there…stormy?
It will be soon.
where was that pitch?!!!!!!!
GREAT PLAY by Castro. No way Clayton would make that. He holds the runner at 3rd and makes the out at first.
Credit for at least getting Clayton out of there in a nick of time.
The umpires are out to get us.
Marty loves Castro. So do I, now.
Great play.
Castro is our saviour
Amen.
Walk to Furcal. Lugo up w/ 2 outs. This out is huge.
C’mon ground ball!
I was half-joking when I said “Castro is our savior”
…but now i’m not.
TSF Castro, manos do oro.
I hope the Spanish is right, I don’t want to impune the manhood of our savior or something.
Ugh. I love Castro’s defense, and he’s a much better option than Clayton…but it occurs to me that Castro will be leading off the ninth.
With his historically crappy OBP, that’s not a formula for putting together a winning rally. Hope he shows me where I can stick my OBP.
called strike 3! let’s get some runs!
David Weathers is our savior.
Here we go! Top of the 9th!
Stormy Weathers rocks.
Somehow Narron has managed to have Clayton and Castro come up back-to-back in the end of one of the biggest games of the year for the Reds. Clayton bounced into a DP w/ 2 guys on. Hopefully Castro can do better.
Saito kills the Reds (hopefully I jinx him)
castro trying to bunt his way on to lead off the 9th?
Castro K’s. Freel needs to get this going.
Stay hot, Dunn!
Dunn doubles and is 4-5 tonight. We need a base hit from EE.
EE flies out to CF. Bottom of the 9th.
Has everyone gone to bed?
Ugh. Dunn stays hot, but would’ve rather had a HR in that at bat. Up to Weathers to give us another shot.
Drew flies out to the warning track for the 2nd time tonight. Red-hot Kent up w/ 2 outs.
And they’re scaring me! Now with Kent up. 2 down. Lets not make it interesting.
Don’t worry….Kent only hits .522 against Weathers.
Kent flies out. Griffey needs to start us off in the 10th.
Looks like it’ll be a win in extras.
I was going to get up to watch the USA vs. Dirk Nowitski in basketball at 6:30AM. So much for that idea.
Griffey K’s to lead off the innning.
The four most beautiful words in the English language … fly ball to right. If it stays in the park, Ryan catches it, if not, he still might catch it (get the old ladies out of the way, he might break a jaw or something.)
RA works Saito for a walk w/ 1 out. Ross up.
Ross needs to get a hold of one. He’s due.
Isn’t the line from Ghostbusters “Let’s show this prehistoric pitch how we do things downtown?” Downtown being the key word, Super Dave.
Ross singles, RA to 3rd w/ 1 out!
Phillips is 4-4 and up w/ a runner on 3rd. I’d take a sac fly.
Nice. Now how about that sac fly I ordered a few innings back.
Does Rick Honeycutt speak Japanese? Thirty-two pitches, let’s wear this guy out, sixth highest pitch count of season.
5-4-3 DP by Phillips…good lord
Phillips has been red-hot…except when the game has been on the line. He strikes out looking last night and hits into a DP tonight.
That is NOT a sac fly. Good gravy.
I’m getting a bad feeling that the Reds have gotten all of their chances tonight and haven’t been able to capitalize. Hopefully I’m wrong and the bullpen can get a few more outs.
Is this weather’s 3rd inning?
Weathers is on the mound again.
He has pitched 1.2 so far
I don’t think he has pitched more than 2 this year.
well, he’s matched that here. another out and it’ll be 2.1
Oswalt signed a 5-year $73million contract w/ the Astros. (he is 29)
griffey catches it against the wall in CF. We’re going to the 11th after 2.2 scoreless innings from Weathers
Stormy survived another inning…although calls like “hit deep to center” are enough to give me nightmares at this late hour on the East coast…
Bullpen win, bullpen win, bullpen win. And Stormy deserves it, big time.
Amen. Stormy for MVP (of the game…?)
The Reds still have to score and hold the Dodgers here.
Deno is leading off
Denorfia up, Stormy out
Reds still have Larue on the bench…but I think I’d rather see Arroyo bat before Larue ever hits…
No hits for Jason Larue in 6 weeks…inexcusable for a 5+ million dollar catcher
Deno grounds out to SS. Castro up.
Castro singles. Freel up.
Castro singles to right
Wild pitch and Castro to 2nd w/ 1 out!
Come on, Farney!
Passed ball – which means an inning ending double play will be trickier for the Dodgers to pull off this time…
great play by Furcal at SS. 2 outs.
The savior benefits from some divine intervention.
We need a timely hit!
Dunn looking for his FIFTH hit tonight…
I cannot believe Marty just said back-to-back lefties, Griffey on deck. I hope we don’t get burned by batting out of order. Wouldn’t that be the last straw.
Dunn pops out to 2nd. How long can our bullpen hold up?
uuuugggghh. This team is more than frustrating (again) tonight…
Need another 2 innings of shutout ball from the bullpen still…
Deno stays in LF for Dunn. Scheonweis pitching.
Groundout to RA. He has looked good defensively at 1B tonight/this morning.
Wow, it is seriously late Eastern time, bet no one wants to be reminded. It’s getting pretty late Pacific time.
Furcal is up for the 16th time tonight.
1:39 AM and counting. . .another late night-here’s hoping the Reds make staying up worthwhile this time
When did Denorfia rejoin the reds?
I’m willing to stay up until 3 if that’s what it takes for the Reds to pull this one out.
He got called up today.
Schoeneweis gives up the 2-out walk. Nomar is up.
Walk to Mr. 0-5 Lugo… Garciaparra up, 2 down.
C’mon. Give us a chance at a 12th inning.
Argh, full count to Nomar…Drew up next
Nomar grounds out to EE and goes 0-6. On to the 12th innning and 2AM.
Ground out to third…onto the 12th boys.
I think EE or Jr. is due for a HR here in the 12th.
EdE, Griffy, Aurilia. Does this get us a run?
I think the Reds radio must have some of THE MOST annoying ads ever… The whole Tarzan, Elephant one especially is aired WAYYYYY too often.
The Reds can’t afford to waste this performance by the bullpen: 6 IP, 1ER
Wow. 2 am is pretty hardcore for you east coast/ohioans. Nice work. Let’s see you all rewarded with a Reds win.
EE flies out to LF and joins Nomar in the 0-6 club.
Elmer Dessens on the mound, by the way.
Griffey lines out to CF. Taveras ended his hit streak today.
c’mon richie….
Drew, Kent, Ethier due up for LA…
Jr. flies out as a type this..Aurilia up, 2 down.
single by RA can Ross do it again?
Aurilia singles up the middle, Ross up
Reds have 16 hits now, and only 5 runs…
16 hits for the reds. Wow. If only they’d happen with RISP a bit more often.
Ross hitting with 2 outs and Aurilia at 1st.
Ross doing his best impression of Phillips last night. 2 quick strikes.
Wild pitch, RA to 2nd. 2-2 count on Ross.
Wild pitch…runner in scoring position now, 2 down, 2-2 count on Ross.
Need a base hit here!
Is that Ross’s 3rd pop out to the catcher tonight?
WP puts RA at 2nd (RISP). A base hit here gives them the lead
Foul. Pop. Out.
2:00 AM makes me ornery.
3AM is becoming a distinct possibility.
How long can Schoeneweis keep his 0.00 ERA w/ the Reds? Hopefully for at least another inning.
Leadoff walk, Kent up.
Leadoff walk…Guess he didn’t get the memo you aren’t supposed to walk the lead-off batter…
Base hit for Kent. 1st and 2nd w/ no outs. How are we gonna get out of this one?
1st and 2nd, no outs for the Dodgers…
shouldn’t the reds have called up EZ for exactly this situation?
No bunt?
Nice play by Freel. I didn’t think he would get there. I guess they should’ve bunted there.
MArty can’t be calling it like that at this hour…
No bunt? That’s what I was wondering also.
Schoeneweis out, Coffey in. We need a ground ball.
Need the pitchers best friend here…
Agree on the Marty call, I was expecting a throw home from the way he said it.
CeeKeR-Missed marty’s call. Good or bad?
Marty made it sound like it was crushed, a surefire hit, and most likely the game winner… Instead Freel “caught it easily”…as Marty said later.
Ross out, Valentin in too
Reds remaining bench players: Hollandsworthless and Larue…
Arroyo, grab a bat man, we need ya
Pop out to Phillips. 2 on, 2 out.
One more, baby.
That was one nice thing about having Jimmy Haynes around – you could always pinch with him.
Lucky 13 baby!
Groundout to EE. On to the 13th. Phillips leads off. Maybe he can make up for his lack of late inning heroics the past 2 nights.
To the 13th! Coffey does his job
Amazing. Fantastic work so far by the Relief Corps (save Belisle).
Lets get the win here and now!
Tarzan ad again… *bangs head on desk*
This is getting late, even out here on the west coast. I don’t wanna watch baseball any more.
Stick with it! We are sucking it up here in the east.
I have to be on the train to LA at 7:00 AM.
great play by Lugo there to get BP
re: Chris. I’d rather be watching it than listening to it / watching gamecast…beginning to get painful. (glad I don’t have to work Wednesday too)!
Haha
Vin Scully is telling the same stories he told in the 4th inning. He has 50 times more info than anyone I’ve ever heard (Cormier was a high school badminton champ), but even he’s running out.
My radio feed just went dead…so now it’s reallllllly quiet here
ha. it appears Cormier missed his true calling (badminton)
Reds get a runner w/ 2 down after an error. Come on Farney
Tomorrow better be quicker – the last train home is at 10:10 PM.
Good news is that Maddux got drilled last time I saw him (in SD early in the year).
Farney is asleep. It’s up to Freel.
I just want to get Mighty Javy to the plate.
Well, gotta hope for the 14th inning now…
it appears Cormier missed his true calling (badminton)
Ha. I totally agree.
Groundout. Bottom of 13 here we come. (i think I am nearing 100 posts for tonight)
Due up for the Reds in the 14th:
Valentin 0-0
EE: 0-6
Jr: 1-6
…at least they are due
I’ve probably got about 25-30 posts….and I don’t think I joined until the 8th or 9th inning!
I hope we get to find out (if they’re due)
I didn’t join until about the 5th i think and I’m definitely around 100.
At least I know I’m not the only up at this hour listening to the Reds…
1 down in the 13th, need 2 more outs Coffey!
Coffey K’s Furcal. 2 down.
Coffey “blew away” Furcal. I don’t remember the last time a Reds pitcher “blew away” anyone on a strike out…esp. our relievers!
Brad Penney on deck
Dodgers are out of position player subs
2-2 count on Lugo
Lugo K’s. Let’s win it in the 14th!
Any chance we could trade Larue to the Dodgers RIGHT now for cash or a bat boy? (we’d even let Larue bat for them)…
As long as they take his salary.
On to the four-fricken-teenth. Lets get them bats-a-roarin’!
I think they’d rather have Penny bat instead (as would I)
Derek Lowe on the mound
Penney on deck, I missed that, that’s funny. Of course our best pinch hitter started the game (remember way back when?) so he’s not available.
Shame Dunn is out of the game…
Javy grounds out to Lugo
EdE seems to have been down 0-2 in every atbat tonight. He K’s and goes 0-7.
Encarnacion is completely “fouled up
at the plate” according to Marty… Maybe he needs a day off…
Ouch. EdE 0-7.
Ouch. Now we gotta hope for 15 innings!
Griffey: first pitch ground ball to the right side. how many times have we seen that this year? I guess we will have to hope for 15 innings.
Fouled up? I can see why they want to partner him with an analyst.
In comes Bill Braysky
Marty’s tired…been getting way too excited over trivial outs…keeps saying the wrong thing (ie, Dunn was batting, even though he’s been out of the game for awhile now…) Hard for Marty to stay awake now I think…He even apologized a couple innings ago
Hey. I just missed the 14th inning stretch.
Hope Bill Brayski gives us another chance to take the lead.
Hope we can avoid putting the lead off batter on this inning, the light-hitting Derek Lowe.
Let’s not walk Derek Lowe to start the inning, Brayski
Bray throws the pitch to the screen… Larue “catching” (not very well).
3-0 on the pitcher batting.
Braysky missed the memo.
A nice walk to the pitcher leading off the inning.
a walk to the pitcher… Hume to the mound to slap Bray around a bit
Hey, is it too late to take “the trade” back?
You are kidding me.
I think I should email the memo to the Reds bullpen before tomorrow’s game…maybe then they’ll stop walking the leadoff hitters… Esp. crappy pitchers!
Bray just has no idea where he is throwing it. That is dangerous when you are in the middle of the order. He is gonna groove one here pretty soon to the wrong batter.
Kent on deck … double play needed big time here!
Struck out Drew…don’t know how good of pitches they were…gamecast has them all on the righthand corner of the plate…
DP Gets us out of the inning, now. Ground ball, please.
5-4-3 DP. that was turned really slow. I thought they had no chance. Apparently Kent is too tired to run. On to the 15th!
Double play!! To the 15th!
Almost a free game of baseball for all in attendance !
Sweet … Bray won’t have to do the TPS reports tonight.
BooYa. No why can’t I get a Sac FLy when I ask for it?
Marty says let’s play all night. I say, lets end it here.
Brayski probably still has to pitch the bottom of the 15th…don’t get too excited.
Aurilia, Larue, Phillips
Hopefully Aurilia gets on and Larue can bunt him over…Phillips gets the go ahead RBI. (that’s the plan anyhow)
I like the way you think, CeeKeR.
Phillips will get his 3rd chance to redeem himself for his last 2 nights of nonclutch hitting.
Single for RA. Here we go, Reds.
Step 1, complete. Aurilia on.
LaRue pops up the bunt to 3rd. Freaking brilliant.
We can not play small ball to save our lives!
Woooooooooow. Larue POPS OUT on a bunt attempt.
I can’t express my disgust with his play this year. Feels like he took his big ‘ol contract and didn’t bother playing at all this year.
Let’s see if LaRue can execute.
Nope. DFA.
2 down now.
Post-game batting practice, nobody is going back to the hotel until they can get 100 consecutive bunts on the ground.
Phillips flies to LF. 2 out. It’s up to Deno. I don’t know if he even has the power to hit it in the gap and put the Reds ahead.
I agree, Jeff. Fun-Duh-mentals
Deno goes down looking. Let’s hope for 16?
I think Deno’s a Gap hitter. But Strikes out looking. Not looking good. Still gotta hold.
At this rate, they might have about 100 at bats during the actual game…
Now we gotta hope for 16 innings…
As I noted the other night: I am a lifelong Reds fan and no Reds team has ever pissed me off as much as this one. I have been more frustrated watching games this year than ever before.
With this lineup, the Reds could play 50 innings and not score again. They essentially have four legitimate hitters on the field now (Aurilia, Jr, Phillips, Freel). EE is fouled up, and then it’s Castro, LaRue, Deno, pitcher.
LaRue should quit. Seriously.
I am about to unleash a comment full of profanities if the Reds can’t find a way to pull this game out. It is 10 til 3am, I’m tired, I’m grumpy, and the Reds are blowing this game.
Since I started this thread, I get an email every time there’s a comment. At least I can bulk delete.
Exasperating.
Aww, what’s 329 emails (and counting?)
I wonder if I’m up to 150 posts yet
If nothing else, I’m really climbing up the “Top Commentors” list tonight, baby.
I think Julio Franco retired during this game.
haha, all of us our…but then again, ya need a little conversation to stay awake at this point. (3:00 AM here)…and to think I laughed when someone said it looked like 3 am was a possibility earlier tonight…
On to the 16th!
I wish larue would retire.
We can’t rule out 4am at this point.
I can safely rule out 4 AM.
I’m giving the Reds 1 more inning to score.
I would have fallen asleep right now if I wasn’t sitting at my computer and commenting every couple minutes.
haha.
What’s really frustrating is when the Reds get their 3rd out without scoring – you that it’s either going to be a loss, or they have to get 6 more Dodger outs to win.
On the bright side, the bullpen has had a great night.
I heard Homer Bailey is on a plane to LA. They’re going to activate him at 8:00 AM to finish this one out.
Castro-Freel-Bray to start the 16th.
Has Hollandsworth batted?
Seems like the batters (on both sides) gave up about 6 innings ago… Ground balls, pop outs, screwed up bunts… It’s been ugly from an offensive perspective.
No. He is the only guy left on the bench. But I’d take my chances w/ Brayski.
Hollandsworth(less) is the only bench player left on either team…and he’s up now
Hollandsworthless: first pitch groundout. Bray couldve done that.
Players left:
Harang
Arroyo
Lohse
????
(I count 21 players used, incl. H-Worth.)
Who’s pitching for Cincy?
OH – Franklin.
Ouch.
2 IP yesterday.
… or, two days ago, if you prefer.
Franklin has not pitched yet. Not sure who’s coming in now tho.
Marty’s already pissed at Franklin…and he hasn’t even thrown a pitch yet!
This is really it. I don’t think they could even put Harang in there if they wanted – there’s nobody to start tomorrow’s game. Maybe if Lohse didn’t throw on the side earlier today…
F
FRANKLIN. 1 pitch. Homerun.
I quit.
Good night all.
It couldn’t last forever.
That’s demoralizing. I think you can call tomorrow’s game a “must win.” I know it is early but the Reds are on a 5 game losing streak, have just lost the wild card lead, and have their ace going.
That douchebag throws one pitch – and a guy with 1 HR on the season creams it.
I’m so mad…i hope i can fall asleep.
it doesn’t pay to stay up and listen to this team, i can tell you that.
2 nights in a row.
Good night, Mrs. Calabash–wherever you are.
F this. 1-5 road trip so far. are the reds throwing in their resignation from the playoff race?
They’re doing everything they can to lose it, that’s for sure.
When a team takes a collective dump like this, you have to look at the manager, IMO.
A big early lead would calm my nerves a bit anyway… but that just isn’t in the Reds’ repertoire.
this team is not playoff material, and whoever wins the NL Wild Card aint quite playoff material either
I truly hope you are proved wrong before the end SchrockStar. Good night all.
1. I can’t believe I fell asleep all the way back in the sixth inning.
2. I’m really, really glad I fell asleep in the sixth inning.
Or…
