Reds try to achieve the split today…big game.

According to Marc Lancaster, today’s lineup:

  • Obviously I would rather see Rich in the lineup, especially since he is back home, so to speak. But I could live with this one. For the life of me though, I do not understand why you ever would start Clayton over Castro for defensive or even offensive purposes. What in the world does Royce bring that Juan doesn’t?

Starting this game out with a quick 123… The Reds started the year pretty shabby vs rookie pitchers but since the half way point have had success vs the rrolies they have faced… but this rookie, due to his stats, gives us something to worry about.

    As I am typing…

Lohse gives up a single and Freel misplays it!
Please tell me they want to atleast split this series!

Bonds almost got ahold of that 1

I’ll tell you why Rich Aurillia riding the bench this game, he has San Fran jitters, only one hit in the series!

Really Juan Castro is a better bat but Clayton is supposed to provide D

Where is everybody?? Church.. Already been myself, and I should’ve had the Reds added to the prayer list.. they need it… Our aces pitched well and they just didn’t get any run support!

37days 02hrs 30min To get things together. During that time we need to stay over .500 ball and get things clicking consistently.

We have not looked our best these last 22 innings

Reds 0-18 with RISP over the last three days, including 0-3 today so far.

On the slightly more positive side, 75 pitches for the SF starter through 4 innings. So their bullpen should be exposed sooner than the last two games, and hitting off the SF bullpen worked out well in the first game.

1-2-3 inning there for Lohse. That’s better. He’s got 71 pitches through 4.

i’ve gotten used to the reds pitching being spotty at best, but i absolutely can’t stand these periods where our offense falls apart. someone go get some hits!

    Ditto that.

90 pitches for Cain through 5. But still no runs allowed, 4-0 SF.

Freel is extra-hyper out there in RF.

    Another run allowed. 5-0 now.

105 pitches through 6 for Cain. Maybe the Reds can hang about 10 runs on their bullpen now.

6-0. Belisle cannot hold things where they are. Giants have scored in every inning except the fourth so far – death by papercuts.

  • Reds just gave up…and by the lack of activity on this board, their fans have too

I guess there’s always the next series…why do these trips out west always have to be disastrous?

Cain throws 124 pitches, and he was still throwing at 110%. Easy way to shred the arm of your 21-year-old.

But the Reds cannot score. 6-0 at the 7th inning stretch.

Freel singles to lead off the eighth. Need 6 to get even, 7 for the lead.

Griffey singles too. Edwin comes up with a runner in scoring position, a sure failure situation for the past three days. Ol’ Felipe Alou not messing around – rearranges the deck chairs on the Titanic and brings in Correia.

Overenthusiastic swings for the fences, result is three infield pop-ups and 0 runs.

So how do the matchups look for LA?

^The Giants announcers still think SF has a chance, saying they’ve totally reversed their season. That’s adorable.

Good opposing pitching is killing this club.

  • It also seems like we make too many third and fourth starters look like Nolan Ryan. It appears to me that it is so psychological with this club. Either they have the mindset that they cannot be beat, or they seem beaten and lackadasical from the first pitch. I could be wrong, but I can almost predict the outcome of the game around the third inning (through the lineup at least once)by the intensity and concentration I see.

I am one of those who couldn’t bring myself to post my woes over this past series. I still think they will go 5-5 for the road trip and here’s to turning things around versus LA! They swept us in our house… returning the favor only seems appropriate.

One quick comment on this past series vs. the Giants… something everyone already knows but I need to vent… the 0-18 with RISP over the last three games is pathetic. Most of it is because they were drawing the majority of their walks and hits with 2 outs (is it me or does it seem like they’ve done that more than average this year? a lot of the times they have converted those 2-out baserunners for runs, obviously not here)

The whole series: It was either A. go down 1-2-3, B. get leadoff single/double and then fail to get him past second, or C. get 2 outs quickly followed by a hit or walk or two but nothing to show for them.

Oh, and Dunn should have had that 2-run bloop single yesterday… absolutely no hustle there, did he expect Clayton to get to it???

ugghh… it is so frustrating that they couldn’t pull away in San Fran and keep up with the Cards. I still think it will be easier to win the division thna the wild card but they need to seriously step it up over the last 6 games of this road trip (gotta win at least 4 of them)

jerry narron needs to hire someone to interpret espn’s stat page for him already. here’s what i came up with in about 10 minutes.

understanding that grif isn’t moving in the batting order, and recognizing that EdE has been the best cleanup htter on the team, here are the reds’ season OPSs in each slot in the order for the lineup we used yesterday and a proposed lineup:

    yesterday proposed
    1. freel 787, 1. phil 1047
    2. hatte 695, 2. dunn 1061
    5. dunn 826, 5. hatt 824
    6. ross 250, 6. rich 1007
    7. phil 745, 7. ross 1267
    8. royce 615, 8. freel 889

the proposed lineup gives an overall boost of 2177 to the team OPS, which converts to about 240 runs on the year.

standard use of the pythagorean approximation says that adding 10 runs is roughly equivalent to adding one win. So say that the OPS gain is only a quarter of what the season numbers indicate it would be, just to be super conservative about the whole thing.

That still means we’re giving away 6 wins on the season with the first lineup compared to the second. as far as i can tell, we could really use some of those right now.

Interesting al… good looking lineup too. I would say you would have to be conservative with those figures seeing as to how some of those players haven’t been fit into those holes regularly and they are bound to hit peaks and troughs wherever they are in the lineup. But I could see how that could make a 5-10 win difference (which is huge and could definitely help right now). If only Narron would go with that lineup for a week, or yesterdays (minus royce) just to see how they settle and then make fine tune adjustments. There certainly hasn’t been any period for the players to settle into a slot. I don’t know what method he could have to his mad lineup shuffling.
