A very interesting lineup. Firstly, Griffey isn’t the #3 hitter. Secondly, Encarnacion is. Lastly, Dunn gets a day off in favor of the Reds’ only reserve outfielder, Todd Hollandsworth.
Just got back from Lookouts game. Homer Bailey 6 IP, 2 hits, 0 W, probably 9 or 10 K’s. Struck out last hitter 97 with man on third.
I think only went 3 balls on 2 hitters. Curve looked sharp. Fastball ranged 90 – 96.
This is best I’ve seen from Homer. I guess we’ll get official report from the GM (he was there). If Homer wanted to make it hard to not call him up, I think he’s done it.
Well, Michalak’s in the right ballpark to do that. . . but the Dodgers lead the league in batting average, and have actually scored more runs than the Reds have despite Chavez Ravine.
With Andre Ethier batting, Jeff Kent picked off and caught stealing 2nd base, pitcher Chris Michalak to first baseman Scott Hatteberg to shortstop Rich Aurilia to pitcher Chris Michalak to second baseman Brandon Phillips to shortstop Rich Aurilia.
2-out single followed by a HR. 2-0 Dodgers after 2 (thanks to Edwin for ending the inning). Also the 4th homer allowed by Michalak in fewer than 20 major-league innings.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team less prepared to take advantage of opportunities. I’ve had enough of this bunch. Narron, along with every one of his players save perhaps Griffey, is proving to be not ready for prime time.
1-9 RISP. I wonder what the record is for futility with RISP. 1-28 in the last 4 games. Unless we’re hitting home runs, this stinks. However, it looks like we’ll maintain our wild card lead with SD losing.
Attempted stolen base, Ross throws it into center field.
But sometimes you get lucky. Ryan Franklin, Narron’s favoritest relief pitcher ever, allows a ball hit hard enough to short to result in the easiest doubleplay you ever did see. 4-1 Dodgers after 5.
Gameday finally updated, … Jason Repko singles on a ground ball to left fielder Todd Hollandsworth. Russell Martin out at home, left fielder Todd Hollandsworth to third baseman Edwin Encarnacion to second baseman Brandon Phillips to first baseman Scott Hatteberg to catcher David Ross to third baseman Edwin Encarnacion. Jason Repko to 2nd on the throw.

Guess Super Dave doesn’t want to be Franklin’s personal catcher. Or maybe Super Dave (Osborne) IS the appropriate nickname for this particular performance.
Todd Coffey gets two outs , then walk – single – walk loads the bases. That’s 6 walks and three hits allowed so far in 2-2/3 innings by the Reds bullpen. Oh, and through some miracle, 0 runs. So far.
Ex-Red Brett Tomko is on to relieve ex-Red Elmer Dessens after the ex-Dodger Hollandsworth drives in a couple runs. Ex-Dodger Ross on deck. What’s up with this?
This suddenly looks like it could get crazy. Phillips HR to follow up the Hollandsworth hit, makes it 6-5. Ross takes a quick walk, and Adam Dunn is up as a pinch-hitter with one out.
Kenneth walks. It’s really unfortunate that there is no outfielder on the bench, because a pinch-runner might be nice right about now. Of course, that’s only the potential tying run.
My hopes weren’t to high going in, with the offense in a slump we run our #5 starter out there to face their #1. I was just glad to see the bats coming around in this one… just in time for a bit more favorable pitching matchups in the coming games. The timeliness of the hitting will come back around, it always does with this team (hot/cold/hot/cold). I have a feeling this skid ends tonight, yesterday was the breakout phase (at least 2 innings of it).

Look at Homer’s line tonight, with Krivsky in attendance:
6 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 8 K.
Homer Bailey, come on down!
Yikes. Quite a line for Homer. Why does he have to make it so difficult?
Geez, check out Lancaster’s latest post on Homer tonight. He’s right: the pressure on Krivsky to bring him up has to be mounting considerably.
Michalak would do a long way toward alleving that by doing a good job tonight.
Well, Michalak’s in the right ballpark to do that. . . but the Dodgers lead the league in batting average, and have actually scored more runs than the Reds have despite Chavez Ravine.
Michalak is topping out at 79 mph to this point? Oh, he just hit 80, and it was lined into center for the first basehit by either side.
If you’re scoring along with us:
With Andre Ethier batting, Jeff Kent picked off and caught stealing 2nd base, pitcher Chris Michalak to first baseman Scott Hatteberg to shortstop Rich Aurilia to pitcher Chris Michalak to second baseman Brandon Phillips to shortstop Rich Aurilia.
2-out single followed by a HR. 2-0 Dodgers after 2 (thanks to Edwin for ending the inning). Also the 4th homer allowed by Michalak in fewer than 20 major-league innings.
2-0. crap.
we need homer. and some hitting. the reds left their bats in cincy.
Nice – Michalak walks on a 3-2 pitch. Love to see a pitcher do something positive at the plate. Now the professional hitters need to pitch in.
Freel walks on a full-count as well. Penny racking up the pitchcount.
Now Penny’s all over the place. 4-pitch walk to Hatteberg to bring up young Edwin with ‘em loaded (1 out).
Now 0-4 w/RISP.
You gotta be kidding. Best RISP hitter grounds into a doubleplay. Did the Reds cross the path of a black cat or something last Friday morning?
Sad thing is that we haven’t scored since Saturday and it’s almost Tuesday.
Hopefully, a black cat is all that happened.
Michalak, keep us close!
Whew. First hit, Griffey double to the right-center gap. Let’s see Penny’s wildness continue unabated.
Wouldn’t mind that.
Can we get Griffey around?
1-5 RISP now but still haven’t scored a run yet and Mr. Whiff at the plate!
Go Rich! Pop-fly single. 1st and 3rd, nobody out. If they find a way to not score here, I will be too frustrated to go any farther.
Hollandsworth still gets to make an out, but the Reds score a run on the play anyway. It’s a win-win!
Now we need Ross to pick us up
C’mon David Ross! Big homecoming!
No DP’s please!
Crap!!!!
Doubleplay – but a very unusual one. 2-1 Dodgers now.
BTW, Padres are losing to Arizona 5-1 in the 6th.
Will someone PLEASE take away Narron’s ’steal home/squeeze’ button?
Consecutive ground-rule doubles give the run right back. 3-1 Dodgers.
Geez 4-1 no one retired and nobody in the bullpen. Marty is ripping into this team again!!
Make it 4-1, here in the 4th. Michalak is no Jamie Moyer.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team less prepared to take advantage of opportunities. I’ve had enough of this bunch. Narron, along with every one of his players save perhaps Griffey, is proving to be not ready for prime time.
Or maybe Michalak is the ‘Feiler Faster’ continuation of Chris Hammond.
Another short outing for Michalak. he’s either hit or miss. Can we score more than 1 run?
A Jason LaRue sighting – pinch-hitting for the pitcher after 4 innings.
And 0-28 for Larue now!
Did anyone realize that the Marlins have won 8 in a row, and at this moment sit 2.5 games behind the Reds?
Freel doubles. Let’s see some more of those. Seems like Hatteberg hasn’t done much at the plate in a while.
1-9 RISP. I wonder what the record is for futility with RISP. 1-28 in the last 4 games. Unless we’re hitting home runs, this stinks. However, it looks like we’ll maintain our wild card lead with SD losing.
this is sad.
When things are going wrong . . .
Penny throws 104 pitches over 5 innings and is relieved for the sixth by Joe Beimel, utility pitcher.
Another inning, another runner left in scoring position.
A fly ball single in front of second base??? Sounds like they were playing theme from Benny Hill, appropriate.
That call sums up the whole road trip so far!!
Ross having a game to forget. Passed ball.
Some ugly numbers for put outs 2-4-3-4-2-5. I have to admit I’ve never seen numbers like this in a scorebook.
Maybe they’ll do better while I’m sleeping.

Beat me.
Another pitch gets by Ross. Ugly.
Guess Super Dave doesn’t want to be Franklin’s personal catcher. Or maybe Super Dave (Osborne) IS the appropriate nickname for this particular performance.
Loaded for Lofton. Probably was trying to make perfect pitches on Furcal with a base open. Come on, Franklin.
Thank you Rich Aurilia. I think.
Ryan Franklin is giving up baserunners by the truckload. But Dodgers are still only up 4-1 after 6.
Glad to see the obligitory 1 run tonight. Missed it on Sunday.
Let’s make the other team regret missed opportunities just for fun.
Hey, Elmer Dessens! I like that guy, but I hope he gets shelled within an inch of a 5.00 ERA. Right now.
Clayton pinch-hits for Franklin. Thankfully.
This sucks.
Todd Coffey gets two outs , then walk – single – walk loads the bases. That’s 6 walks and three hits allowed so far in 2-2/3 innings by the Reds bullpen. Oh, and through some miracle, 0 runs. So far.
this is getting ugly. Coffey’s same old problems. 2 outs and can’t put’em away.
Griffey not enough speed to get that flyball. 6-1 Dodgers. Good night.
Awww – LA feels sorry for the Reds, lets Elmer have his first at-bat of the year.
depressing. 5 runs may as well be a million when the offense gives out.
Edwin leads off with a hit off the 3b. Can Griffey turn this game into a save situation? I feel so cynical.
OK, automatic double for Griffey. 2nd & 3rd with no outs. It would be tough not to score here – but we’ve seen them do it before.
See if Hollandsworth can ground into another run…
What? 2 RISP and they score? Too bad Coffey couldn’t close the door.
Aurilia swings at the first pitch and pops out, but ex-Dodger Hollandsworth drives in the save situation runs. 6-3 LA.
Canya believe it? HR. Reds down by 1.
Big Hit Todd and the Monsters.
Tomko Line: HR – walk – walk.
2 on, 1 out for Freel. Lets see if Farney has a little magic left for us tonight.
But first, a pitching change.
After getting down in the count, Dunn works a walk. Hitting in pitcher’s counts, Dunn has been awful this year. Nice job there.
Good ol’ Grady comes in with the early hook. He didn’t even wait for Pedro Tomko to give up the lead himself. Freel due up. Still one out.
Who is Jonathan Broxton, and why can I still not escape the feeling that we’re being toyed with?
Broxton apparently a flamethrower to the tune of 98 mph.
Not quite a doubleplay. Runners on the corners with two out for Hatteberg. He’s not been much of a contributor lately . . .
Now would be a great time for Hatte to start hitting again.
The trend continues. Hatte strikes out with runners at 2nd and third. Who’s coming on to try and keep it a 1-run game?
Remains 6-5, middle of the eighth.
Good thing Franklin’s already been used, otherwise Narron would have probably brought him in here. Furcal (S), Lofton (L), Lugo (R) due up.
Schoenewies, Schoenewies, Schoenewies. . .
Not exactly a defensive switch – Javy for Hatte. Not sure what it buys us in the batting order either.
Weathers on to face Nomar after a two-out single.
Double switch to move pitcher back two spots in line up, is that worth it? Why not just wait and have Valentine available to pinch hit?
LLM gets to celebrate his contract extension. I hope he makes it a big deal.
Ross throws out Lugo to get out of the inning without worrying about Nomar at all. Last shot – don’t go quietly.
Dodgers currently have a sort of bullpen-by-committee, as it were. Who’s coming in?
Ross nails a would be base stealer! A sign that things are turning in the Red’s favor?
Reds need one to tie in the ninth. EdE, Griffey, Arilia.
That’s at least a run. Lets go boys!
Super Dave was afraid Valentin might be replacing him, got psyched up and nailed the runner.
Broxton stays on.
Griffey looking for his third hit of the game … and his first home run.
So, considering he’s due up fourth in this inning, why not leave Dunn in for Hatteberg?
Kenneth walks. It’s really unfortunate that there is no outfielder on the bench, because a pinch-runner might be nice right about now. Of course, that’s only the potential tying run.
Erm, Hollandsworth.
Rich needs to stop swinging at the first damn pitch. Especially following a 5-pitch walk to the guy in front of him.
2 on for Phillips… Could the Reds finally go ahead?!
…2 down in the 9th too, but we’ll ignore that fact
Broxton down to 93mph from 98 last inning? That’s fast.
Hollandsworth, 2-out single up the middle to bring up Phillips.
Up to phillips – again. I’d settle for a game-tying single.
Ouch. 3-pitch K (all called strikes), and that’s that.
3 pitches, never swung. Game over, with tying run on 2nd, go ahead run on first.
Did they give up?
at least the bats showed signs of coming around, but man, 3 straight pitches to end the game. That hurts.
I’m starting to feel like a RedSox fan…
We gotta salvage something on this trip.
I quit watching after that idiotic rundown.
My hopes weren’t to high going in, with the offense in a slump we run our #5 starter out there to face their #1. I was just glad to see the bats coming around in this one… just in time for a bit more favorable pitching matchups in the coming games.
